BEYERLINES by Ernie Beyer During the course of his career, a sportswriter is invited out to a number of events such as banquets, dinners, meetings, and other vari-nomenclature free feeds. Naturally, he joyously pounces upon each of these invitations, principally because of the relief that it brings to the tattered wallet that his chosen profession has earned him. Of course, everyone can't attend all of these meetings, so it therefore becomes the duty of the sports-writer to pass along to his readers the catalog of events that transpires at the gatherings. Well, I got my first invitation this week, and although it turned out to be an invitation out of a place rather than an invitation out to a place, I hereby discharge my duty to both of my readers. It started sometime in the middle of last week when I was invited to come over to last night's meeting of the Fullerton Quarterback club. Braven Dyer, Trojan correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, was to be the guest speaker or guest of honor or whatever they chose to designate him. So I pattered Fullertonward Rain Washes Away Practice As Gridders Eye Orange Next The secret is out—it rained yesterday—and with millions of droplets went football practice merrily down the drain. Clayes field at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon looked like Lake Tahoe in miniature, so unless there's plenty of sunlight today to dry it out, it's unlikely that it will be usable. So this is as good a time as any to tie together the odds and ends, look over some stuff that has been missed in the past and cast a glom into the future. All On Road First of all, if you haven't seen the Colonists play at home yet this year, you're not going to. Friday night's game with Santa Ana Gopher Backers Start Lining Up Bierman Successor MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—The line of candidates to succeed Bernie Bierman as head football coach at the University of Minnesota was forming today, but officially there was nobody in it. Word of Bierman's request to be relieved of his duties at the end of the year hardly had spread when admirers of various gridiron geniuses got to work nominating their man for the post. But Athletic Director Ike Armstrong stuck to his statement of yesterday that he "wouldn't even discuss a successor until the season is over." He really meant it, too. Wilkinson Suggested was the home finale. Frida game with Orange and Thanksgiving day contest w Santa Barbara are both games. The 36-0 smothering of San Ana was the worst beating Saints have taken since they joined the Sunset league. It was biggest score of the year for Aheim, and naturally, the largest under Head Coach Clare v Hoorebeke. Happy With One Fullerton Coach Dick Spaulding scouted the Saint-Colonist game Friday night and said early in the game that he would be satisfied with a one-point win over Saints this week. After Anahe had run up a 24-0 lead, however he left. In view of Fullerton's 5 massacre of Huntington Beach Saturday, Spaulding would probably be the only person in Fullerton satisfied with a one-point victory this Saturday. Still On Top Apaheim's Bees are still in same spot that they were in prior to Friday—tied for first place the loop. The tie, however, now been reduced to two, ratchets It started sometime in the middle of last week when I was invited to come over to last night's meeting of the Fullerton Quarterback club. Braven Dyer, Trojan correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, was to be the guest speaker or guest of honor or whatever they chose to designate him. So I pattered Fullertonward through the raindrops last night and was greeted at the door by a smiling gentleman who quickly whisked my coat onto a hanger. A few bystanders nodded greetings to me and I fell into line behind them as they started filling into the dining room. Just as I reached the door, I was plucked on the sleeve by someone who asked, "What organization are you with?" "I'm from the Anaheim Gazette," was my snappy rejoinder, "and I was invited here by X." "Fine," he replied. "Follow me." So saying, he escorted me into the next room. And there I was at last—seated among the coats and hats of all of the great sports luminaries of Orange county. "Just wait," he said, darting into the dining room. So I just did. Being in the mood of the occasion, I pulled out a pencil and paper after about five minutes of waiting and started to doodle a football play. Another one joined it, and pretty soon I had a page full. I should add