DiMag’s Torrid Batting Pushes Yankees Closer By RALPH RODEN Associated Press Sports Writer Peerless Joe DiMaggio is playing the leading role again in the New York Yankees’ mad rush to their 17th American League pennant. DiMaggia’s booming bat has blazed the Yanks into the commanding 8½ game lead they enjoy today. Only a miracle will prevent the Yanks from winning their second straight championship. Casey Stengel’s marauders have six games left to play and need to win only four to sew up the pennant. If they win only three the runner-up Detroit Tigers would have to take all of their seven just to tie the Bombers. Three Yankee victories would eliminate the third place Boston Red Sox. Today with Luck As a matter of fact, with a little luck the Yanks can eliminate the Tigers today. All they have to do is beat Washington twice while St. Louis knocks off Detroit twice. DiMaggio has been knocking the tar out of the ball since the stretch drive began September 1. The big guy has hit safely in his last 17 games and in 21 out of 22. This terrific .391 pace has lifted DiMaggio’s season average over the .300 mark for the first time this year. During this streak DiMaggio has belted out 34 hits with half of the blows falling for extra bases—eight doubles and nine home runs. Allie Reynolds and Ed Ford, sensational rookie lefthander, were on the mound yesterday as the Yanks turned back the Washington Senators, 8-3 and 7-4. If the Phils win only three games the Dodgers would be forced to take all of their nine to tie the whiz kids: Keith Heintzelman, making his first start since July 30, pitched the Phils to a 12-4 victory in the opener. Konstanty Ties Mark The Braves took the nightcap, 5-3, to spoil Jim Konstanty’s record-tying 70th relief appearance. The Braves snapped a 3-3 tie in the eighth with a two run rally. Konstanty, in making his 70th relief job, tied Ace Adams of the Giants for most games pitched in a single season. Allie Reynolds and Ed Ford, sensational rookie lefthander, were on the mound yesterday as the Yanks turned back the Washington Senators, 8-3 and 7-4. DiMaggi Big Gun Reynolds scattered nine hits to hang up his 15th victory in the opener and Ford granted only seven in bagging his ninth without a setback in the finale. DiMaggio was the big gun in both games. He drove out three of the Yank's 15 hits in Reynold's triumph. In the nightcap DiMaggio poled a three-run double to ignite a six run third inning rally. The Red Sox kept their faint hopes alive by sweeping a doubleheader from the hopeless Philadelphia Athletics, 8-0 and 3-0, in the only other American league activity. Mel Parnell blanked the A's on three hits in the opener to post his 18th victory. Harry Taylor, recently purchased from the Brooklyn organization, shut-out the Athletics on two safeties in the finale. Phils Closer The Philadelphia Phillies made some hay in their National league pennant drive. The Phils divided a doubleheader with the Braves in Boston while the runner - up Brooklyn Dodgers split a day-night twin bill with the New York Giants to remain five games back. Philadelphia now needs to win only four of its remaining seven games to clinch its first pennant. Gene Tunney, the only retired, undefeated heavyweight champion to stay retired, was among those on the Louis bandwagon. “Joe will knock him out in five rounds,” said Tunney. Still Powerful “If Jack Dempsey is not the greatest fighter who ever lived, then Joe Louis is,” said Tunney. “There is no reason to think, because Louis is 36, that he has not retained the skill and power that he had when he retired.” Tunny and the others who predict a Louis victory, believe Joe is going to catch Ezzard at least once, and that will be enough. A fighter’s punch is the last thing he loses, and the bomber, even at 36, hasn’t shown any signs of weakness in the power department yet. Ezzard Under-Rated The Charles backers, headed by fight manager Vic Marsillo, wail that Ezzard is the most under-rated heavyweight challenger since Tunney, himself, first stepped into the ring against Dempsey. Marsillo, a canny judge of boxing styles, not only believes that the 29-year old Cincinnati negro will win, but that Charles will knock Louis out. “I like the well-oiled machine against one that hasn’t been used for a time,” said Marsillo. “Sure Louis can punch, but he's going to have