Gazette retoucher confesses to some shenanigans on that score. But about the fish itself, no. That's a real California Black Sea Bass Dana Knowlton is displaying and it is tipping the scales, which have been artfully erased, at a whopping 450 pounds. The monster was caught last week off the Guadalupe Islands by Knowlton who was one member of a party which spent a week aboard the craft "Polaris" searching the seas for the big game fish. The anglers, among whom were several Anaheimers, had good luck. They brought back nine other black sea bass ranging in weight from 150 to 335 pounds apiece. They also boated better than 200 other types including albacore, dolphin and yellowtail. The party included Tom Yellis, Anaheim; Sid Hammond, Anaheim; Dr. Charles Irvin, Jr., Redlands; A. E. Arnold, Anaheim; Dr. R. L. Griffith, Fullerton; Dr. Perry Davis and his son, Jimmy, Santa Ana; Dr. Charles Irvin, Sr., Anaheim, and Louis Reinking, Orange. The seafarers plan to saip for La Paz next March to try their skill. State Chamber of Commerce Reports High Business Levels, Job Rise High business activity levels and a sharp employment rise to record heights are highlights of current state conditions. Neil Petree, Los Angeles first vice-president of the California State Chamber of Commerce, stated in a report to State Chamber directors on California economic conditions. The residential building boom continues unabated, agricultural prospects have been increasingly good since June, and there have been advances in many wholesale and retail prices since the Korean campaign started, he added. “California business activity, rising steadily since February, showed a sharp upsurge in July, following outbreak of Korean hostilities, and continued at high levels through August,” Petree reported. “Rush to buy in anticipation of shortages or price increases subsided during August, but durable goods sales volume was very large all summer. “July's scare buying caused a fantastic jump in retail sales volume. July department store sales were 39 per cent above July, 1949, over the same months last year. Heaviest building relative to population has been in Los Angeles, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, where former housing shortages are largely eliminated. “Since early June, agriculture prospects have been increasingly good. Farm produce prices have risen mostly well above 1949 prices. Orange, lemon and summer lettuce prices dropped abruptly in early summer, and generally remained far below 1949 prices. Gospel Quartet In Anaheim Tonight Anaheimers who have enjoyed hearing the Weatherford Stamp Quartet Gospel singers each night over station KGER will have the opportunity to see the group in action tonight at the Bethel Baptist church, Broadway and Lemon. The four will stage a program of gospel songs beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. No reservations are necessary, according to chairman H. R. Fox. Many devotees of the quartet TRANSITION—The stork didn’t do very much business with ANAHEIMERS last week. ANAHEIM’s birth rate actually was less than the death rate... The Rudolph Gonzaleses have a new daughter... Tony Ersua is the proud papa of another little sweetheart... Jess Hurdado has a little girl... Three little girls... As it must to all people, death came to Mrs. Kate R. Spottswood, 81, an employee of the ANAHEIM public library since 1926... An ANAHEIMER for two years, M. B. Reed, 52, died at his home following a long illness... Joan Louise Plescer, 12, died Saturday morning a two month’s illness. She was a member of the ANAHEIM Bethel Baptist church... Tragedy marked the passing of Henry Hetebrink, 78, and his wife, Daisy, 56, who were found Friday morning in the grove of W. F. Coulter apparently victims of what police termed a “murder-suicide paet.” The bodies were discovered by P. A. Myers and C. R. Myers, sprayers... MISCELLANY — Francis L. Forsberg and Elton Patterson, ANAHEIMERS, were fined $10 each for trespassing on Murphy Ranch property where they had gone to hunt doves. Constable Ralph Jenkins, is tough on trespassers in the Fullerton hills that are posted... An eager-beaver-home builder has been taking construction material — electrical, plumbing and other items — from various northern Orange county construction jobs for the past 14 months. Last week he lifted $54 worth of plastering material from J. C. Gulles of Buena Park... REMEMBER — Absence may make the heart grow fonder, but presents get the gal. rising steadily since February, showed a sharp upsurge in July, following outbreak of Korean hostilities, and continued at high levels through August." Petree reported. "Rush to buy in anticipation of shortages or price increases subsided during August, but durable goods sales volume was very large all summer. "July's scare buying caused a fantastic jump in retail sales volume. July department store sales were 39 per cent above July, 1949, while May and June sales were about two per cent above the corresponding 1949 months. Buying hysteria, plus record-breaking demands for automobiles, radios, home appliances, building materials and other durable goods caused price rises at both wholesale and retail levels. The wholesale index jumped five per cent above pre-Korean outbreak figures and eight per cent over a year ago. "Retail prices showed a sharp food cost rise. While the wholesale price rise tapered off in mid-August, metal and wool prices have recently risen further. "Civilian employment rose to 4,156,000 in July—2.8 per cent over 1949 levels—continuing toward an anticipated September seasonal peak of nearly 4,300,000. "There are indications that manufacturing employment rose to over 810,000 last month. Durable goods industries employment rose to 424,500 in July—the highest for any month since September, 1945. Iron steel, machinery, aircraft and automobile assembly industries showed large increases. Aircraft plans have added over 12,000 workers since June, and this industry seeks to meet such skilled manpower scarcities as engineers, toolers, machinists and assemblers. "The residential building boom continues unabated. In July, value of permits issued was 87 per cent over July, 1949, while May and June values averaged 71 per cent..." LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Your Plaid Is Showing The country has gone plumb plaid. Clan plaids zoom into favor this Fall in attire for every member of the family. Authentic plaids, some in miniature, some enlarged to bold proportions, are featured in woolens or rayons. Look for plaid in surprise items like smoking jackets for women as well as men, French purses, gloves, belts and even shoes. Try mating plaids with deep dusky colors. If you sew your own, how about a plaid lining for a coat? If you're a handkerchief dropper, consider a plaid one, it attracts more attention.
