He has the head of a eagle, the body of a lion, the tail of a dragon and the wings of an eagle. PITTSBURGH (AP) — So you'd like to be a glamorous movie star, or win a beauty contest? Before you try, listen to what's been happening to a couple of gals who made the grade. They're ready to offer proof it isn't always a life of luxury. Lovely Alexis Smith has been a movie headliner since her first big role opposite Charles Boyer in "The Constant Nymph." Her most recent picture, just being released, is "Wyoming Mail," with Stephen McNally. Husky-voiced Emilee Longacre of Phoenixville, Pa., only 19, went to the Atlantic City pageant this year as Miss Pennsylvania. She's a pert blonde of medium size and lovely figure who sings a remarkable torch song. The two have been traveling for five days now as feature attractions aboard the Pennsylvania Week train. That's the commonwealth's unique promotional stunt a 1248-mile tour to 29 cities to encourage Pennsylvanians to believe in their state. At every stop there's a 40-minute show from a flatcar that has been converted into a stage. Alexis arrives on the stage wearing a mink coat and during her dialogue with master of ceremonies Ezra Stone—radi'd by Henry Aldrich—has difficulty determining the height of the microphone. She's tall, he's short, and the mike can't be both high and low. So first Alexis takes off her shoes, stands in her stockinged feet on the grimy floor. She's still too tall. Then she kneels down; worse yet, Finally they solve it by getting a soap box for Ezra. But the routine hardly fits the "glamour" of a movie actress, even in the final scene where Alexis scampers to the sideline arm-in-arm with some local boy "selected" as her "next leading man." And what happens to Emilie? Well, when she comes on stage there's a boy waiting to hear her sing "You're My Everything." All through the number the youngster is prodded by Stone to put his arms around Emilie. That the boy is usually redfaced and squirming in embarrassment only adds to the merriment of his hometown friends in the audience. It's no easy matter to sing at all under the circumstances out Emilie carries off the assignment expertly with the aid of her experience singing for the Benny Goodman and Woodie Herman bands. But it's hardly the sort of role you'd expect, "Miss Pennsylvania" to get. The routine goes on at least four times a day, and often again at night. In between there are notables to be greeted and occasionally, when time permits the girls get a bit of food, a bath and a little sleep. Add to all this one factor, that neither of the girls is paid a cent for their all-week work and it looks like an even slimmer reward for their accomplishments. What do the girls think of the trip and the work? "Wonderful," says Alexis. "I'm having the time of my life," comments Emilie. Senator Lehman (Continue from Page 1) that has to come out in public, the president said. He added that, yes, it certainly would have an effect on the New York election and won't hurt Democratic chances. Mr. Truman also said he expects the Democrats will win next month's Congressional election by a landslide, increasing their majorities in both Senate and House. He doesn't plan to do any campaigning, he said. He wouldn't comment on election prospects in individual states, but said he hopes Senator Francis J. Myers wins in Pennsylvania. Myers is opposed by Republican Gov. James H. Duff. The Hanley letter had repercussions in California. It was brought up there by James Roosevelt, son of the late president, who is opposing Republican Gov. Earl Warren for reelection. Asking why Lt. Gov. Goodwin J. Knight got out of the race for governor early this year, Roosevelt suggested there might be a parallel to Hanley's withdrawal in New York. He referred to Dewey as "the senior partner in the firm of Dewey and Warren" and asked: "What went on here in California?" Warren retorted that he had never discussed the question of withdrawal with Knight and he said of Roosevelt: "Is there no end to this man's trickery? He has no equal since patent medicines were sold on street corners from a buckboard." Sheriff Musick said that so far as the bullet holes show, the shot might have been fired from a rifle. If he could find the missing bullet he could determine who dawn on weapon it came from and could identify the gun if it were located, he said. The bullet had entered the side of the top of Wood's car traveled through the car on slight rise, and went out the right side of the top. Wood stopped his car as soon as the shot was fired and said that he was so bewildered that did not think to get a description of the other car or its license. Had the bullet holes repaired, next day and intended not to injure the incident, he stated. However, his council colleague Jack Adams, who is supportive Wood in a demand for a police department shakeup at Fullerton told of the attempt Tuesday. By that time the sheriff's office said that the trail was so cold to make solution of the case most hopeless. If Wood had reported the shooting promptly, said Sheriff Musick, the question whether he had his self fired the shot in an effort call attention to his crusade against the police department could have been disposed of making a paraffin test of hands. Such a test would shatter minute particles of powder on skin if he had fired the gun. GOP Pre-Hatch Chick Counting Tabbed Dangerous Unjustified over-confidence about the outcome of the November 7 elections is hurting chances of success for Republicans throughout California. Laughlin E. Waters, vice-chairman of the Republican State Committee, said today. Waters, who just completed intensive two-week survey of political situation in 40 of state's 58 counties, said, "Whill found the prospects of success be reasonably encouraging, a supporter who believes the Republicans have the election in the state is just plain crazy." "The thing to remember is that no matter how good the campaign look the time to celebrate an election victory is after the votes counted." there's a boy waiting to hear her sing "You're My Everything." All through the number the youngster is prodded by Stone to put his arms around Emilie. That the boy is usually red-faced and squirming in embarrassment only adds to the merriment of his hometown friends in the audience. It's no easy matter to sing at all under the circumstances out Emilie carries off the assignment expertly with the aid of her ex-New York. He referred to Dewey as "the senior partner in the firm of Dewey and Warren" and asked: "What went on here in California?" Warren retorted that he had never discussed the question of withdrawal with Knight and he said of Roosevelt: "Is there no end to this man's trickery? He has no equal since patent medicines were sold on street corners from a buckboard."
