For Results, Quick A Page 7 Anaheim Gazette, Wednesday, Sept. 6, 1950 BIRTHDAY CELEBRANTS—Members of McMahan's Anaheim staff gather round the cake on the 31st observance of the furniture store chain's founding. Left to right are Gene Albin, James Dicus, Henry Casey, Joe Carr, manager Arthur Fisher, and Bud Harris. (Gazette Photo by Bradley) McMahan’s Furniture Stores Observe 31st Anniversary with Birthday Sale Nurserymen Say By Orange County McMahan’s Furniture Stores Observe 31st Anniversary with Birthday Sale McMahan’s Furniture Stores, billed as the largest independently owned chain of retail stores in the West this month celebrate the 31st anniversary of their founding. The original McMahan store, from which the present chain has sprung was founded in Bakersfield. The McMahan family continues to operate the entire group of retail outlets. McMahan’s came to Anaheim in October, 1947. The 221 East Center street store was formerly occupied by the Stroup-Barnes Furniture Company. J. V. Payne, a member of the McMahan family, directs the activities of the Anaheim operation. The local manager is Arthur Fisher. Kenneth Glenn is supervisor of the Anaheim store as well as the McMahan stores in Fullerton and Whittier. McMahan’s entered Fullerton 13 years ago with the purchase of the Harris Furniture Store at 225 North Spadra Road. Local manager of the Fullerton store is Kenneth C. Humborg. Commenting on McMahan’s 31st Anniversary celebration, Payne said, “McMahan’s policy throughout their existence has always been to provide sound, honest values on merchandise of nationally-recognized character and quality—and to offer those values on the easiest of credit arrangements. In the face of rising costs, McMahan’s buyers have searched the nation to bring values at continued low prices.” Payne added, “Carload purchases, complete buy-outs of manufacturers’ lots and other means of getting extra low prices have been used to make this birthday sale a memorable one.” ‘1950 Tide’ (Continued from Page 1) To provide housing for these new residents, the city of Anaheim—despite pressures and overly cautious progress—has responded with the greatest building boom in its history. Since 1946, approximately 200 new homes have been mediate, far-reaching plan of orderly development and growth—based on sound economic precepts. This plan must be developed along at least two major lines—residential growth and industrial growth. And, since the horse is already out of the barn and running, the sooner we take steps to catch and curb the runaway, the better. (Tomorrow, the Anaheim Gazette discusses the housing situation in Anaheim.) Social Security Changes Noted The effects of recent changes in Old-Age and Survivors Insurance, resulting from amendments to the Social Security Act, were announced today by J. G. Bretherton, Manager of the Long Beach field office. “Congress has provided for increased payments, extended coverage, and an increase of the amount that may be earned by a beneficiary while receiving Old-Age and Survivors Insurance,” Bretherton stated. “Provision for increased payments will be of great interest to the thousands of beneficiaries now receiving Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance benefits.” Bretherton emphasized, however, that “no one now receiving such benefits need call at the Social Security field office to obtain this increase in payment since they will all be notified by mail of their new benefit amount. “Congress has provided for an automatic increase in payments for all persons who are presently receiving Old-Age and Survivors Insurance benefits,” Bretherton explained. Beginning October 1950, all checks sent to present beneficiaries will be in the increased amounts. Nurserymen Say By Orange County Nurserymen’s Asso. Select evergreens that will be an asset to your home. Despite all of the natural beauty and the appeal of evergreens, the desirable effect is often lost because they are frequently misused by the home gardener, largely because they are misplaced and the wrong type chosen. A little study and care in selecting, placing and planting will help the gardener avoid this bad luck with evergreens. In regard to site of planting the size, form, texture and color of the evergreens must be considered. The smaller members of the pyramidal group, such as Irish yew, are used at the corner of the house or beside the doorway. The round or globe shape plants are used primarily in formal gardens and along each side of steps. The spreading type is the most useful for foundation plantings and for general use about the small garden. This includes the Pfitzer juniper and Juniper tamariscifolia. Some of the more common varieties to help you plan your evergreen plantings are: ARBORVITAE—The most frequently planted of all evergreens. In this group they range from the dwarf round to the narrow columnar types. The Golden Arborvitae may be used on either