ANAHEIM GAZETTE
by JOHN S. NEUBAUER
ANAHEIM MATTERS — GEN E. McCloud, the ANAHEIMER, is chairman of the Orange County Central Committee that is beginning to push GOP candidates for election in November ... A. J. Schalte is the chairman of the GOP ANAHEIM division ... while the son of the former supervisor, LeRoy Lyons, Jr., and John Harpster are his righthand men ... With 45,000 registered Republicans in the county, the GOP forces are soliciting the active participation of all in this fall's campaign ... John Phillips, Member of Congress, Clyde Wilson, State Senator, and Sam L. Collins, assemblyman, will offer ANAHEIM Republicans all the advice they need ... Hilmer Lodge, the gentleman farmer from Yorba Linda and Mount San Antonio professor, is a vital cog in the county GOP setup. His wife, Dorothy Thompson Lodge is one of the better known lady lawyers. Her brother, Judge Raymond Thompson, is a collector of ancient automobiles. He has an old Locomobile, Stanley Steamer and a Maxwell to drive for pleasure ... The Judge's brother-in-law, Harold Lang, is well known throughout the ANAHEIM citrus belt as he has spent a lifetime in the pest-control business ... The GAZETTEER has mentioned all the prominent Republicans in this paragraph except Joe Lieb, Jr., and
Stock Market
NEW YORK (A)—Stock prices surged ahead over a broad front in today's market.
Gains running to more than $1 a share carried the general price level to around the highest in more than four years.
Demand first appeared in the railroad group but eventually spread to most other major divisions.
Many issues responded easily to relatively small buying orders. Trading got off to a slow start but picked up a little speed as the market got under way. Turnover, however, reached a rate of only 1,600,00 shares or so for the run session.
The advance followed a two-day decline which was accented yesterday by a sharp decline in American Telephone stock which in turn unsettled the rest of the market. Heavy selling hit A. T. & T. Wednesday after news of a proposed financing program or huge scope.
A. T. & T. lost a little more than $1 a share early today but ranged for a small net gain.
Nickel Plate Railway, an issue noted for frequent wide price swings, jumped $4.50 a share to $142.50 at one time.

Dorothy Thompson Lodge is one of the better known lady lawyers. Her brother, Judge Raymond Thompson, is a collector of ancient automobiles. He has an old Locomobile, Stanley Steamer and a Maxwell to drive for pleasure. The Judge's brother-in-law, Harold Lang, is well known throughout the ANAHEIM citrus belt as he has spent a lifetime in the pest-control business. The GAZETEER has mentioned all the prominent Republicans in this paragraph except Joe Lieb, Jr., and Gov. Louden who once ran for Congress on the ticket.
PROFILES — Harriet Schadewald, ANAHEIM elementary schools music director, is performing an outstanding job in teaching ANAHEIM youth the beauty and importance of music. She is doing more than merely teaching. She is instilling the appreciation of music, so that young ANAHEIMERS may grow up with a better understanding of beauty and culture.
ANAHEIMITEMS—E. W. Sims is the personable gateman at the Kwickset Lock Co. . Lloyd Burrows is studying electronics and radio at Cal Poly this fall. Gus Spirea is the genial ANAHEIMER who handles the landscaping of the elementary schools. Gus may not have a green thumb, but he can make plants and shrubs behave. Nobody will deny that Marie Wilson is one of the most successful ANAHEIMERS. The stage, screen and radio actress is now the inspiration shall we say, for a comic strip. ANAHEIMAIDS will have another Queen Contest. Helen Wier, Miss ANAHEIM, should make the contest add to her popularity.
Ernest T. Specht, the Bell sportsman who annually displays his giant golden palomino, King Cortez, at the Hallowe'en parade, will be the Grand Marshall of Fullerton's Fifth Annual Fall Festival October 5. Don Whitehead, the AP correspondent covering the Korean war, hails from the Covina-Azusa area and got his start writing sports for the Argus 18 years ago. He came to ANAHEIM frequently in the interest of sports copy... Lee Kavanagh would like to know what became of 'Stinky' Anderson with whom he played marbles when a kid growing up in ANAHEIM ... Edward Percy Benner, the ANAHEIM sheetmetal man, was quite a softball pitcher in his day. So was Silent Albertus Collman, the ANAHEIMER whose nonchalance got the better of the batters.
BOOSTER—Alvin Lee, publicity chairman of the Hallowe'en Festival and ANAHEIM community fair, is working hard promoting the civic attractions. At the same time he is also boosting ANAHEIM and creating goodwill and civic pride among ANAHEIMERS. AI is head man at the Orange County News in his spare time.
CIVIC PRIDE—Only one of the numerous flower beds in the center of Mills Drive is being cared for. That particular bed receives the attention of Mrs. Lester T. Mickey and her daughter while the others are brown, barren, uninviting wastes. It is particularly encouraging that ANAHEIMERS have such civic pride to tend a flower pot and make otherwise unattractive ground a real beauty spot. The city tathers might consider landscaping the other plots in Mills Drive, just as the City of Santa Ana has taken over Flower Street in the County Seat.
Ora Mae Merritt is now working for the outfall sewer district headquarters. During the war this ANAHEIM girl was with an American embassy in Sydney, Australia, but quit to join the Red Cross and work in hot, desolate Arabia for two long years. She'll tell you that there may be romantic sounding far off places, but there is only one ANAHEIM the wide world over... Dick Gay would like to match golf clubs with a few ANAHEIMERS to stir up more interest in local golfing.

DUKE COMES HOME
GLENDALE (E) — Duke, the perambulating dog, is back home, 30 days and 11,000 miles after he left his master, Pilot Byron O'Hara.
Duke was supposed to have come home from San Francisco at that time but was mistakenly put aboard an orient-bound plane. He was intercepted at Guam and returned.
