DETOUR PROVES FASTER
If you have your choice between making a detour or attempting to pass the open half of a road under repair or reconstruction, the highway engineer and the National Authomobile Club unite in counseling you to make the former your choice.
It is the faster route, they say, in almost every case. It is particularly so when the road under repair is carrying a considerable volume of local traffic, which never is in such a hurry as that bound for distant places.

Tot Presents Abound This Year
For the parents of the nursery set there should be little trouble in selecting gifts for their children this Christmas.
Plastic playthings make a big splash onto the Yuletide market, and this should bring cheers from parents. There are many benefits to be derived from the plastic toys—they will withstand a great deal of abuse, they are tasteless, they are sanitary, and they are easily cleaned.
Most of the toys are designed in accordance with the recipient's age. As an example, a six-month old may be given an adjustable corduroy bootee with a cinsnit dog attached so that a child may play with the dog as it does with its toes.
Advancing to those eight months old, there is a crib attachment with a ring pull that makes a plastic clown cut caper. There are other toys that may be adjusted as the child grows. One is a rattle that may later be converted into a push-pull toy.
Others, such as a small lawn mower, will help those children just learning to walk. And there are rubber animals for the play yard group that may be easily cleaned with a damp cloth.
Whatever it is, however, it is almost certain to be colorful and to bring cheer to Christmas for the young.

Make a Big Hit With Yule Flowers
Inexpensive or priced way, either way, Christmas flowers will be as lovely and sentimental as a gift as it is possible to give. And don't ever kid yourself about the way a woman feels as flowers. There is nothing short of a mink coat, that she will prefer.
Tradition points out the seaside best-loved flowers. Roses; callies; poinsettas; chrysanthemums; azaleas; and gardenias usher in the California Yule season. Knick knacks such as gilded or plain pine cones, berries, hemlock, pine, laurel spruce, evergreen or acorns all sure bets to liven up a room and add a festive note to the casion.
Festooning the interior of your home with the Christmas spirit can be accomplished by looping hemlock, ground pine or laurel about the rooms and draperies gracefully above the hanging stockings on your mantlepiece.
Above all, don't forget mistletoe. Hang it above doorways and overhanging objects as pleasing surprise to unsuspecting visitors. Tradition has established the rule for the weicoming wreath on the door and who are we forget such a cheery precede.
For your festive holiday talk plan a gay centerpiece of even greens, acorns and red berries around gay red candles. They are just a few suggestions for holiday decorating.

VIENNA (AP)—Sovietized Eastern Europe loses no opportunity to make communist propaganda in the West—even in its trade agreements. Hundreds of thousands of pieces of coal, just delivered to Austria from Poland, bear the imprint of the hammer and sickle. A Vienna newspaper commented:
"The communist coal faces the same fate as communist newspapers, brochures and leaflets... they will go into the oven."

It has been that way since the day she got tired of drifting through the week wondering at the last minute what to have for dinner. Her budget had been straining at the seams even though her family had begun to complain "What — hamburger again?"
Mabel sat down with pencil and paper that day and did some figuring. She found that her biggest expenditure through the week was for food. Her almost daily trips to the store were consuming a great deal of time and gasoline. Her family obviously

all that its been a troubled here were many signs of it's traditional abundance.
Mabel sat down with pencil and paper that day and did some figuring. She found that her biggest expenditure through the week was for food. Her almost daily trips to the store were consuming a great deal of time and gasoline. Her family obviously was not entirely satisfied with the meals she prepared even though she often spent more for food than she could afford.
When she puts her mind to it, Mabel is one wise gal. Something had to be done and this is what Mabel did:
Since she had plenty of storage and refrigerator space, she decided to go shopping just once a week. She discovered that the food markets in Anaheim hold special sales at the end of every week. These are usually advertised in the paper on Thursday night for the benefit of week-end shoppers. Mabel decided to plan her menus around these weekly specials and make her trip to the market early Friday morning when merchandise is fresh and plentiful.
In a fraction of the time those daily trips to the store used to take, Mabel now plans a whole week's menus in advance. To make sure that she is properly protecting her family's health, she plans her menus with a chart of the basic seven foods before her.
The Basic Seven
1. Leafy green and yellow vegetables. One or more servings daily.
5. Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dried beans. Meat, poultry or fish: one serving daily. Eggs: minimum of four per person per week. Dried beans, peas: two or more servings a week.
6. Bread, flour and cereals every day. Whole grain preferred.
7. Butter or fortified margarine, other fats and oils. Some every day.
Naturally Mabel keeps in mind the likes and dislikes of her family because she thinks that meals ought to be enjoyable as well as nutritious. She is always on the lookout for new ideas and new ways with food. Variety is still the spice of life and a diet that includes a variety of different foods is usually a healthful one.
After Mabel has checked her refrigerator and cupboards for food on hand, she makes out her marketing list. Being a woman, she allows a little leeway for changing her mind. No use buying beans if the cauliflower looks fresher. Or if a pork roast appears particularly lean, it may easily be substituted for beef.
With her market list firmly in hand, Mabel is ready to make her purchases. She has found food buying to be an art in itself, and each week by carefully reading labels and talking with the clerks in the reputable market of her choice, she learns something she did not know before.

Fair Improvements Exempted from Building Curbs
At a meeting Monday night, R. M. C. Fullenwider, manager of the Orange county fair, told the directors of the 32nd District Agricultural board that exhibits buildings and livestock facilities for fairgrounds are exempt from building restrictions under the new National Production Authority.
Fullenwider said the news was telegraphed to the State Division of Architecture on the last day of the Western Fairs Annual meeting at Fresno from which he has just returned.
The district will proceed with remodeling of the exhibits building for which $55,000 was recently allocated by the state. The district plans to provide additional live stock facilities, initiate a landscaping program and additional comfort facilities for visitors.
Entry fees and premium awards will follow very closely the pattern established in the 1950 program.
State C of C to Aid Farm Effort
With California agriculture again facing the challenge of federal request for maximum production in the face of prospective labor shortage and curtailment in needed supplies, the California State Chamber of Commerce has announced it will sponsor emergency farm legislation at the 1951 legislature as a defense measure.
Specifically the State Chamber will seek to have the State Board of Agriculture designated to render farmers the all-out assistance and cooperation given during World War II by the war-born California Farm Production Council.
The State Chamber plan would delegate to the State Board of Agriculture the responsibilities and duties successfully assumed by the emergency California Farm Production Council, which operated from 1943 to 1947. Three members of the original Farm Production Council now are members of the State Board of Agriculture.
Entry fees in junior departments will be charged only where entry fees are charged in corresponding senior departments.
