Twelve Get Top Spot Votes As Army Regains First Place
NEW YORK—(AP)—The question of who has the best college football team in the country probably never has been more widely debated than right now.
Twelve teams received first place votes in today's latest Associated Press poll, which saw Army recapture the No. 1 position from Southern Methodist.
But the Cadets, who led the rankings until replaced by the southwesterns two weeks ago, didn't go to the top on a wave of overwhelming national acclaim.
More for OSU
They received only 88 of the 314 first place votes cast by sportswriters and broadcasters. That was six fewer than lavished on once-beaten Ohio State, which moved up from fourth to second.
Nine of the ten top teams—all but tenth-ranked Illinois—were rated first by from two to 94 voters. Three in the lower brackets received top mention.
Here's college football's new first ten:
Army, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas, California, Southern Methodist, Princeton, Miami, Illinois.
First Places
Oklahoma, which has a modern record 27-game winning streak going, received 48 first place votes while unbeaten Kentucky got 35. California was given 14, Texas 11, Miami 8, Princeton 4 and SMU 2.
Clemson, the 13th ranking eleven, polled seven No. 1 votes, unbeaten Wyoming, two and South Carolina, one.
The standings are figured on back from an opening game loss to SMU to smother five foes, barely were beaten out of first place.
Easy for Army
They received 2402 points compared with 2451 for Army. Five more No. 1 votes would have put them on top.
The Buckeyes, who walloped Northwestern Saturday, 32-0, will meet Wisconsin next.
Army, 28-13 conqueror of Penn, has a breather this week in New Mexico while the other ranking elevens have it fairly rugged.

Alexander Buried Near Birthplace
ST. PAUL, Neb. (AP)—The body of Grover Cleveland Alexander lay today in a quiet cemetery in the hills not far away from this central Nebraska town where he was born.
Alexander, whose pitching wizardry a generation ago elevated him to baseball's Hall of Fame, was buried yesterday with military services conducted by the American Legion. He had served in the AEF in the First World War.
The St. Louis Cardinals, for whom "Old Pete" had once played paid for the funeral.
Alexander died here Saturday of a heart ailment.
Alexander's former wife, Aimee, said $100 a month which Alex had collected after his playing days ended came from Sam Breadon, late president of the Cards. She said the money was paid through National headquarters and Alex always thought it was a pension from the league.
Bill Walsingham, Cardinal business manager, later commented the pension had been suggested by Breadon "but came from National League funds."

Vic Kelley, advance man for UCLA: "This is the best line Henry "Red" Sanders has ever coached. It is the best over on pass defense, with 10 interceptions this season. The team is alert to recover fumbles. I believe Coach Sanders would rate California slightly stronger than Illinois."
Cincy Tough
Coach Larry Slemering, College of Pacific: "When we play University of Cincinnati there next Saturday, we will be meeting a team with an impressive record. (Cincinnati defeated tough Texas Western, 32-0 and Hardin-Simmons, 19-7, among others but lost to William & Mary 14-20 and Kentucky 7-41).
"Cincinnati has a great offense end, Gene Kelly, who I am told has scored at least one touchdown in every game the last two years."
Thin Line, Backs
Dave Stidolph, advance man for Washington State: "We have a sophomore team, thin in the line and backfield. Stanford figures to beat us. However, we think we will show one of the best centers and line backers anywhere in"
Lavern Torgeson. Coach Fevashevski says Torgeson is best center he has ever seen.
Assistant Coach Pete Kmeto Stanford: "Washington State be thin in the line and backfield but if so I didn't notice it when scouted the team against Oregon last week. WSC used the platoon system throughout the game, with the exception of man at times. The team's Michigan-type offense looks good. We have a consistent gainer in half Daley.
"Marchie Schwartz is pleased with the first results of our th plateon system. The defense unit looked good and should improve."
Practice 'Fun' For Colonists
It's right there in the standings—if the Colonists fail to boat Santa Ana this week, they probably won't even be in the top half of the final standings—but they seemed quite unperturbed about their predicament as they ran through yesterday's practice session.
With Santa Ana coming into La Palma Park Friday night, the Colonists end what may be one of the shortest home seasons on record. Anaheim opened its home stand on October 13 against Covina. Now, on Nov. 10, they end it. Two games, both on the road, still remain with Orange and Santa Barbara.
Usual Stuff
It was the usual Monday afternoon drill for the varsity—limbering up, a lengthy blackboard discussion, and then some rougher stuff with a drill on the blocking dummy, and finally a scrummage.
But it was with an air of trivulity that the Colonists undertook all of their tasks. It even seeped down to the lower echelons.
The Jayvees were over on one side of the practice field with the task of learning Santa Ana plays supposedly in mind. Later they are supposed to run these against a varsity defense to present some idea of the Saint attack. It is extremely doubtful that the varsity will learn anything at all from the Jayvee version except that the Saints run from a single wing.

The world champion New York teams and the Boston Red Sox have more one representative. In addition to shortstop Phil Rizzuto, most popular of the 11 selec-tors, the Yanks landed outfielder DiMaggio and catcher Yogi Al-Maggio. The Red Sox provide first man Walt Dropo and utility Billy Goodman.