to catch Charles first. What do you think Charles is going to do? Wait to get tagged? Unless he freezes, and I don't think he will, he's going to stick Joe and get out of there. He'll keep on doing that until Joe's legs give out. Then he'll chop him up.” Good and Bad Charles has looked fast and sharp all the way. Louis, on the other hand, has been alternately “terrible” and “very good.” His last three workouts have been on the sensational side, however. The bomber has been getting in those feared combination punches which have sent 52 of his 61 opponents to dreamland. The bookmakers still have Louis the favorite at 1 to 2. Promoting Doesn't Make for Slumber NEW YORK (AP) — Worrying about the weather for outdoor shows, is the most annoying thing for a fight promoter says Harry Markson, managing director of the International Boxing club. The IBC is promoting Wednesday's Joe Louis-Ezzard Charles fight. "Do you know what you do when you are a promoter?" asked Markson. "You sleep with your hand outside the window." "ORANGE COUNTY'S LOW COST TRANSPORTATION HEADQUARTERS" 410 S.LOS ANGELES ST., AMAHEIM, PHONE 2297 Whittier Invades AUHS Field To Test Colonist C Gridders Colonist backers were scheduled to get a preview of things to come this afternoon. Maybe not for this season, but for perhaps two or three years hence. The C's were scheduled to make their first appearance of the year, engaging the Whittier C's in a combination scrimmage-game at 3 on the AUHS practice field. The regular C schedule will open on Oct. 5 at Laguna Beach. Coach Dick Glover yesterday named the following lineup to start against Whittier today: LE—Rubario, LT—Vara, LG—Van Dyke, C—Frank, RG—Starnes, RT—Mattox, RE—Rios, QB—Salaets, LH—Jenkins, RH—Sanchez, FB—Rivera. Over on the other side of the practice field, Clare Van Hoore-beke continued to make it contact work for the varsity gridders and Sam Keith also scrimmaged the B's. Both teams either looked mighty powerful on offense or else just out-and-out putrid on defense. Playing against their own teammates, it's hard to tell which is the case. Regardless, it will be known in three days—that's Bell Gardens. BEYERLINES by Ernie Beyer To quote from the original: Sports editor Paul Zimmerman of the Los Angeles Times in explaining why Philadelphia’s Municipal stadium is used only a few times each year for football: “...and the playing field is even farther away from the top rows and the end zones than it is at our Coliseum.” Do tell. This has raised another question however. Doesn't moving the end zones away from the playing field make it a lot tougher to score? Bickford and Sain each 19. 'I know several of Brown's players,' said Fritsch, 'and they tell me that he even bawls out his captain when the latter loses the toss before the game!' Bob Ajemain in the Sporting News: "Boston's Big Three, Vern Bickford, Johnny Sain, and Warren Spahn, are knocking again. Season Enters Final Fortnight By JIM HUBBART Associated Press Sportswriter Not much longer, now, men. Two more weeks and they'll quit playing baseball in the Pacific Coast League. As the 1950 season approaches the wire, there's little reason to doubt that the final standings will look much different from the way they do today—Oakland, San Diego, Hollywood and Seattle, in that order. Late Scurry The clubs are involved in that usual last minute scurry to get their affairs in order before the players go home for some needed rest. The farm hands are being called up; the schedules are loaded with make-up games; the major leagues are sounding recall. The Athletics have called Tod Davis up from Seattle; Dino Restelli leaves San Francisco for Pittsburgh; the Yankees get Fenston Mole from Portland; Ernie Bickhaus goes from Seattle to the St. Louis Browns. 11 To Go Yet Another double header was rained out at Portland last night, so the Beavers and the Los Angeles Angels have another on tap tonight. They're slated for an-11 game series this week, somehow. The Angels also were washed out Sunday at Seattle. That will be made up in Los Angeles during the final week of the season. The series of the week finds the second place San Diego Padres opening tonight at Oakland. The Padres, who trail the Oaks by eight lengths, still have a mathematical chance of copping the pennant, if you believe in miracles. The No. 2 attraction centers...
