Salvation Army Slates Long Beach Hobby Show
Hundreds of rare and antique articles will be on display along with valuable private collections of unusual items at the Salvation Army Hobby Show and Open house on Friday, September 29.
Local residents are being invited to attend the family event, which is slated from 2 until 8:30 p.m., at the Salvation Army social service center, 1370 Alamitos ave., Long Beach. Brig Fred Ohrn, center manager, is heading the arrangements committee for the affair, which is free of charge.
Refreshments will be served free during the afternoon, and entertainment is scheduled for the evening. Displays by the Walsworth Puppet exhibit and showing of several valuable dogs is planned.
Brig. Ohrn said today that the Show and Open house is designed as a "thank you" to the public for the cooperation given the Salvation Army social service center during the past year.
Donations of castoff articles by Anaheim residents who telephone 4631 to request a Red Shield truck to stop by their homes and offices makes possible the operation of the Army's self-help program, he said.

Mike DeMeneces, Anaheim food merchandiser, last week joined forces with the newly-formed frozen food division of Libby, McNeil and Libby. DeMeneces will serve as Orange county representative for the concern.
The affiliation with Libby, McNeil and Libby terminates a two and one-half year association with Venus Foods for DeMeneces. He served as Long Beach representative for Venus.
The L. M. & L. frozen food venture represents the first entry of a major canning company in that field, according to the Anaheim food man.

Director Clears Old Age Pension Payment Mix-Up
Charles I. Schottland, director, State Department of Social Welfare, announced today that there had been a misunderstanding about the increased Old Age and Survivors' Insurance payments not being deductible from the public assistance payments made to individuals who are receiving both OASI and Old Age Aid.
He stated that the Bureau of Old Age and Survivors' Insurance had recently sent out a notice saying that the Social Security benefit checks to be received early in October would be in large amounts. The notice also pointed out that persons under 75 years of age may have as much as $50 a month income and receive Old Age and Survivors' Insurance; also a person 75 years of age may now earn any amount and continue to receive Old Age and Survivors' Insurance benefits.
Schottland said this was true for those receiving payments from the Federal Old Age and Survivors' Insurance, however in those instances where the individual also receives aid under any of the California laws it is necessary that they report such income to the county welfare departments.
It should be kept in mind that the amount paid for Old Age Security or Aid to Needy Children is paid upon the need of the individual and the amount of income he receives, therefore it follows that if any person has increased income from any source he must notify his county welfare department immediately.
