For Results and Quick Page 7 Anaheim Gazette, Wednesday, Nov. 1, 1950 Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER PATRIOTISM—Reese H. Taylor, the president of the Union Oil Company of California, believes in the American way of life. He is one of the country's free-enterprise advocates who is working to preserve America's heritage. Apparently, he has considered the appalling fact that too few of us exercise our voting franchise, for he wrote a letter to all the Union Oilers. It said: Many times in our lives, each of us has had to meet certain obligations, just as we enjoy certain privileges. It is a simple honest fact, known to each of us, that we in this country have these privileges because down through the years, Americans have met their obligations fairly and squarely no matter what the cost or sacrifice. It may seem a long distance from the international conference table or the battleground to the voting booth in your particular community. It may seem a long distance from the international conference table or the bottleground to the voting booth in your particular community. But it isn't. In this nation, by the grace of God and the foresight of our ancestors, they are right next door to one another. This is not so in the vast majority of other lands. In our lifetimes, we have seen the people in nation after nation lose the privilege of determining who will represent them not only in international affairs, but in deciding how they as individuals must live. Too often they lost this privilege because they did not meet the obligation of voting for the candidate of their choice until eventually it was too late and there was but one candidate. In this nation's last presidential election only 52 percent of the people of voting age bothered to register and vote, and neither one of the major parties receives as many as one out of four of the potential votes. It is not a happy record. Most of the great calamities that have happened in this world have happened because the individual citizen has failed to act. It has always been somebody else's responsibility to think, to talk and to vote. And when the calamity has occurred, that, too, is always "somebody else's fault." But the truth is that you and I and all the other people are responsible for what happens to the United States. I urge you to cast your ballot on November 7. Vote for whom you will, but vote and meet your obligation. And that was signed by Reese H. Taylor, president of the Union Oil Company of California. There is a lot in that letter. It is worth reading and re-reading. It is worth analyzing. The president of one of California's leading oil companies can read the handwriting on the wall. He is worried—worried about the citizens of the United States failing to register their vote. The utter lack of interest in this off-year election is appalling. The privilege of casting a free ballot apparently isn't appreciated when you have H. The privilege of casting a free ballot apparently isn't appreciated when you have it. You don't care for your voice in the government when you have it, when you haven't got it, it's too late to squawk. VOTE—Anaheimers lets get out the vote! Let's show California and the nation that when Anaheimers do something it is done right. Anaheim staged a successful Halloween Festival. Anaheim is a clean, thriving balanced community of churches, schools and light industry. Anaheim is a good place to live. Let's keep it that way. Take time out from your everyday chores next Tuesday and go to the polls. Vote. Vote for the candidates of your choice, but vote. Let's get out the vote. Anaheimers. Let's show the nation that Anaheim is alert and its people anxious and willing to do their part in maintaining the AMERICAN WAY—the Anaheim way—of life. REMEMBER—There are a lot of would-be dictators who'd like to tell you what to do and what not to do. Don't give them a chance. Vote and preserve the freedom and heritage that is America. When a tidal wave swept over Port Royal, Jamaica, in 1692, people said it was contribution for the pirate lair's sins. PARADE GUEST—Governor Earl Warren, accompanied by Ana Chamber of Commerce President Warren Ashleigh, toured the last night as the extravaganza got underway.
