Robinson’s ‘Bonehead’ Play
Almost Finishes Detroit
By RALPH RODEN
Associated Press Sports Writer
The 1950 American League pennant race is just about over but it will be remembered as long as baseball is played as the year that catcher Aaron Robinson pulled one of the most colossal “boners” in history.
Robinson’s blunder gave the Cleveland Indians a 2-1 teninning victory over Detroit yesterday and practically erased the Tigers’ pennant hopes.
The defeat dropped the second place Tigers 2½ games behind the New York Yankees, who virtually knocked third place Boston out of contention by trouncing the Red Sox, 9-5.
Yanks Need Six
New York needs only six victories out of its remaining eight games to clinch its second straight championship. If the Yanks win only four games the Tigers will have to win all of their seven to beat out the bombers.
Robinson’s “rock” came in one of the strangest games ever played. At game time in Cleveland it was so dark because of dust and smoke that the lights were turned on.
The astounding play occurred as follows:
Bob Lemon tripled to start the Cleveland tenth. Tiger manager Red Rolfe ordered Ted Gray intentionally to walk the next two batters to set up a force play at every base.
DP Grounder
Larry Doby then popped to first baseman Don Kolloway. Luke

Larry Doby then popped to first baseman Don Kolloway. Luke Easter followed with a grounder to Kolloway. Kolloway stepped on first to retire Easter and pegged to Robinson.
Robinson grabbed the throw and stomped on the plate while Lemon was starting his slide about eight to 10 feet away.
Umpire Bill Summers thumbed Lemon out, but the pitcher slid across the plate. Robinson, apparently thinking he still had a force play, made no attempt to tag Lemon. The Cleveland bench dashed at Summers and brought first base umpire Charley Berry along. When it was pointed out to Summers that Lemon had to be tagged in order to be declared out, Summers reversed his decision and called Lemon safe.
Lemon the Works
Lemon was the whole works. He stopped the Tigers on five hits to gain his 22nd victory and scored both runs. Lemon socked his sixth homer in the fourth to drive in the first run of the game. Johnny Lipton tied it up in the

Two home runs by Ted Williams and another by Bobby Doerr accounted for half of the Red Sox hits. Raschi was in trouble in the Seventh when the Red Sox had a run home and the bases loaded with one out. Raschi parried the threat by getting Vern Stephens to fly out and Walt Dropo to ground out.
In remaining American League games the Washington Senators tripped the Philadelphia Athletics, 3-1, and the St. Louis Browns dumped the Chicago White Sox twice, 5-0 and 6-1.
Phils Humbled
The Philadelphia Phillies lost ground in the National League race as they suffered a humiliating 11-0 defeat at the hands of the second place Brooklyn Dodgers. The Dodgers now trail by five games.
Erv Palica, young righthander, tamed the Phils on two hits and featured a game winning six run rally in the fifth inning with a grand slam homer. Palica held the Phils hitless until the eighth when Andy Seminick singled. Del Ennis doubled in the ninth for the Phils' final hit.
Three-run homers by Hank Thompson and Don Mueller paced the New York Giants to a 12-4 victory over the Boston Braves. Jim Hearn was the winner and 19 game winner Vern Bickford the loser.
In other National League games the Chicago Cubs trounced the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-2, and the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates divided a doubleheader. The Reds won the opener, 7-1, behind Ewell Blackwell and the Pirates the nightcap, 3-2.
Coach Frank Leahy, three syllables, predicts these perhaps four games this season, number 125 from an Irish are the best in the country.
Just who is correct may known by sundown Saturday. The South Bend team, unbeaten in games during the past four years opens its season against Nor Carolina, the Dixie Dynamite who gave Notre Dame such a tie last fall. NC won from North Carolina State Saturday, 13 to 7.
Blaik Jr. Debuts
Numerous other big time teams will be making their starts this weekend. Michigan, Army, Oklahoma and Southern California are among them.
Michigan, voted the most likely to succeed in the Big Ten, ties it to Michigan State, youngest member of the Western conference and already a 38 to 13 victor over Oregon State. Army, which has a modest unbeaten string of 22 itself, introduces Robert Blaik as the No. quarterback of Papa Earl Blaik machine at Colgate's expense.
Leon Heath, fullback, will have ten new starting mates as Oklahoma home protects its all-winning streak of 21 games over two seasons against the Boston College Eagles at Norman. The Eagles were tied, 7 to 7, by Wake Forest Friday night.
Southern California, bracketed with Stanford and California at the best in the Pacific Coast conference, takes on Iowa in a Friday night game. Neither has started this year and the game marks the debut of Leonard Raffensberger as coach of the Hawkeyes.
No Big Ten Titls
Although the World Series still is a thing of the future, many of the teams will be getting busy once in conference brawlings. Only the Big Ten confines itself with non-conference affairs.
Brown, opening up under Gu Zitrides, moves over to the Yale Bowl, where Coach Herman Hickman's youth program registered for 25 to 0 victory over Connecticut. In other eastern frays, Virginia appears at Philadelphia, Hobart is the guest of Columbia, William visits Princeton, and Lafayette bangs into Cornell.