here that I had one of the best seats in the house. From my vantage point I could see waiters and waitresses courrying around every once in a while in the dining room, bringing in new dishes and taking out old ones. I feel perfectly safe in terming this one of the finest Word of Bierman's request to be relieved of his duties at the end of the year hardly had spread when admirers of various gridiron geniuses got to work nominating their man for the post. But Athletic Director Ike Armstrong stuck to his statement of yesterday that he "wouldn't even discuss a successor until the season is over." He really meant it too. Wilkinson Suggested Through it all, though, names of some coaches were repeated. One was Bud Wilkinson, popular and successful coach at Oklahoma university. At Oklahoma City, Wilkinson said he had not been approached and that he had no comment on what he might do if the job were offered him. Wilkinson, who played under Bierman in 1934 and 1935, was quoted by a close friend as saying previously, "if Bernie can't make it, no other coach can, either." The friend added he was convinced Wilkinson wouldn't take the post. Ward Also Named The same word came from Dallas Ward, former assistant to Bierman, now at Colorado university. He, too, hasn't been approached, he said. Another Minnesota alumnus, Clarence "Biggie" Munn, whose Michigan State team administered the sixth defeat to this year's Gophers only Saturday, also was another on the unofficial lists. Munn was freshman coach under Bierman in the latter's first year at Minnesota—1932. Paul Brown, coach of the Cleveland team of the National Professional Football League was suggested, along with Henry Frnka, mentor at Tulane. Prospects of Brown and Frnka, however, were considered slim. Nothing From Bible On the other side of the picture, came the "no comment;" reply of Dana X. Bible, athletic director at the University of Texas, when asked whether Bierman would be considered as head football coach at Texas. Head Coach Blair Cherry will retire at Texas after the season ends. Bierman-coached teams have won mythical titles five times and the championship of the Western conference six times. In the 18 years he has been at the school, Bierman's teams have won nobody in it. In view of Fullerton's massacre of Huntington Beach Saturday, Spauldinger would probably be the only person in Fullerton satisfied with a one-point win this Saturday. Still On Top Anaheim's Bees are still in the same spot that they were in prior Friday—tied for first place in the loop. The tie, however, has now been reduced to two, rather than three, teams. Huntington Beach was the helper, for which Anaheim and Santa Ana played a 6-6 tie, the Oilers wallop Fullerton 20-0. The Colonists seem to have the best chance to taunt the bunting. While the Saints mite with Fullerton, Anaheim go against cellar-dwelling Orange Orange, incidentally, is also the C cellar. Dick Glover's Anaheim Cees get their last chance to post a win this year when they play Orange on Thursday Anaheim has a tie with Huntington Beach in league play, where Orange is winless. It suddenly occurred to me that I now had more fotoball plays than the Chicago Bears. A rustle arose in the dining room. They were clearing away the dishes. Tactfully, I arose and donned my coat. As I passed the dining room, I smiled cheerfully to my host's. I couldn't help but feel that I had won the battle—I had shown them that no hint was too subtle for me. Rickey to Tell Meyer Future PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bram Rickey, new boss of the Pittsburg Pirates, expects to have a decision on Manager Billy Meyer's future by tomorrow. The announcement — awaited anxiously by Buc fans as well — will determine whether the Pirates keep Billy for the maining year of his contract or discard him now. If he's fired, Meyer will collect $40,000 from the Pirates for teaching up his three-year contract. Navy-Irish Series Will not Terminate ANNAPOLIS (AP)—Despite mors to the contrary, Navy and Notre Dame are going to continue to play each other in football athletic directors of both schools say. But there's some uncertainty to where the 1951 game will be held. Practice Change Next Yesterday—and with the practice merrily down the afternoon afternoon looked there’s plenty of sun that it will be usable. To tie together the odds the home finale. Friday’s with Orange and the giving day contest with Barbara are both road. 36-0 smothering of Santa was the worst beating the have taken since they join Sunset