Under terms of the present Rose Bowl pact, no Big Ten team can go to Pasadena more than once in three years. Ohio State, after beating California 17-14 last January, thus is ineligible.
Howls from some quarters were raised in 1948 when Michigan won the Western Conference championship and second place Northwestern went to the Rose Bowl instead. Michigan was ineligible for the trip because it had competed in the Bowl the year previous.
Although the Pacific Coast has been shut out by the Big Ten in the four games thus far, many critics there still want the champion, and nothing but the champion. The Pacific Coast winner automatically enters the Rose Bowl.
May Loss Two
Possibly two conference defeats will blot the records of either Illinois or Wisconsin. Ohio State seems destined to charge through to the pennant undefended.
Because it plays a seven-game schedule, Wisconsin at this time has a slight edge over Illinois and its six-game league slate. The Badgers have been the only team to beat Illinois—2-0 in the most early in the campaign. In turn, Illinois trimmed Michigan last Saturday 7-0 in a snowstorm. Wisconsin's only loss was 20-13 to Michigan.
Both Bowl hopefuls must still play Ohio State. The Badgers face the Buckeyes who have an average of 472 points per league game this Saturday and then end their season against inept Minnesota, on November 25.
Figuring they lost to Ohio State but won over Minnesota, Wisconsin would wind up with a 5-2 Big Ten record.
Lifting Pirates New Rickey Task
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Branch Rickey, generally regarded as baseball's shrewdest executive, has a brand new challenge today—lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates out of the National league cellar.
Rickey is the new vice-president and general manager of the Bucs—a team that hasn't won a pennant since 1927.
The 68-year-old man with the bushy eyebrows and fat cigar didn't bat an eye yesterday; when Pirate President John Galbreath told a new conference the rumors about Rickey coming to the Bucs were true.
Can Extend
Rickey has a five-year contract at an unannounced salary. There's a clause permitting him to ex-
It's quite obvious that I am not a football coach, but I would like to make this one observation and tag-end it with a question. Ever notice the way that Ronnie Sanchez of the Bs throws a pass? Now what I want to know is why he can't throw the thing while standing on the turf?
Instead of making a fake and fading 'back' and heaving the ball like most T quarterbacks are prone to do, Sanchez has to run back, dance around until the last possible moment while waiting or the opposing line to romp in on him, and then jump into the air to throw.
Now Sanchez is a good passer, the records will attest to that. He has thrown all of the R passes this year and has completed about half of them. His passes have probably made more yards than all of the runners combined. But I shudder when I think of how fantastic his mark could have been if he'd thrown them with a good solid footing.
Harry Gilmer started this whole new trend of jump passing by hitting with such uncanny accuracy while passing from almost any position with Alabama. But then that was Harry Gilmer. And have you ever seen him with the Washington Redskins? He doesn't soouts hanging around the practice field lately.
When Joe Geri kicked those three field goals Sunday to beat the Eagles, the wire stories mentioned that it equaled a record, but it failed to mention the previous holders. Just to satisfy the curious, those who did it before:
Hank Gillo of Racine did it twice, against Rochester in 1922 and against Akron in 1923. His kicks in the latter covered 50, 49, and 30 yards.
Ralph Kercheval, Brooklyn, did it against Philadelphia in 1939.
Detroit's Phil Martinovich did it against the New York Giants last year.
Dick Poillon, Washington, and Venton Yablonski, Cards both did it last year against Green Bay.
The record of four field goals in a game is held by Paddy Driscoll of the Cards, who accomplished the trick with drop kicks. He was one of the greatest in this lost art and some of his NFL records are amazing.
Consider, for example, that a drop kicker holds the mark for the most field goals in one season with 11, and two other times no kicked 10. Driscoll also holds the lifetime mark with 49 field goals, six ahead of Ward Cuff, the leading all-time placement footer.
Besides his record assault of four drop kicks in one game, he twice kicked three. There have been longer placements, but he slammed drop kicks through the

tend the contract another five years.
What will hapepn to the club's present general manager, porty Roy Hamey?
Rickey said:
"I'm not familiar with the titles in the club's corporate structure, but I see nothing wrong with having two or three general managers."
"Roy will continue to do much the same job as he has in the past, concentrating on players. My son (Branch Rickey Jr.) will have a similar responsibility."
Rickey said in his new contract there are no provisions for buying Pirate stock.
How About Meyer?
"Will Bill Meyer be back to finish the last year of his contract as manager?" he was asked.
"I've been giving that a thought the last few days but I haven't made up my mind yet. I'll be able to answer that in a month."
Rickey has been in baseball through both world wars. He joined the Cardinals in 1917 and remained until 1943. By that time he had built the major's most far flung farm system and had been rewarded with several pennants.
Rickey switched to the Dodgers in 1943. He built up another mammoth farm system and produced a club which won pennants. He wrote another chapter in baseball history by hiring Jackie Robinson, the first Negro to play in the majors.
