Well known businessmen, bankers and investment brokers will participate in the series of lectures and discussions which started this week. Under the direction of the Santa Ana college evening division, Miss Dorothy Decker held an organizational meeting this week and announced that the class is open to both men and women in Santa Ana and vicinity. Wayne L. Butterbaugh, superintendent of Savanna School District had sent notices to all the parents in the district. L. A. (Dan) Patch, administrative assistant to the Orange county board of supervisors for civilian defense, was the speaker. Twenty-eight names were turned in by the secretary as men willing to serve on a fire unit which will be the start of a volunteer fire department for Stanton. The first volunteer, untrained as a fireman, he is is willing to take county course of instruction. He is Melvin S. Huss of Hanson Manor, an employee of the Essex Wire Co. Huss stated he believes in civilian defense as an excellent procedure, having served in the navy 29 months in World War II where he earned five battle stars in the Asiatic-Pacific theater. He was on an oil tanker as a boiler man, Water Tender 1st Class, USS Tallulah. Later he was a sea plane tender on the oil ship USS Duxberry Bay. Compared this kind of duty, Huss says being a fireman is a snap. He is married and has two small sons, Wayne and Jerry. The second defense meeting has been called at the Stanton school Monday evening, Oct. 16: this meeting, Wednesday, October 17 at Magnolia school No. 1, last meeting at Magnolia No. 2, Friday Oct. 20. Then they granted an IOOF request to raise $250-$300 needed to pay indebtedness incurred and taxes. The first new science building on the southwest corner of the campus was completed and occupied by math and science classes at the end of the recent spring term. The second building immediately north of the finished structure is now rapidly nearing completion in the same style of architecture and linked with the first by an arched arcade similar to existing covered walkways about the grounds. These arcades serve as sheltered ways to and from various buildings housing classrooms, assembly halls and administrative offices. The second new earthquake-proof science building will be ready for occupancy by Christmas, it is announced. Administrators, faculty members and engineers met to consider further, building plans for a new structure on campus, to be located immediately north of the superintendent's office in the main building. Plans call for 17 new classrooms and a modern study hall, to take care of increasing student body population at FUHS. Following decisions by the faculty concerning necessary facilities and room arrangements for the new study and classroom building, the plans must clear the State Division of Architecture and other safety councils before actual construction work can begin.
