Center Anaheim Phone 446 Talbert Bean Farmers Eye Sewage as Substitute for Salt-laced Well Water Talbert area farmers urgently in need of water for pre-irrigation of their bean crops, with many of their wells contaminated by salt water from the ocean, today doubtfully considered a risky substitute offered to them—sewage effluent with a salt and boron content that might do harm to their land, crops and underground water supply. At a conference with representatives of various public agencies in the office of the Orange County Water district, the farmers were told that reclamation of usable water from sewage was a long-range project and that there is no practical way to separate the harmful industrial wastes from other sewage in the Joint Outfall System lines to give them an immediate supply of safe water. So, as it was expressed by Vernon Heil, president of the water district, the farmers may take their chances if they wish with the sewage effluent "as is," subject to health and water pollution regulations. If they decide to do that, cooperation of the water district and other agencies was promised in working out a plan for tapping the JOS outfall line to pre-irrigate some 3500 acres. It was sharply impressed on the group by several speakers that the immediate solution of the water shortage lies in obtaining Colorado river water through the Metropolitan Water district, as now contemplated by the proposed creation of Orange County Municipal Water district. W. H. Samuelson, president of Waste Water Disposal Co., observed that cost of reclaiming sewage water would be so great that it will be much more practical to import Colorado river water through the MWD. George Kellogg of Yorba Linda, widely known in Legion circles, reported the award of the commendation to Nixon and said it was based first on his work in breaking the Alger Hiss espionage case, and generally on his work with the Un-American Activities Committee which pursued the Hiss case and others growing out of the treason. This statement was made by Frank M. Wright, chief of the Division of Public School Administration of the State department of Education, at the recent meeting of the Board of Managers of the California Congress of Parents and Teachers. "If this measure passed, it will be the biggest backward step taken in many a year, because no school district in this state can afford a 22% cut in its finances without shortening the school year or cutting its special services," added Mr. Wright. An all-out, last-minute effort is being made by Parent-Teacher workers in all communities of the state to acquaint citizens with the actual school losses which would occur in their areas: These figures have been worked out in cooperation with school administrators and county assessors.
