Stengel Gambles with Lefty and Loses; Campanella Hurt as Dodgers Win Twice Dressen Almost Steals Victory By the Associated Press Manager Charley Dressen of Oakland's Pacific Coast leaders must be chuckling today over the way he scared the Los Angeles Angels and nearly won a long gamble. Presumably saving his best pitchers for next week's series with his closest pursuer, San Diego, Dressen started Frank Nelson and used a gent named Buck Tanner, just arrived from Rattlesnake, Fla., along with Hank Hehrman and Forrest Thompson on the mound against the Angels last night. Earl Rapp gave Oakland a 1-0 lead in the second with a homer and Dressen's plot seemed to be working okeh. But then there was no more scoring from Oakland until the ninth inning. And Los Angeles run up a 9-1 lead with power such as Frank Baumholtz' 13th homer with a man aboard. Los Angels' starting pitcher, Frank Marino, lost his stuff in the ninth and before Cal McLish could duse the Oakland blaze five runs had scored to make the final 9-6 for the Angels. Two more Oaks were on base when George Metkovich flied out. Dressen, even though he lost the ball game, didn't lose ground in the league race because San Diego lost to tail-end Sacramento. Casey Stengel defied the Fenway Park southpaw jinx and lost. As a result his New York Yankees are fidgeting atop the American League pennant scramble by only a half game today. The Yankees invaded the lair of the torrid third-placed Boston Red Sox last night for the opener of a two-game series. Casey sent Lefty Ed Lopat to face the Red Sox completely unaware that only one visiting lefthander, Hal Newhouser of Detroit, had pitched and won a complete game in Fenway Park this year. Casey didn't have long to wait to rue his decision. The Sox bombed Lopat for four runs in the second inning and went on to win 11 to 2. TIGERS GAIN While the Yanks were smeared, the runner-up Detroit Tigers, behind Newhouser, turned back the fourth - place Cleveland Indians, 5-3, in the opener of a two-game series in Detroit to move within a half game of the lead. For today's game, Stengel has named righthander Allie Reynolds (13-11) to oppose righthander Ellis Kinder (18-12). Lefty Mel Parnell breezed to his 15th victory as the Sox supported his eight-hit pitching with a 16-hit attack. Parnell now has won seven straight games and 10 out of his last 11 decisions. Keller Hits Vern Stephens led Boston by pounding his 29th homer. Evers and Johnny Groth knocked in the first two runs and Charlie Keller slammed home the two clinching ones with a pinch-l single. Newhouser allowed eight hits, including a home run by Allie Clark, in besting Earn Wynn. Rookie Sandalio Consuegna pitched the Washington Senators to a 3-0, six-hit victory over the Philadelphia Athletics and the Chicago White Sox edged the South Louis Browns, 6-5. Phils Drop Two The Brooklyn Dodgers supplied the biggest surprise in the National league by defeating the league-leading Philadelphia Phils, 2-0 and 3-2. The victories moved the second place Brooks to within 5 games of the Phils. Big Don Newcombe attempted to perform the iron man stunt. He blanked the Phils on three hits in the opener but was forced to bow out for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of the second game, trailing, 2-0. Newcombe is the first pitch to try the feat since Buck Newsom attempted it and failed for Los Angels' starting pitcher Frank Marino, lost his stuff in the ninth and before Cal McLish could douse the Oakland blaze five runs had scored to make the final 9-6 for the Angels. Two more Oaks were on base when George Metkovich flied out. Dressen, even though he lost the ball game, didn't lose ground in the league race because San Diego lost to tail-end Sacramento, 7-2. Elsewhere Seattle whipped Portland 6-3 and Hollywood trimmed San Francisco 5-3 in an afternoon game. For today's game, Stengel has named righthander Allie Reynolds (13-11) to oppose righthander Ellis Kinder (13-12). Lefty Mel Parnell breezed to his 15th victory as the Sox supported his eight-hit pitching with a 16-hit attack. Parnell now has won seven straight games and 10 out of his last 11 decisions. Keller Hits Vern Stephens led Boston by pounding out his 29th homer, a triple and two singles. At Detroit, the Tigers came up with four runs in the seventh inning to erase a 2-1 deficit. He now has mustered a 21 point lead over the pack with a .370 mark. Goodman added only two points last week with 13 hits in 33 trips, but his rivals were slipping badly in the mean-time. Detroit's George Kell took the second spot with .349 as Larry Doby of Cleveland skidded from runner-up to third place with .341. New York's Hank Bauer dropped from third to fourth with a 14 point skid to .336, and Boston's Al Zarilla, was fifth with .334. It looks like smooth sailing for Stan Musial in National League batting derby. The Rams last year were champions of the National Football League's Western division. The game is expected to give a good line on regular season prospects of both the Rams and the reconstructed Giants, who have retained only 15 of last season's players. Glenn Davis, former Army all-American halfback, will make his eastern professional debut. Cleveland at home (17): St. Louis New York 2, Washington 3, Phila- It took the Buena Park Lynx 20 of them—innings, not runs—to go one up in their three-game playoff for the Southern California league title last night when they beat the Orange Lionettes 2-1. Moreover, it was in the form of a rally that the Lynx uprising came, since they were one run down going into the bottom of the 20th, Orange having scored in its half of the frame. Bertha Reagen and Beverly Meissen twirled all the way for their respective teams. Reagen allowed 12 hits and fanned 15, while Meissen gave up eight over the 20 innings and whiffed 11/ Reagen herself broke the string of 38 goose eggs on the scoreboard in the visitor's half of the 20th. She opened the inning with a single, stole second, moved to third on an infield out, and scored on a passed ball. But the Lynx, with defeat starring at them after over three hours of play, quickly tied it up in their half and then pushed across the decider. Robbie Mulkey contributed the evening's big blow when she drove out a homer with one out in that half of the inning. Patty Everett followed her with a single, but was forced at second on Meissen's grounder. Then Joan Alsup blasted a double and Meissen came around with the run that won her own ball game. The Lynx, who need one more victory to clinch the league title, will try to get it in the second game of the series tonight at Orange. The final game of the playoff is scheduled for Fullerton on Tuesday.
