scale industrial zoning plan until the public supports it—but, planners are faced with an apathetic public, only 150 to 200 persons have taken the trouble to review the public zoning map in Anaheim city hall.
The first two roadblocks must be resolved before the city can proceed to provide the additional services necessary to induce light industry to be interested in Anaheim's industrial zone.
What do we mean by that?
No really desirable light industry is simply going to move in on an undeveloped orange grove and build the type of plant Anaheim could use.
The city (and county) must provide some streets, traffic arteries, sewage, water lines, and other utilities, in the "industrial zones."
Provision must be made for hooking the area into rail and truck lines. And, parking lots for employees must be considered.
The business and industry growth of Anaheim can be speeded right there by a stalemant which will prevent Anaheim from viding these services in the developed industrial zones.
The third roadblock mentioned is "lack of information."
Some of the opposition to planned development of businesses Anaheim's environs lies in fact that homeowners and partners do not, in most cases, spend of the same thing when theycuss bringing "light industry" Anaheim.
It is well that we present briefly the planner's interpretation of the term "light industry."
Light industry is clean, infensive, small factories and manfacturing plants.
Confined to a "belt" the place would be located centrally, easily reached by employees, and close transportation, water, gas, sewer power, and other facilities.
This would not be the "traditional" factory area that so many residents correctly fear.
Buildings would be of a decorative, modern design, clogged and separated by c

Population Trends Indicate Shift To Rural Living Says County Builder
Reports of national population shifts from cities to suburban areas are borne out in Orange county trends, according to Henry C. Cox, president of Lifetime Homes, Inc., of Santa Ana.
Cox said an increased number of home seekers have been visiting his three tracts in Santa Ana, Anaheim and Fullerton.
He attributed the increase to a growing knowledge of the benefits and ease of suburban life. Realtors have helped to encourage the trend by offering lower realty costs and space for larger homes. Architects have offered more designs to appeal to the public.
The over-all lower cost of suburban against city assessments and taxes has given the realtor a powerful stimulus to use in selling according to the builder.
Cox products the trend will gain more momentum with the development of suburban shipping districts and the construction of high-speed freeways.
Representatives of his concern have studied the economic and social tendencies of home buyers over the years, he reported. As a result of their studies the tractor developments in Orange county were planned.
The area has been advertised nationally as the parkland of the state. The corporation now has more than 500 homes under construction in Orange county with a total of 1500 planned.
The concern's main office is at 200 South Main street in Santa Ana. A tract office is located at Anaheim and a model home is situated nearby at the corner o. Citron and South streets.
Death Takes Jan C. Smuts
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, (P) — Field Marshal Jan Christian Smuts died tonight at his home at Irene near Pretoria.
He was 80 years old.
One of the most beloved elder statesmen in the world, the learned Smuts had been twice prime minister of the Union of South Africa, a leader of the democracies in both World Wars and the author of the concept of a British Commonwealth of Nations.
He was the author also of the preamble to the Charter of the United Nations, adopted in San Francisco in 1945, and had a share in the planning of the League of Nations.
Smuts was esteemed abroad not only as a stateman but also a scientist and philosopher. Honors had been piled high upon him by governments and educational institutions in many lands.
Though he carried the British banner in two world wars, Smuts had not a drop o. British blood in his veins. Of Dutch and French Huguenot descent, he first vowed on a later guerrilla leader in the South African war at the turn...
It eases the tax burden on residents and provides a source of income to develop schools and other city facilities. Most importantly, it increases the business of "service" industries such as restaurants, automobile sales and service, clothing, groceries, furniture stores, department stores, appliances, lumber, paint, truck growing and other food sources, and all the others you can readily name.
It thereby contributes to a higher standard of living for the area. (Tomorrow, the rights of citizens affected by re-zoning.)
M. B. Reed Dies at Home
M. B. Reed, 52, a native of Kansas, who came to Anaheim two years ago, died last night at the family home, 113 Midway Manor after an extended illness.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Reed; one sister, Mrs. Ethel Tidyman of Fresno and two nephews, Clayton R. Tidyman of Los Angeles and W. Fred Tidyman of Fresno. He was a member of the White Temple Methodist church.
Memorial services will be held at the Hilgenfeld chapel Wednesday at 10 o'clock. Rev. Frank E. Butterworth, pastor of the White Temple Methodist church, will conduct the services.
It was the desire of the deceased and it is the wish of the family that friends who planned to send flowers not to do so but contribute to a cancer fund.
Car Copped
While the method remains a mystery, one thing was certain—someone swiped a 1941 Buick belonging to Mrs. Oleta Bauman, 717 N. Lemon st.
The theft occurred between 11:20 p.m., on Friday and 7:40 a.m., Saturday morning. The car was parked in front of the Bauman home, and was taken while the owner was inside sleeping.
But the car, says the owner, was locked.