side of entrance steps. It is slow growing with a height of about six feet. CYPRESS — Lawson cypress makes a fine graceful specimen tree. Arizona cypress and Forbes cypress are both good for hedge or windbreak. JUNIPER—This group provides a wide range of plants, from spreading prostrate plants to regular tall trees. There are several other varieties of evergreen, such as pines, firs, and spruces, that are often suitable for the home plantings. ‘1950 Tide’ (Continued from Page 1) To provide housing for these new residents, the city of Anaheim — despite pressures and overly cautious progress—has responded with the greatest building boom in its history. Since 1946, approximately 200 new homes have been built each year. And, now, the building trend is moving along at record levels. Sections of Anaheim and its environs that many of you can remember as open land or orange groves now are the sites of acres of homes, finished, landscaped, and occupied. Acres more, with houses in various stages of construction, now sprawl the landscape. It has become true recently, of course, that the Korean war threatens to curb rampant, speculative building. Regulations on down payments and threatened government controls on prices and materials have to some degree put brakes on plans for some larger tract building — particularly to developments of the more inexpensive homes. The so-called “better type” housing, the 1100-square-feet and up — $10,000 and higher — type house may be less restricted as far as financing goes, however, since purchasers who seek this type home, by and large, are in better financial positions to make large down-payments and to cover larger payments. YET, we must face the fact that a basic problem remains unresolved. Anaheim must have an im- “Congress has provided for an automatic increase in payments for all persons who are presently receiving Old-Age and Survivors Insurance benefits,” Bretherton explained. Beginning October 1950, all checks sent to present beneficiaries will be in the increased amounts. Robina Perry, 26, stalwart Santa Ana housewife, sat in a West Fourth st. bar last midnight, and suddenly hauled off with a bottle and conked a startled citizen on the next stool. Acording to Santa Ana police reports, that is. Sgt. Jack Lentz, of the P.D. was hailed by the worried bartender after a few more passes by Robina. He spoke placatingly to Robina on the advantages of peaceful and ladylike conduct. “Who the what are you, and mind your own business?” Robina replied in substance. Sgt. Lentz melted back and called the paddy wagon. This was their sort of work. The paddy wagon crew, very husky men, had never met anyone quite like Robina, herself a rugged five feet four inches. Sgt. Leonard and Officer Davis hadn’t arrived until Robina had, of her own free will left the bar, in company with two Marines and a civilian. They overtook her on West Fourth st., where there was plenty of fighting space in the open. Robina made good use of it. Capt. McWilliams finally came to the aid of Leonard and Davis, and they managed to get the cuffs on Robina. But she was still neither silenced nor convinced. As they arrived at the county jail in the paddy wagon, Robina informed the world loudly that she had been criminally assaulted by the officers, and she didn’t mean manhandled. At the jailer’s desk she refused to give booking information, police said, and all hands had to carry her, struggling, up the stairs to the women’s quarters. “This,” said Sgt. Leonard, “is the first time I’ve ever been kicked upstairs.” Upstairs, they turned Robina over to the jail matron. Robina easily broke away and ran into her cell. When they tried to shut the door, she fought that move successfully for some time. But finally they pried her loose and got her locked in. While the matron fitted on her brass knuckles, the officers went away rapidly. Robina was booked for being drunk and resisting arrest. Go to Church on Sunday. Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER GET IT RIGHT — Newspapers have often been criticized for making mistakes. But, a new story is no more accurate than its information. The other night, Stan Riley, called in the results of ball games his organization was sponsoring ... "And, tomorrow night the Boosters' will play the Carpet Baggers," Riley said ... "How can you say that?" the genial promoter was asked ... "Say what?" he snapped back ... "That the Boosters will play the Carpets tomorrow night?" ... "Well, don't they?" ... "Not according to the schedule you made up," Riley was told ... "Well," he said, "I made a mistake, didnt I?" And with that he let it go. But the damage was done. The misinformation got into print because the fellow giving the newspaper the information didn't have it right. It is next to impossible for a newspaper to check details on material shoved at it, at deadline time. It is surprising that more mistakes aren't made.
