... A Sincere Gesture of Goodwill
Diwata Aldaba is a young Philippine scholarship recipient helped by the B-PW generosity to deserving students. Here are excerpts from a letter she wrote thanking her California sponsors for their assistance.—Ed.
It seems only yesterday that your organization made it possible for my fondest dreams to come true.
Under the Federation's patient and wise direction, I soon found myself successfully launched upon my course of studies in social welfare work at the University of California. This course has been priceless to me.
I wish to express my profound thanks and gratitude to the Business and Professional Women's clubs of California who have been "fairy godmother" to me.
My scholarship is the working symbol of a sincere gesture of goodwill and helpfulness from a group of women working toward an ideal of progress for their less privileged sisters.
Believe me, the happiest part of the project has been being with all of you.

There’s more to this business of being a painter than merely standing in front of an easel and dabbing at it with a brush and some paints—at least there is the way Armin Heying, 863 South Claudina street, does it.
Student, researcher, carpenter, photographer, business executive—Heying frequency is all of these during the period that he spends on a single painting.
All of this started some 20 years ago when Heying started putting more time and effort on what had been merely a spart-time hobby. And it has continued to grow since then. Although Heying terms his sales as only “fair,” he does admit that he makes enough to cover expenses and to show a little profit.

occupies the better portion of one wall of his undersize studio. Despite utilization of nearly all of his space, Heying is still cramped in his garage studio. Paintings adorn most of the wall space, with one area reserved for brushes and paints. His canvas and tripod stand off to one side, directly below a fluorescent light—one which has been smeared with red paint, incidentally, since it does not contain that color while throwing out all of the others in the spectrum.
Painting has to be more than a hobby, since it is quite expensive, and Heying estimates that he has about $400 invested in his studio alone. He pointed out two brushes that stood near the wall. Each, he said, cost nearly $2.
“They’re genuine sables,” he said. “Russian red sables. That’s the only thing I don’t like about them.

The studio has almost been out-grown now and Heying plans to build larger quarters, but the present world situation makes this future moving indefinite.
A first glance at the paintings that adorn the walls of his home and his studio make one definite impression, and that one by numbers. Better than half of them are desert scenes.
He made no secret of the reason for his preference for this type of painting.
“First of all, they seem to sell better,” he said. “And I also derive more enjoyment from painting these desert scenes.”
Despite this majority, Heying says that he has been to the desert only four or five times.

He made no secret of the reason for his preference for this type of painting.
"First of all, they seem to sell better," he said. "And I also derive more enjoyment from painting these desert scenes."
Despite this majority, Heying says that he has been to the desert only four or five times. Usually he snaps color photographs on these trips and the resulting paintings are drawn from both the photographs and from memory.
Heying does almost all of the work that is necessary for turning out the finished product. The front part of his garage contains a workshop where he assembles frames and attaches canvases prior to starting work on a painting.
Time consumed in making a painting varies, of course, with the subject, size, ambitiousness of the work, but Heying estimates that most of them take between 40 and 50 hours. It is hard to judge the time accurately because he is frequently working on four or five at one time, and Heying admits that he is a "mood" painter—sometimes working many hours during the day, and, at others, neglecting the canvas for days on end.
Probably the most ambitious work undertaken by Heying was "The Resurrection", a mammoth painting, 36 by 46 inches, that took him six months to complete. This does not include time spent in research before the actual work started. Since the paintings must be correct in content, as well as in the more obvious factors, Heying spent a great deal of time in reading and in talking to several ministers before he started painting.
