For Results and Quick Page 7 Anaheim Gazette, Monday, October 2, 1950 DRAWING CARD—Helen Weir, Anaheim Junior Chamber of Commerce candidate for Queen of the Anaheim Hallowe'en Fair, drew the lucky ticket which won a Kelvinator electric range for a Corona del Mar man Saturday night at Hartfield Jewelers. Watching the proceedings are, left, Al Lambert, jewelry store manager and proprietor Jack Hartfield. More than 2000 shoppers had stubs in the drawing box for Saturday night's big moment. Beach Man Wins Hartfield Prize A Corona Del Mar man Thomas E. Vick, 430½ Avocado ave., was the lucky winner at Hartfield Jewelers free drawing last Saturday night. As per his indicated choice on the drawing stub, Mr. Vick is now the possesser of a brand new Kelvinator electric range. And all it cost him was the effort to write his name on the ticket. Helen Weir, currently Anaheim Junior Chamber of Commerce candidate for Queen of the Anaheim Hallowe'en Fair, pulled the lucky ticket out of the box. More than 2000 persons deposited tickets in the box in hopes of winning one of the many prizes offered, according to proprietor Jack Hartfield. Of these, upwards of 100 put in appearane at the 108 W. Center st. jewelry store on Saturday night. People with tickets in the drawing were eligible to win their choices of such nationally-known appliances and television sets bearing the trademarks of Packard Bell, Philco, Dumont, RCA, Hoffman, Bendix, Kelvinator, Western Holly, Thor and many others. Special appliances included washers, freezers, refrigerators, ranges, ironers and others. Excelsior Topples Newport Beach, 7-0 Newport's hopes for a success- AUHS Faculty Club Begins Campaign To Defeat Propositions One, Six An organized campaign to defeat Propositions One and Six on the November 7 ballot was put into action Saturday by Anaheim Union High School Faculty Club. With intent of immediately contacting most major leaders and organizations in the community, the group plans to label dangers in both measures for prompt public attention. They point out that Proposition 6, legalizing all forms of commercial gambling in California, would place absolute control in the hands of a five-man commission named in the act itself. It, furthermore, would make no changes in present old age pensions. The promoters of the act have, they say, in fact, carefully provided that before one cent is paid out of the gambling license fund for pensions that administrative expenses of the commission be paid in full. Under provisions of the proposition, professional gambling on the results of high school and college sports would be permitted and a conceivable delinquency problem originated. AND, despite claims, it appears unlikely that gambling receipts would not reduce taxes to any great extent. Local enforcement expense, not allowed for in the bill, would, in fact, add new taxation locally. Promoters of the bill, furthermore, are the same five men to be named to the commission, and are biling establishments. In regard to Proposition 1, the teachers similarly urge a defeat at the polls. The measure would exempt all personal property from taxation by any level of government in California. Anaheim Union High School Faculty and California Teachers Association oppose the bill because personal property tax repeal would remove important, vitally needed sources of revenue now used to finance schools. An estimated average 22 per cent of present school operations are presently financed through personal property taxation. Enactment of the bill would force schools to drastically slash budgets and call for special elections demanding higher school assessments against real property owners. Many districts would be forced to cancel much needed expansion and building plans. The proposition would not then reduce taxes as much as shift taxes to local sources. Experts estimate that local sales taxes would necessarily soar to 5¼ cents on each dollar of sales to cover the deficit. The teachers accordingly urge the measure's defeat in November. Excelsior Topples Newport Beach, 7-0 Newport's hopes for a successful start in 1950 were dashed by Excelsior high school when they topped Newport 7-0 Friday at Norwalk. Newport had several excellent scoring opportunities, and was twice inside the five-yard, but the Sailors were successfully held on both occasions. Promoters of the bill, furthermore, are the same five men to be named to the commission, and are all widely known for similar "gravy" propositions—two of the men having been leaders of the "Ham and Eggs" scheme, they claim. The commission, to hold absolute power for six years, would be exempt from Civil Service, and even could conduct its own gamtition, professional gambling on the results of high school and college sports, would be permitted and a conceivable delinquency problem originated. AND, despite claims, it appears unlikely that gambling receipts would not reduce taxes to any great extent. Local enforcement expense, not allowed for in the bill, would, in fact, add new taxation locally. The proposition would not then reduce taxes as much as shift taxes to local sources. Experts estimate that local sales taxes would necessarily soar to 5¼ cents on each dollar of sales to cover the deficit. The teachers accordingly urge the measure's defeat in November. Two of the worst diseases that afflict mankind have the same first letter—cancer and communism. Medical science is conquering the first; common sense should be medicine enough to eradicate the second. CHOWTIME—Boss Bob Honey takes on a load of venison and beef meat, assisted by salesman Emmet Furr, who, in some cases, was called upon by fellow employees to furnish a feed when they found out about a highly successful hunt he and John Buck of Garden Grove took last month. A couple of dozen Boney employees took advantage of Furr's sharp shooting eye at the Saturday session. Furr and Buck each brought back a deer and a bear from their mid-September excursion in the Feather River country. (Gazette photo by Bradley) Second Straight For Tustin, 13-7 Tustin remained one of Orange county's three remaining undefeated, untied teams by punching out its second win of the year over Hemet by a 13-7 score on Friday at Hemet. After three scoreless quarters, the two teams rammed into and zone three times in the final period. Bill Tatum tallied both Tustin touchdowns. Last week Tustin defeated Orange in its opener. Bownsberger Runs Hit Valencia A sub halfback—Keith Bownsberger—proved to be the difference as Bonita toppled Valencia high school Friday at Placentia by a 34-13 count. Bownsberger tallied three touchdowns, the margin of victory, as Valencia dropped its second straight game of the season. All of his scores came on runs, the distribution were present from more than 40 of the 64 counties of the state. The "State Farmer" degree, highest state award, was presented to 200 boys, including two from Anaheim high school. They were Paul A. Lenz and Robert Sieward. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Brea-Olinda Mangled by 33-0 Scoring in every quarter, Claremont high school dynamited Brea-Olinda 33-0 Friday night at Brea. It was a non-league contest. Bud Liles and Bob Howell did most of the damage to the losers, each scoring a pair of touchdowns. Howell ran 34 and 30 yards for his tallies and Liles dashed 15 yards for one and took a pass for another 39-yard scoring play. Colonist B’s (Continued from Page 2) that marker to ultimate victory for the Bs. Antole futilely tried long passes for the remainder of the time, but the Colonists shifted to a four-four-two-one defense to stymie this threat. It is difficult to single out individual standouts in the Colonist line, but certainly Tei Tanaka and Gene Winger turned in workmanlike jobs. Tanaka made nearly half of the tackles on plays run to the weak side, and recovered one Lancer fumble. Winger, playing the difficult strong-side end position, had his end turned on only one occasion—that on Antole's scoring dash. But he was immovable before and thereafter. It wouldn't be right to suggest that Sanchez had a one-track mind, but two tracks wouldn't be far wrong. Of 53 offensive plays run by the Colonists, 19 were Sanchez passes and 16 were Ball runs.
