For Results and Quick 7 Anaheim Gazette MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1950 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Forum Presents Cycling Photog This Evening Stan Midgley, "the Cycling Cinematographer," returns to Anaheim Monday evening to present a forum program of colored films in the school auditorium. "Riding High in the San Juan Wonderland" is the topic of Midgley's films. The colored films and accompanying narrative follow a trip by bicycle and afoot through Colorado's "off-the-beaten-track" San Juan mountains. Its decaying ghost towns and wheezing old narrow-guage trains, relics of a past century, join with colorful, unspoiled scenic beauty to make an outstanding film. The movie begins with a brief review of some of the famous places of Colorado, including Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Rocky Mountain National Park, Glenwood Canyon, the Maroon Lakes, Aspen, the Mount of the Holy Cross, the Grank Mesa, the Black Canyon, the Great Sand Dunes and finally the last narrow-gauge State C of C Talks Highways Highway conditions in all parts of California will be analyzed Thursday, November 30, at the highway section of the California State Chamber of Commerce's annual statewide meeting in San Francisco. Impact of national defense controls upon highway construction, and current road financing problems will be among those considered by speakers and panels representing state, county and city government, legislators, auto associations and traffic experts. The critical off-street parking problem facing most California urban areas will be discussed by Richard Graves, executive director of the League of California Cities. "Are Our Highways Going to Pot?" is a question receiving national publicity. The status of California thoroughfares in this regard will be assessed by a panel including: George T. McCoy, State highway engineer; Clifford E. Peterson, commissioner, California Highway Patrol; Edwin S. Moore, public relations manager, California Roast turkey commands the center of the stage on Thanksgiving Day and family tradition usually dictates whether his accompaniments be simple or sophisticated. Whatever the pattern at your house, individual touches of your own lend zest to your holiday table. A little imagination helps to make Thanksgiving dinner a truly festive affair. The following menu suggests ways in which commonplace foods may be dressed up for the occasion. Thanksgiving Dinner Broiled grapefruit Roast turkey with walnut-bread stuffing, giblet gravy Whipped potatoes Marmalade sweet potatoes Tiny onions creamed with peas Cranberry sauce in orange cups Assorted relishes past century, join with colorful, unspoiled scenic beauty to make an outstanding film. The movie begins with a brief review of some of the famous places of Colorado, including Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Rocky Mountain National Park, Glenwood Canyon, the Maroon Lakes, Aspen, the Mount of the Holy Cross, the Frank Mesa, the Black Canyon, the Great Sand Dunes and finally the last narrow-gauge railroad of its kind, between Alamosa and Durango. The bicycle trip begins northward up the Animas valley, climbing 10,901 feet, and thence to Silverton. There is a two mile ride up a cable in an ore oucket to a mine over 11,000 feet high, a trip over the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray, a ride on the "Galloping Goose" railroad (a seven-passenger Pierce-Arrow automobile on tracks) across a startling beautiful countryside, then the ghost towns of Ophir, Trout Lake and Lizard Head pass, and finally a narrow gauge rail trip through Animas canyon, "the most spectacular trip in America." Friends Plan Aid to Korea Americans who want to do something personally to help war victims in Korea may now send urgently needed clothing through the American Friends Service Committee, the Quaker organization which administered overseas relief programs after both World Wars. Clothing gifts may be taken or sent to the Quaker regional warehouse at 501 N. Raymond ave., Pasadena. Women's clubs, service organizations, schools or church groups interested in collecting clothing to go to Korea are invited to obtain further details or to ask for staff assistance on any phase of the proposed program from Fred Schug, material aids secretary, at the above address, or by telephone at Sycamore 6-8159. Bowl Lineup NEW YORK (P)—Here is the list of bowl teams definitely selected for post-season games: November 23 Burley Bowl, Johnson City, Richard Graves, executive director of the League of California Cities. "Are Our Highways Going to Pot?" is a question receiving national publicity. The status of California thoroughfares in this regard will be assessed by a panel including: George T. McCoy, State highway engineer; Clifford E. Peterson, commissioner, California Highway Patrol; Edwin S. Moore, public relations manager, California State Automobile Assn., and Wade Sherrard, Los Angeles, general manager, California Motor Transport Assn. Inc. New Storms Continued from Page 1 Most of the fire department's pumpers were busy at the time, trying to keep flood waters from ruining goods in store basements. Two other deaths had been reported earlier, directly attributable to the floods, possibly the worst in the history of Central California. The Weather Bureau announced: "Although there may be temporary breaks in the storm, no permanent clearing is seen at the present time." From the American river to the north, southward to the Kern, which sweeps into Bakersfield, streams heading from the mountains were rioting under the pressure of great rains and unseasonable warm weather which was heating the Sierra Nevada snow pack into sheets of cascading water. At Sacramento rivermen predicted the American river would go a foot above its overflow level late today—about four feet lower than the record mark. Seven hundred residents of suburban Sacramento were forced from their homes. Things looked better today at Bakersfield, to the south. The Kern river rose last night to within seven inches of the level of the Oildale-Bakersfield bridge, but today it had fallen four feet. Three bridges in the area were washed out. The Kern river flooded oilfields in the Rosedale area, some of them 1½ miles from the river bed. Disaster relief officials in Bakersfield said they believed the worst was over. Some families Wind Machine Cost Calculated The average cost of operation and depreciation of wind machines used for frost protection in 21 Orange county orchards during the 1948-1949 season was $7.94 per machine hour. Harold E. Wahlberg, county director of the University of California Agricultural Extension Service, reported this in an analysis of cost records on 33 dual-propelleried gasoline machines. Overall costs included fuel, oil, labor, repairs and depreciation. The average operating cost was $4.89 per machine hour, with the individual machine costs ranging from $2.93 to $14.91 per hour. Cause of the wide range was the variation in the number of hours run by different machines. The average depreciation charge was $3.05 per machine hour, and the range varied from $1.33 per hour for a machine that was operated 270 hours, to $8 per hour for one operated only 60 hours. Average effective coverage of each machine was estimated at 15. Shriners Slate Potentate Fete To highlight the visitation of Imperial Potentate Hubert M. Poetat of the Shrine of North America, an imperial potentate's ceremonial is being arranged by Illustrious Potentate Virgil "Fuzzy" Frizzell of At Malaikah Temple, Los Angeles. It is scheduled for Saturday, January 6, in Shrine auditorium, and is being staged at the request of the chief of all fez-wearers in America, made immediately following the Harold Lloyd Rose Bowl Ceremonial last summer. Potentate Poetat, who hails from Sudan Temple, Wake Forest, N.C. was elected to supreme command of the Shriners at the 1950 Imperial Council Session in Los Angeles. Ceremonial Director Joseph Wade Brigance has been told by "Fuzzy" Frizzell "the sky's the limit," so far as this super-spectacle is concerned. It will be a pageant of oriental splendor. The shortest international streetcar line in the world runs from El Paso, Texas, to Juarez, Mexico. Quick Action Always Use Good Home-Makers' Forum By JOAN B. Just before serving, cut each cup in half and arrange around the meat platter. Mince-Pumpkin Pie Some families prefer pumpkin pie while others like mince. If your family is divided on this important point, a compromise is in order. Pour one and a half cups of cooked mincemeat into the bottom of a 10-inch unbaked pie shell.