There will be numerous conference battles on tap in Dixie. Auburn, spilled by Wofford, visits Vanderbilt, which won from Middle Tennessee, 47 to 0. Alabama is at Tulane and Tennessee has it out with Mississippi State. Kentuckl, whose Bill Leskovar set up both touchdowns against Louisiana State, again is booked in a night game. This time Mississippi is the opposing team. The Wildcats blanked LSU, 14 to 0.
Plenty Action
Richmond and Wake Forest are opponents in the southern conference as are Virginia Military and George Washington, West Virginia and Washington & Lee.
Even though there aren't title games on tap in the middlewest, there will be plenty of action. Iowa State, which whipped Colorado on two final period touchdowns, 14 to 7, is at Northwestern; Indiana meets Nebraska; Marquette comes to Wisconsin; and Ohio State takes on the heavy burden of trying to stop Kyle Rote and his Southern Methodist chums, SMU, with Rote going 75 yards for one of his two touchdowns, mastered Georgia Tech, 33 to 13.
Missouri takes on Clemson, 55 to 0 victor over Presbyterian, while Kansas State, loser to Washington by 33 to 7, goes to Colorado.
Santa Clara is at Rice, Purdue at Texas and Texas Tech at Texas A & M are southwestern features.
Beavers Open 11-Game Series In Drive for First Division
By JIM HUBBART
Associated Press Sports Writer
With only two weeks left to play, the Portland Beavers open an 11 game home stand against Los Angeles tonight in an effort to grab a berth in the Pacific Coast league first division.
The issue, however, may depend on the weather man. He rained out two of yesterday's double headers, and the Pacific Northwest's wet season opens on schedule, the series may never go 11 games.
The Beavers, tied in fifth place with San Francisco, are two games behind the fourth place Seattle Rainiers. They'll open the series, elongated by previous rainy spells with a double header.
Two Rained Out
It rained Sunday in Portland, causing postponement of a pair with San Francisco. The Angels were washed out, too, at Seattle.
Further south, though, the pace setting Oakland Acorns split a twin bill with lowly Sacramento and the San Diego Padres trimmed Hollywood twice, 6 to 1 and 9 to 4. The Stars now are officially out as pennant contenders.
Two uncarned runs in the second inning provided the margin for Oakland's 4 to 2 triumph in the opener. Sacramento scored both its runs in a brief ninth inning uprising. The Solons took the nightcap, 6 to 2. They sewed it up in a four run fifth, with two walks, three scratch singles and an error doing the damage.

Hornets Waylay Vallejo JC 57-6
Quarterback Chuck Holloway took the opening kickoff and raced 80 yards for a touchdown, and Fullerton could have quit then. Instead the Hornets continued to dish out more of the same as they walloped Vallejo Jaysee 57-6 Friday night at Fullerton.
The Hornets quickly built up a 26-0 lead and then let the regulars sit out the rest of the evening. The reserves, however, continued to pour it on.
Statistics also show how completely Fullerton dominated the tussle. They racked up almost 400 yards—most of it on the ground—while holding Vallejo to slightly more than 100. And first downs stood at 16-4.

