Avocado Root Rot Season on Says Farm Advisor Avocado root rot or decline shows up most frequently in the summer and fall months of the year, says Farm Advisor Don Gustafson of the Agricultural Extension Service. The reason for this, he states, is that the tree needs more moisture at this time, and with a bad root system the tree cannot get the water and nutrients it requires. Damage to roots, occurring during the winter months, will show up during the warm weather when the top of the tree is under stress for water. Symptoms to look for in this disease are: (1) decline is usually gradual, though sometimes rapid deterioration takes place, (2) foliage becomes pale in color, (3) leaves begin to wilt, (4) leaf fall is abnormally heavy, (5) new leaves are sparse and smaller than normal, so that the tops of the trees soon become thin, and (6) dieback of trees begins from the branch tip downward. In digging down around the drip of the tree the small fibrous feeder roots are found to be blackened, rough, and rotted. Poor drainage, resulting in the accumulation of excessive moisture in the soil during periods of heavy rainfall or over-irrigation, and Phytophthora cinnamoni, the cinnamon fungus, appear to be the two most important factors in... Fire Season Reaches Peak The costliest forest fire season in California since 1924 is now at its peak of danger. Federal and State forestry chiefs said today in a joint warning to hunters and all other who will be in the outdoors this Fall. “This has been the most explosive fire season California has had in 26 years,” said a statement issued by DeWitt Nelson, State Forester, and Perry A. Thompson, U.S. regional forester. “An unusual lack of humidity dried the forests and ranges this year to such a degree that some fires have traveled a mile in a few minutes. The peak of danger is right now, from the cumulative effect of months of dryness.” They urged hunters in the deer season opening September 16 to take these precautions: Smoke only in camps, habitations or areas marked "Smoke here." Don't leave campfires or warming fires until you kill the last spark. Report forest fires to the nearest forest station, peace officer or telephone operator. So far this year, California has may be applied toward credits needed for secural of a high school diploma if the school office is notified at time of registration. Registration fee is fifty cents. TRANSPARENT "GIRL" TEACHES FOOD LESSON LONDON (AP) — Lumena, the "girl who has no secrets," is all electric and made of a glass-like material to show how the body works. Lumena will be on view at the British Food Fair at Olympia, London, after which she will be shipped or flown to the Cleveland Health Museum, Ohio. Dr. Charles Hill, Member of Parliament, who gained fame as Britain's "radio doctor," will use this transparent model woman, whose "organs" light up at the touch of a switch, to demonstrate daily health talks at the Food Fair. had over 4000 forest and range fires. Fast-moving fronts of flame have taken six lives and burned more than 200,000 acres. Damage to watersheds, timber and other natural resources may exceed five million dollars—which comes out of taxpaypers' pockets. Nelson and Thomspon declared this year's outbreak of fires is surpassed only by the disastrous season of 1924 when 2600 fires burned 1,500,000 acres. Insecticides are most effective on sheep when sprayed while the wool is short. Home-Buyers Get More for Money Figures Reveal Home-buyers now get more for their money than at any time in modern history according to recently released figures which show home ownership at a new peak and, on the basis of the 1950 income, homes actually cost less today than in 1940. A nationwide study by the Construction Research bureau, indicates that the average one-family house, which sold for $4075 in 1940, costs $8950 today but the home-buyer actually pays less for it. For, while building costs have risen 12 per cent in 10 years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that wages have increased 125 per cent. Moreover, some home tracts offer 25 to 40 years to pay for the home, when in 1940, 10 years was the limit. This, and the fact that veterans can buy homes for no down payment, makes 1950 an ideal home-buying time. The home-buyer gets more in his house these days too, surveys show. For in modern tracts like the Lifetime Tract here in Anaheim, the buyer not only gets easy terms, but every modern convenience is included. Lots are landscaped, a rumpus room is available, modern baths and kitchens are of the latest, garbage disposals are included and many other new additions that make the three-bedroom homes real buys, and as the statistics show, at less than the buyer paid 10 years ago. Released-Time Classes Told The Released-Time Inter-Faith Committee announces that released-time classes for Anaheim City schools — grades four through eight—will begin the week of October 2, 1950. Children whose parents sign an enrollment card will be permitted to attend either a Protestant or Roman Catholic class for one hour each week during school time. The enrollment cards and schedules will be given to the children the latter part of this month. The Catholic classes are under the supervision of Rev. Maurice Dee, pastor of St. Boniface, and Sister Henrietta, Supervisor of Orange county Released-Time Catholic classes. For The Home of Distinction ... Planned to Your Individual Needs See HOWARD A. The members of the Anaheim Realty Board are proud of the part they have played in fostering home ownership. In Anaheim, it is estimated that approximately 70 per cent of all families occupy their own homes. This is decidedly above the national average of 55 per cent. We invite the co-operation of all organizations and persons interested in construction, financing, furnishing, maintenance and ownership of homes to participate with us in recognition of this great symbol of American enterprise which, appropriately enough, will close on Constitution Day, September 17.
