For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER 'ROUND TOWN—Charlie Pearson will be one of the speakers at the 52nd annual conference of the League of California Cities. He is the league president ... Walter Swanberger, the ANAHEIM merchant, will open his new men's furnishing store in Fullerton next week. Ed Huff will be his partner in the Fullerton venture ... the Rev. Phillip R. Selfridge has a sense of humor. He recently described Dr. Albert Steward as a "Laplander who was born where Fullerton laps over into ANAHEIM." Dr. Steward was a Methodist missionary and teacher in China for many years. He spent two of his high school years in ANAHEIM and two in North ANAHEIM (yeah, Fullerton, t'yuh, suh). ... Alexander Anderson, a high school oil production instructor with vision and foresight, developed the underground oilwell survey system. That was like Hans Kohlenbergers, who developed a refrigerator system while working as an iceman. Theron Wilson, the horticulturist, is working for the Department of Agriculture down Arizona way. His little Penney's Converts Water into Savings The Anaheim J. C. Penney Co. tomorrow only is staging a "water damage" sale and store-wide clearance of broken lots, odd sizes and lots, and other merchandise which will not Anaheim shoppers an estimated $6000 saving over regular prices. The sale is an outgrowth of water pouring into the Penney storage rooms from an open pipe in an adjoining business firm. Because of the water a considerable amount of stored goods had to be removed from packing cartons. Space requirements dictated the sale. W. J. Paprocki, assistant manager of Penney's, reports that savings on the goods will range from 30 to 85 per cent. He said "this is the greatest money-saving sale ever offered by our firm." Because of the highly desirable nature of the goods and the low prices, Penney's has added 20 extra clerks to the regular staff to insure prompt and efficient service to customers. Mr. Paprocki suggests that shopper plan to do their buying as early as possible in order to take advantage of a full stock of goods. "Judging from the goods offered, I'd say these sale items are going to go fast", he said. The store opens at 9:30 a.m. Sports Headliners To Honor Warren PROFILES—Sgt. Frank C. Taylor, the former ANAHEIM scoutmaster who saw his duty and did it, is to be congratulated. A World War II vet, he saw his country’s need in an hour of crisis. ANAHEIM can be justly proud of this ANAHEIMER, for it is men like Frank Taylor who make America great. OPPORTUNITY—Tire mans public spirit; citizens on the Hallowe’en committee are really working to put ANAHEIM and ANAHEIMERS on the map. Their efforts for ANAHEIM are praiseworthy indeed. The Hallowe’en Festival has become something more than a civic enterprise. It is becoming a springboard to success. Through the Slick Chick contest, ANAHEIM lovelies are given an opportunity to step into the limelight. It was this contest which spotlighted Priscilla Orman and started her on a career. She’s an RKO starlet. Arlene Anderson and LaVonne Hart, other winners, are starting on the road to success. This year, arrangements have been made to have television viewers select the 1950 Slick Chick which automatically should skyrocket the ANAHEIM gal to prominence. WHAT’S IN A NAME—Long Beach has a new detective team—Goforth and Ketchum. STUFF—Elwood Case, the gentleman who acted as manager of the Orange Lionettes, will manage the Orange Chamber of Commerce and develop a refrigerator system while working as an iceman. Theron Wilson, the horticulturist, is working for the Department of Agriculture down Arizona way. His little brother, Barney, is a floriculturist at Walter Knott’s place. Kepler Lutschg wanted to become a horticulturist when he was in school 30 years ago, while his brother, Clarke, studied engineering. Kepler is a petroleum engineer. Brother Clarke is one of the Southland’s outstanding landscape gardeners. He is a landscaper by appointment to the movie stars. Roe White will tell you that he landscaped Walt Disney’s hacienda. Sports Headliners To Honor Warren More than 125 top sports headliners are expected to attend next Monday night’s “Parade of Champions” honoring Governor Larry Warren. Over 40 already have accepted invitations to the dinner an hour-long television show scheduled at the Hollywood Athletic Club, Everett L. Sanders, Senior said yesterday. Sanders, head of the 350-member “Sports Committee for Warren,” said acceptances have been received from such samplers as Henry Armstrong, Ralph De Palma, Dean B. Cromwell, Arnold (ligger), Statz, Maurie Luxford, Geferino Garcia, Owen Churchill, John J. Garrland, and Peter De Paolo. Other famous members of the Committee who have been invited to the show, which will be televised from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday over Station KLAC, Channel 43, include the following: Jack Dempsey, W.E. (Bill) Eslick, Jim Thorpe, James J. Jeffries, Fidel La Barba, Helen Willis Hoark, Manuel Ortiz, Glen S. (Pop) Warner, Ty Cobb, Kenny Washington, Win Clark, Jes Cravath, John A. Heydler, Dan Crowley, John T. (Chief) Meyers, Ellsworth Vines. Among yesterday’s acceptances were Al McCoy, Mrs. Evelyne Hall, Paul H. Helms, F.C. (Babe) Herman, Fred Cady, James M. Crandall, Braven Dyer, Deke Houlgato, Al Krueger, Jimmy McLarnan, Harold (Stubby) Krueger, Alma Richards, Willie Ritchie, Mrs. Gregg Lifur, Gig Rooney, Leo B. Ward, Stephen (Suey) Welch, Harry A. Williams, Floyd Clymer, Jimmy Kilty, H.J. Thiessen, John M. (Jack) Root, W.R. (Bill) Schroeder, the Rev Herbert Smith. UNION OIL SHOWS BIG GROWTH IN 60 YEARS LOS ANGELES (P)—Reese H. Is it fair that the fair should spend $250,000 of the State Board of Public Works' money at this time? Maybe public monies should be spent on civilian defense first. Irvin Chapman, the Placentia citrus grower and oilman, is Northern Orange county's representative on the county fair board. R.M.C. (Alphabet) Fullenwider, is the newly hired manager. Clara VanHorebcke, ANAHEIM Hi's popular new football coach, is a proud man these days. He has a new daughter to be proud of and an ANAHEIM football team that any mentor could be proud to coach. REMEMBER—you're young only once—but once enough. UNION OIL SHOWS BIG GROWTH IN 60 YEARS LOS ANGELES (P)—Reese H. Taylor, president of Union Oil Co. of California, reports that in 60 years the firm has grown from one employing 100 workers to a company employing 7200 today. At a 60th anniversary banquet last night, he said that after Union Oil was organized at Santa Paula, October 17, 1890, the barrels of crude oil produced in the first year totaled 85,000. Now, he said, the annual production is 26,000,000 barrels a year. Dick Lane, television star, will be guest M.C. at Haliowe'en Festival & Fair, La Palma Park, Friday, October 27. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