league. Guard Les Richter points out to Cal Coach Pappy Waldorfszewski nods agreement. The win not only practically put the Bears in the Rose Bowl on Jan., also boosted them two spots to fourth in the weekly AP poll. Ohio State, Oklahoma Pass Army in AP Football Poll NEW YORK (AP)—Ohio State tops the nation’s college football teams in the weekly Associated Press poll after a tight five-club battle. For the second week in succession the point system determined the winner with both Ohio State and Oklahoma Ohio State, Oklahoma Pass Army in AP Football Poll NEW YORK (AP)—Ohio State tops the nation's college football teams in the weekly Associated Press poll after a tight five-club battle. For the second week in succession the point system determined the winner with both Ohio State and Oklahoma squeezing past Army, last week's winner. Army received most first place votes, 72, but lost out in the point system tabulation of the 308 ballots from football writers and sportcasters. Ohio had 66 firsts and Oklahoma 63. According to the established scoring system, a first place vote counts 10 points. A second counts nine. And so on down to one point for a 10th place ballot. As a result Ohio finished with 2412 points, Oklahoma 2381 and Army 2272. No Prestige Lost Next came California and Kentucky. All the first five received at least 2000 points. It was the closest finish of the year. Apparently Ohio lost no prestige in its tight winning battle with Wisconsin, 19-14. The Buckeyes (6-1) face another test Saturday in eighth-rated Illinois (6-1). Oklahoma, too, had to struggle to keep its perfect record intact. Kansas led the Sooners into the last quarter before Oklahoma blasted out its 28th straight victory and seventh of the year, 33-13. They play Missouri this week. Cal Up Two Arny called its shots in a romp over New Mexico, 51-0, for its seventh straight. The Cadets get a chance to show their worth against a Pacific Coast conference eleven Saturday when they visit the west to play Stanford. California whipped UCLA, 35-0, in what was supposed to have been a crucial test. As a result they moved up two positions, to fourth. Next for the Bears (8-0) is San Francisco. Despite a 48-21 triumph over Mississippi State for a 9-0 record, Kentucky dropped a peg to fifth place in the standings with 43 firsts as compared to 36 for California. Kentucky has two to go, North Dakota and Tennessee. Vols, MSC Join SPORTS MIRROR By the Associated Press Today a year ago — Abe Greene, National Boxing association commissioner, was given a unanimous vote of confidence at annual convention. Five years ago — Tippy Larkin, 142, won a 10-round decision over Nick Moran, 139½, of Mexico. Ten years ago—Joe McCarthy signed a three-year contract to manage the New York Yankees at an annual salary of $35,000. Fifteen years ago—Princeton authorities, taking cognizance of Rose Bowl agitation, reiterated policy against playing post-season games. Jeff Would Rather Play Bears Again Than Washington LOS ANGELES (AP)—Coach Jeff Cravath, whose SC Trojans meet Washington here Saturday, would rather play California again than the Huskies. "California follows a pattern," Cravath told yesterday's meeting of Southern California Football Writers. "You know pretty well what they're going to do." That the Bears go right ahead and do it anyway is something else again. Washington," Cravath opined, "does anything, any time, anywhere." He called Husky quarterback Don Heinrich the most resourceful he's ever seen. "That At Full Strength "We may have to revise attack. Our plans call for mage this week. Every car in the battle for the rich guaranteed purse will be of the same type auto that Mr. and Mrs. America drive down the highway. Post-Race Check They will be the same automobiles which the factory delivers to your neighborhood dealer's showroom. In order to make certain that the lead-footed drivers live up to all the rules and regulations regarding the "stock car" requirements, every car in the race will be impounded for twenty-four hours after the classic. During this time all cars will be minutely checked by mechanical experts to see that no fancy touches have been added to the motor. Eastern critics say Army is one of the best clubs in the country. They say it doesn't even look like a college team, meaning it is that much better. It has a great defense. No team has passed for more than 15 yards against it. Its players are superbly conditioned. At Full Strength "We may have to revise our pass attack. Our plans call for scrimmage this week.