Pittsburgh Next Stop for Team Of Branch, Burt?
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Burt Shotton says he isn't going to retire from baseball yet which strengthens the rumor that Branch Rickie will become general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates after he sells his Brooklyn Dodger stock.
That may sound a mite confusing. What has Shotton's future plans to do with Rickey going to the Pirates? That's easy to answer. The two have been the Damon and Pythias of baseball. Where Rickey goes, Shotton is sure to follow. Thus, if Shotton is remaining in baseball, it's dollars to doughnuts, he's going to work for Brother Rickey.
Not In Brooklyn
The 66-year-old Shotton may have just been in a good mood after his Dodgers smacked down
Eagle Victory Over Cardinals Shows They Still Have Plenty
NEW YORK—(AP)—Greasy Neal can rest easy; there's plenty of pep left in his Philadelphia Eagles.
They proved it yesterday—even without their ace backs, Steve Van Buren and Bosh Pritchard—with a 45 to 7 romp over the highly regarded Chicago Cardinals, of the National Football League.
Van Buren, pro football's greatest ground gainer, returned to action but was sidelined in the opening quarter with a torn rib cartilage. Pritchard still is out with an injured knee, originally hurt last year and aggravated in all-star game this year.
The alert Philadelphians, however, converted three intercepted passes and two fumbles into touchdowns, spoiling the Cards' home debut before 24,914 fans.
Chicago quarterback Jim Hardy had eight passes intercepted, one shy of the record. The Eagles, who were humiliated by the Cleveland Browns last week, 35 to 10, opened up a 31 to 0 halftime score, then coasted home.
Those mighty midwestern maulers—the Chicago Bears—made it two straight, lashing the San Francisco 49ers, 32 to 20. The Chicagoans, trailing by two points at half-time, rallied behind Johnny Lujack and scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to sew up the victory. George Blanda kicked three field goals for the Bears.
Green Bay's Packers came up with the afternoon's big upset—a 35 to 21 decision over the Washington Redskins. The Packers' pass defense, which at times resembles a sieve, rallied to the cause and stopped Sammy Baugh ice cold in the second half with only two runs.
Vikings Humble Santa Ana, 20-7
There has to be a first time for just about everything.
The Santa Ana Dons found that out when a strong Long Beach city college team dumped them 20-7 on Saturday night. It marked the first victory in history for the Vikings in the series between the two clubs.
The game was the dedicatory one for the new Long Beach municipal stadium.
The fancy running of quarterback Dewey Tomkins salted away the victory for the Vikes. He ran for two of the touchdowns on gallops of 16 and 58 yards. The Dons' lone score came on a 16-yard pass.

The new Branch?
The league leading Phillies yesterday but he said in no uncertain tone 'I'll be in baseball next year: I don't know where, but I have a baseball job.'
Well, it's almost a cinch that the gray haired manager of the dodgers isn't going to remain in Brooklyn after Rickey leaves. The Brooklyn board of directors is most certain to clean house and hurt, if he doesn't resign first, expected to be swept out.
To Pittsburgh?
That's where the two and two takes four thinking comes in. Shotton is through in Brooklyn and he's going to remain in baseball, where will he go? The answer: with Rickey to Pittsburgh course. Burt came out of reelection four seasons ago only to help out "my good friend, Branch Rickey."
"I'll stay in baseball as long Branch needs me," he has said many times.
Then the only thing to believe from past statements and history is that Shotton is remaining in baseball because Rickey still needs him.
Buys Out Stock
This whole chain of events start Saturday with the disclosure New York by William Zeckenoff, wealthy real estate executive, that he is going to purchase Rickey's 25 per cent stock interest in the Brooklyn baseball club. Zeckendorf said the entire transition had been engineered through the cooperation of John Galbreath, owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The immediate assumption was that Galbreath was helping Rickey of Brooklyn and into Pittsburgh where he would be called on to build a winner with the best place Pirates. Rickey is recruited as a genius at taking second division ball clubs and shrewdly turning them into profit making cisco 49ers, 32 to 20.
The Packers' pass defense, which at times resembles a sieve, rallied to the cause and stopped Sammy Baugh ice cold in the second half with only two completions.
Doak Walker, golden boy of the Detroit Lions, capped a brilliant performance with a 20-yard field goal in the last three minutes to give the Detroiters a 10 to 7 triumph over Pittsburgh's steelers. Walker, of SMU fame, scored the Lions' touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Bobby Layne. He then kicked the extra point, thus accounting for all of Detroit's scoring.
Cleveland, as expected, had little trouble with the Baltimore Colts. The Browns displayed their all-around power for 17 points in the first quarter, then breezed to a 31 to 0 victory. Otto Graham again sparkled for Cleveland, flipping seven straight complete passes before missing. He wound up with 11 for 23.
