Mrs. Bateson says she and her husband both feel that this latest will be more than just a short tour of duty. The Lieutenant, she adds, is thinking seriously of remaining in the service after the shooting stops. And he seems to have a knack for catching duty in far-off places.
Hence she herself is looking to a possible foreign tour. The idea of going to a foreign country isn't too appealing, she admits. But appealing or not, the prospect of reunion doesn't leave much room for discussion.

Social Security Act Adds 500,000 Persons to Roles
Coverage under the new Social Security Act is going to add approximately 500,000 persons in the ten Southern California counties to records of the Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service according to Collector Robert A. Riddell. This coverage, which becomes effective January 1st, 1951, will include many groups of employees who were herefore exempt such as certain farm and household workers, and the employees of non-profit and charitable organizations when joint request is made for coverage by the organization and its employees.
The new law also provides an avenue for coverage under qualifying conditions of self-employed individuals whose net earnings for the calendar year are $400.00 or more up to $3,600.00 limitation for any one year.
Mr. Riddell further stated that provision is also made in the new law for coverage of many State and local government employees, as well as Federal civilian employees not now covered by a qualifying benefit plan.

Wood was unable to give the sheriff's office a description of the car other than that he thought it was a sedan of dark color.
Sheriff James Musick assigned Delective Lieut. Jake Klein to the case. Capt. Tom McGaff and his deputy in the Criminal Identification bureau also are working on the case. Musick said they found traces of the bullet hole in Wood's car which Wood had repaired shortly after the shooting.
Disclosure of the attempt on Wood was made yesterday by Councilman Adams, who had been informed of the incident by Wood.

The sheriff's office said it is considering the possibility the shooting may have been merely an attempt to frighten Wood in connection with city government affairs.
Wood gave no explanation of why he didn't report the shooting.
Utility Workers Ask Wage Boost
In a strategy meeting of the AFL Chemical Workers representing employees of the Southern Counties Gas Company and the Utility Workers Union of America CIO representing employees of Southern California Gas Company a resolution was passed unanimously, demanding a general wage increase in these companies.
Although represented by different unions, both of the gas companies are affiliated with the same parent company, the Pacific Lighting Co.
The Utility Workers CIO had originally requested a general wage increase from Southern California Gas company and had been refused, according to J. A. Anderson, business agent.
Queen of the Fair will be featured on Jack Bailey's "Queen for a Day" Mutual Network Show, Monday, October 30.

The court denied his divorce petition and also his suit to set aside
the deed by which he had conveyed his small home near Orange to his 57 year old wife, Josie Shaffer.
Shaffer claimed that his wife had not kept her promise at the time of her marriage May 18, 1946,
to take care of him in return for the deed to his property. She left him two years later, he claimed.
Mrs. Shaffer had a different version.
She told of meeting Shaffer through a matrimonial agency and later coming to California from Tennessee for the marriage. He had told her he was 57, she stated,
but when she arrived he admitted to 75 and she agreed to proceed with the marriage.
Later, she said, she learned that he was actually 85 at the time of the marriage.
She went on a visit to Tennessee two years later and while there received a letter from her husband

PE Trainmen
Strike Averted
LOS ANGELES (AP)—A threatened strike of trainmen and bus drivers on the Pacific Electric interurban company was averted today by the acceptance of an 11 cent hourly wage increase.
H. W. Wilkins, chairman of the grievance committee of the Brotherhiod of Railroad Trainmen, said union members "overwhelm-ingly" accepted the company offer in an initial vote. He said other members are yet to vote in San Bernardino, Riverside and other outlying districts.
Wilkins said acceptance of the offer "apparently eliminates any possibility of a strike" against the company which daily handles more than 300,000 passengers and huge quantities of freight.
The increase hikes the hourly scale for one-man car operators to $1.58 and to two-man operators to $1.48.
