Santa Ana Favored to Tackle Hornets in Thanksgiving Toss
First they send New Mexico out to play Army, then they put North Dakota up against Kentucky, and tomorrow they're going to throw Fullerton beneath the wheels of the Santa Ana grid machine.
The comparison isn't exactly valid—no one is expecting a slaughter at the hands of the Dons. Still, it is almost impossible to find anyone—even in Fullerton—who is willing to back the Hornets in the Turkey day fray without a considerable outlay of points.
Reasons for the caution are obvious. While the Dons, defending champions in the Eastern conference have swept through five league foes without too much trouble, Fullerton has been able to rock up only a 1-3-1 record against the same teams. The Hornets who finished in a tie for sixth last year, are in that spot again and figure to end there unless they win tomorrow.
The season's records of the two teams show a strange contrast.
Santa Ana started rather slowly, beating El Toro, losing to Long Beach, tying Pasadena, and losing to the SC freshmen. But then came the conference schedule and the Dons rolled to five straight wins.
Fullerton, on the other hand, started out in fiery fashion. They whomped Muir and then obliterated Vallejo, and all Fullertonians were ready to start planning a

Long Beach, however, whacked that plan with a 33-2 win. The Hornets then topped Santa Monica and tied Orange Coast before dropping successive decisions to Chaffey, Mt. Sac, and Riverside. Then, at last came the first league win over San Bernardino last Friday.

is hard to see why Santa Ana should rule such a prohibitive favorite. Its scoring punch lies in the throwing of quarterback Ray Willsey and the running of half-back George Brancato.
Perhaps Fullerton just has no one who can match this pair. Willsey has shown great versatility this year, passing, directing the team, and running well on occasion. Of Brancato, perhaps its write to say that he is a scoring

Story time in the old column—
today's tale is about Jim Tatum,
whose Maryland team will probably play Texas A. & M. in the President's Cup game on Dec. 9.
When Tatum was a gridder in college, he came up against a particularly tough opponent one day who was roughing him up on every day. Finally he could stand it no longer, so he asked his teammates what to do.
"Irk him a little and we'll call it official's attention to it and at a 15-yard penalty," suggested the quarterback.
So Tatum suffered along a bit longer until the situation was right.
"Now really give it to him," the 3 suggested.
Tatum uncorked some choice inactive the next time he faced his anniversary across the line. He was just coining a new epithet when the ball was snapped and the lights went out.
When he was revived, Tatum managed a smile.
"Did we catch him, fellows," he asked.
"Gee, I'm sorry, Jim," the quarterback told him, "but we just happened to score on that play and we had to refuse the penalty."

Bay Area Autos to Swell Stock Car Race Entries
Many new entries, particularly from the Bay area, are expected to compete in the 100-mile stock car classic at Santa Ana Blimp base this Sunday afternoon. This marathon was originally scheduled for last Sunday, but the weekend deluge made cancellation necessary.
Despite the expected influx of out-of-town drivers, Jim Rigby in a Hudson Hornet, Chuck Meekin in a 1951 Kaiser, Fred Steinbrener in a 1949 Lincoln and Eric Erickson in his 1948 Pontiac are still favorites.
Proceeding the 100-mile main event which starts at 2 p.m., qualifying begins at noon to be followed by three heat races, a trophy dash and a special event by the Victor McLaughlin Motorcycle corps.
The new flat asphalt mile-and-a-tenth course is in full view of the newly erected grandstands and is wide enough to permit as many as six cars to negotiate the turns abreast.
Tickets may be purchased at Neals Sporting Goods store in Santa Ana.
