War Impact Produces Enollment Jump For High School Cadet Corps Program
War's impact on Anaheim Union high school has been clearly evidenced in stronger, more conscientious interest in the school's California Cadet Corps training program. Capt. William Hicks, commandant, pointed out today.
With military service conceivably "just around the corner" or many high school boys, the program's enrollment has jumped substantially, he declares. Ninety-eight cadets are currently in training, compared to 75 last year, and even lesser numbers in prior years. The entire program, additionally, has lost much of its original "play soldier" approach and become a hard, reactive course in military tactics.
Marching drill, firing on the range, and off-campus field maneuvers are highlights of the present training program. Activities are conducted under the eye of student Commander Leonard Weaver. Other student officers include Russell Dilbeck, second in command; Lyle Bass, supply officer; and Enoch Peterson and Al Lattin, range officers.
Proud of their top-notch marksmanship records, the cadet corps last year boasted shooting honors that included Don Barnett's winning of the Governor trophy (given for the highest individual rifle score in the state) and Alfred Lavin's record for small bore rifle.

Today, as a preface to the event, a three minute talk was made at one of the civic clubs in the city. On Monday and Tuesday more talks will be made to other clubs. The Lions club, Kiwanis, Rotary, Elks, Optimist, American Legion, Altrusa, Ebell and other groups will be visited.

Lions Governor Visits, Hears a Talk on Russia
Esper Kniser, Lions club district governor, was the guest of honor at the Lions club meeting noon at the Elks club. The group heard an address by Dr. Alexan Renner, refugee from Hungary who detailed his experiences with Russian prisoner of war in Slovakia in World War I.
Dr. Renner was an officer-in-hungarian army when he was captured by the Russians. He spent six years as a prisoner before escaped the Russians and went China where he practiced medicine for 28 years.
In two weeks Dr. Renner will turn to discuss his years in China. Program chairman for the day was Rex Coons. Next week Lions club will hear Mrs. Ma Bauer, of Glendale, philosophy and lecturer.

"We should sit tight until we have a definite proposal to work on," said Everett Cone, along with Arthur Shipkey, also called for specific information as to what other schools were paying their teachers before taking action.
Earlier, Cone called attention to the surtax bill, now in the committee stage, which congressmen will take up when they resume business next month. He said it contained the possibility of taxation which might wipe out any salary increases granted.
Ryan also asked that time be allowed to prepare a definite proposal and with this the group agreed to hold off action.
Earlier, trustees accepted officially the deed for the Arthur Christianson property for which they put up $8825. The property is for use in high school expansion. Then they moved to stand pat on their offer of $8375 for the adjoining property of Morris Mandeville. Mandeville is asking $8825 for his holdings.
