Church of Christ Tops Grace Lutheran To Even Score in Church Loop Playoff
One thing that can't truthfully be said about the current Church league playoff that it is a mismatch.
Church of Christ evened the series at one-each last night with a 1-0 win over Grace Lutheran in an exact reversal of Monday night's opener. The decider will be played tomorrow night at 8 in City Park.
But for a cheap handle hit by center fielder Ed Baker in the fourth inning, the teams might yet be playing. Baker, after two were out in the fourth, blooped a short fly into right field which fell among a host of pursuers in that vicinity.
Finding the guardians of the keystone chasing the errant hit, Baker continued his trek around the bases. Third base, he discovered was also unoccupied, so he went thataway. By this time, the ball had been recovered and was fired toward third base.
As has been related, no one was there to represent Grace Lutheran, so the ball continued off the playing field and Baker strolled home with the game's only tally.
The run came off the hurling of Art Altheide who had blanked Church of Christ on Monday night. Altheide had come in to relieve starter Harold Stief in the third inning. It was the only hit he allowed in the three and one-third innings that he pitched.
Grace Lutheran, meanwhile, punched out five hits off Lloyd Lichtenwalter, and had runners on base in five of the seven innings. Lichtenwalter, however, was stingy in the clutch and the Lut

Lichtenwalter fanned eight last night, Stief none, and Altheide five.

Hoagy Sparkles In Troy Drills
LOS ANGELES (B) — Football coach Jeff Cravath let the University of Southern California football players ease back a little today after watching them scrimmage for an hour and 20 minutes yesterday.
In Troy's first big heavy duty workout, halfback Al Carmichael ran for three touchdowns, working in a first string backfield that included Wilbur Robertson, Ralph Pucci and Dan Schneider.
Detroit Regains Shaky AL Lead; Phils Triumph
BY RALPH RODEN
Associated Press Sportswriter
With big Luke Easter as the ringleader, the smarting Cleveland Indians are moving back into the American League pennant race in the role of "spoilers."
Knocked out of contention and blasted by their bosses, the Indians are out to redeem themselves at the expense of the three remaining contenders — Boston, New York and Detroit.
They began to reap revenge last night by defeating the New York Yankees, 8-7, on a three-run homer by Easter in the ninth inning.
The defeat sent the Yankees into second place, a half game back of the Detroit Tigers who scored a 3-2 afternoon triumph over the Washington Senators.
Boston Wins
Cleveland has one more game with the Yanks, six with the Tigers and two with the third place Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox, still moving relentlessly forward, climbed within a game of the lead by edging the Chicago White Sox, 2-1.
The St. Louis Browns, behind the three-hit pitching of Al Widmar, blanked the Philadelphia Athletics, 6-0.
In the National League the Philadelphia Phillies moved a step closer towards the pennant by nosing out the St. Louis Cardinals, 1-0, behind the five-hit pitching of Robin Roberts, who attained his 19th victory. The Cards' Max Lanier and Al Brazle surrendered only three hits but one was a fifth inning homer by Andy Seminick who celebrated his 30th birthday.
Blackie Errs
The victory kept the Phils 6½ games ahead of the runner-up Brooklyn Dodgers who collected only one hit in beating the Ewell Blackwell and the Cincinnati Reds, 3-1.

CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. (RP) — There are rumors going around the federalized 28th Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard that Pfc. Curt Simmons will be released to pitch in the World Series if the Philadelphia Phillies win the National League pennant.
The ace lefthander, who has a season's record of 17-8, pitched his last game against Brooklyn last Thursday night.
Exit Seattle, Enter Seals in PCL Top Division
By the Associated Press
There's news in the Pacific Coast league today: San Francisco's in the first division and Seattle isn't.
The Seals traded their fifth spot for Seattle's fourth place by beating Seattle 6-2 last night. Only half a game separates them, but those precious percentage points belong to San Francisco today. Seattle had'em yesterday.
Los Fleming's double with the bases loaded in the third inning was the blow from which Seattle didn't recover. The Seals scored five times on six hits in that inning. Seattle got only two runs out of five hits and an error in the third. Opposing pitchers Jim Wilson of Seattle and Chef Johnson each allowed 12 hits.
League-leading Oakland lost to San Diego 6-3, leaving the Padres five games behind; Jack Graham hit two homers and Harry Simpson smacked his 31st to pace the attack. Pinch hitter Mel Dugabou homered with a man aboard for Oakland.
Third-place Hollywood nipped Sacramento 2-0 as Ken Lehman pitched himself out of a basesloaded jam in the first inning, then blanked the Solons. He and Sacramento's Bill Evans each allowed seven hits. Frank Kelleher hit his 29th homer in the ninth Hollywood's other run came in the seventh when Jim Baxes walked up and moved up and moved up.

The line met the backfield yesterday and it's OK to say it at tone of voice, too, because one certainly appeared to complete stranger to the other.
The happy occasion was a dummy scrimmage by theers at the invitation of Head Coach Clare Van Hoore-The reason for the shindig, according to him, was to sharpen up both pass offense and defense at the same time.
What was proved was that the Colonists either have a rather impotent offensive line or else a real rock-'em, sock-'em defensive crew. The passers, poor fellows, never really had a chance.
Some Click
Now, don't misunderstand. They completed some. They hit the quick pitches about five yards down the middle and all of the flat passes seemed to be going all right. This comes, though, previous to any intensive drills in the art of defending against the forward pass.
One great advantage enjoyed by the defense, however, was the knowledge that a pass was coming up on every play. Once during the drill a running play was called up the center, and the ball carrier was easily in the secondary by the time the eager defenders were just about ready to pounce upon the "passer."
No Injuries
Van Hoorcheke, who has yet to be hit with a serious injury in practice, defied no fates yesterday as he continued to lay off the rough stuff for the backs. During the drills the linemen were encouraged to mix it freely, but it was no more than tagging for the backs and pass receivers.
They did figure in something a bit more strenuous, however, during a brisk tackling drill when the entire squad passed through both phases of the head-bumping exercise.
Nothing spectacular to report in this instance, since it consisted of easy side shots at a loping man running straight up and down and in a direct forward line.

Lionettes Topple Buena Park,
But Lynx Win Title on Forfeit
By that round about method which has come to be known as the back door, the Buena Park Lynx won the championship of the Southern California league from the Orange Lionettes.
Just to prove that it might be a iluke, however, the Lionettes wound up the Lynx season on a sour note last night as they trounced them 6-4 at Fullerton.
The Lynx already had the title before the game, it being awarded to them off their protest of Orange's victory in Friday night's second playoff game. The Lionettes won that one, too, but used two ineligible players in doing so. The protest was upheld, the game was forfeited to the Lynx, and with it the title since it gave them the playoffs, Buena Park having won the first game by a score of 1-0.
Last night's game was a gift to the Lionettes. The Lynx outhit them 8-5, but the Lionettes bunched four of those hits in the second inning, and combined them with a walk, a hit batsman, and an error to score all six runs.

of taking the family and trying out its spaciousness at the nearest Buick dealer’s—and a very few minutes on the open road will satisfy you that all-coil springing, low-pressure tires and Buick's torque-tube drive really do produce a ride that is matchless for its soft comfort.
But right now, it may be that the money angle is the thing uppermost in your mind, and on that we’d like to make two points:
All our records go to show that this is the most economical Buick ever built. It is easy on gas, on oil, on tires, on upkeep.
And if you choose it with
Dynaflow Drive,* it immediately eliminates all chance of friction-clutch repair and replacement—not to mention greatly reducing rear-axle and transmission maintenance.
Best of all, your initial outlay is a highly favorable one—whatever Buick you buy. For these brawny straight-eights — built rugged and solid for durable service — are priced at a level that makes them a standout buy in any price class.
