Surgeons Hear of Drug Substitute for ACTH
By ALTON L. BLAKESLEE
Associated Press Science Reporter
BOSTON (P)—Discovery of an inexpensive drug that seems to act like the wonder hormone ACTH was announced to the American college of surgeons.
The drug, an old one named Furacin, may become a plentiful new medicine against arthritis, rheumatic fever and perhaps some kinds of cancer. Tests on humans are just starting. Furacin is derived from furfural, a by-product in milling flour and soybeans.
The new discovery is that Furacin apparently prods the adrenal glands to produce cortisone. This prodding is what ACTH does.
ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) comes from the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. It acts on the adrenal glands, which lie over the kidneys.
Both ACTH and cortisone bring dramatic relief from rheumatoid arthritis, knock out rheumatic fever, and have temporarily helped against some kinds of cancer.
The hormone-like action of Furacin was reported by Dr. Charles E. Friedgood and Dr. Charles B. Ripstein of Maimonides hospital and the State University Medical Center, New York.
They gave it to mice with sarcoma, a cancer of connective tissue. Mice ordinarily die of this cancer in 21 days. When they got Furacin, they lived nearly twice as long. When giver cortisone, they

When giver cortisone, they lived about 45 days. The cancers glew slower, and some cancer cells died, when either drug was given.
Both cortisone and furacin made the mice's adrenal glands grow larger and become more active.
But furacin didn't help mice whose adrenal glands were taken out. This was the hint that furacin acts on and through the adrenal gland, much as ACTH does.
Cortisone and ACTH temporarily help some humans suffering from leukemia, cancer of the blood, and cancer of lymphatic tissue. A few humans now are being given furacin to see what it may do to their cancers, Dr. Friedgood said.
The drug can be given by mouth, or by injections into the muscles. The only bad effect noticed so far is that it makes people nauseated, or causes vomiting. What it may do to cancers isn't known yet, but any good effects are expected to be only temporary.
Other humans soon will get furacin for rheumatoid arthritis and for rheumatic fever. If furacin works, it may become a far cheaper drug for these diseases than the hormones, which still are scarce. An effective dose of furacin costs only about 1/100th the price of cortisone or ACTH, the surgeon said.

Alpha Beta Holds Service Banquet
Some 167 employees of Alpha Beta Food Markets, Inc., along with their wives or husbands enjoyed a banquet at Knott's Berry Farm last night. In all, 375 guests of the company enjoyed the affair.
The occasion was the annual meeting of Alpha Beta’s Service Club, composed of employees who had been with the company for five years or more. Forty-three new members were inducted into the club this year, all of whom have just reached their five-year majority.
Each club member wears a gold service pin with the name of the company and the figure 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 in the center, indicating their seniority. The 25 and 30-year pins are diamond studded.
New pins are given only when an employee completes a new five-year unit of service.
In addition to the 43 of the Freshman group, six receive 10-year pins, one 15-year, four 20-year, and three 30-year.
Claude W. Edwards, General Manager of the Company, who presented the pins, expressed the company's appreciation of the loyalty and faithful service of the club members.
A brief address was made by Dr. J. Whitcomb Brougher, in which he stressed the spiritual values involved in the close and prolonged union of company and employee.
Then followed the delightful play, "Mother Is A Freshman," presented by the Penthouse Players, of Altadena, which kept the members and guests entertained until a late hour.
Valuable door prizes were awarded as the last feature of the evening. Music throughout the dinner was furnished by Ray Livingston and his music, well known and popular orchestra.
The large company broke up expressing the belief that Alpha Beta is a “swell place to work.”
All branches of the company were represented in the club, including the 22 retail food markets, the meat packing plant, the warehouses and general offices.
