Zion Bumps White Temple To Hold Second Place Spot
Six runs in the first two frames were all that Zion Lutheran needed last night to turn back White Temple 7-5 to retain second place.
In the second game, Presbyterian forfeited to St. Boni-face.
A pair each of walks, hits and errors gave Zion five runs in the first inning. Dick Henning and Merle Dick got the hits. A single by Walt Schmitt and a double by Herb Grimm added another in the second that eventually turned out to be the deciding tally.
White Temple picked up single runs in the first third and sixth, and a pair in the fifth in a futile effort to whittle away the Zion lead.
Agren and Larson will play Wallace Tractors of the B Juvenile league tonight at 6:30 and at 8 the Anhheim Bloomers will tackle Fullerton.
Triple Crown To Become Reality
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., (P). The triple crown, a mythical laurel bestowed on the winner of the Kentucky Derby the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, took on official status today with the decision of the thoroughbred racing associations to award a trophy to triple crown winners.
The existing triple crown winners are: Sir Barton, 1919; Gallant Fox, 1930; Omaha, 1935; War Admiral, 1937; Whirlaway, 1941; Count Fleet, 1943; Assault, 1946.

Boston and Brooklyn, the pre-season hennant picks are down but not out today—6½ games back with about six weeks to go.
Surging at Fenway Park, fourth-place Boston has a five-game winning streak going in the American League. All were scored at the expense of the tattered Philadelphia A's, 10-6 victims last night. Washington comes into Fenway tonight, followed by all the Western clubs.
Brooklyn, cooling off the New York Giants yesterday in both ends of a doubleheader, 8-6 and 5-1, regained second place in the National League from Boston. But those idle Phillies, showing no signs of slackening their pace, threaten to romp home. The Phils open a series in New York tonight while Brooklyn entertains Boston.
Cincinnati shaded Chicago, 2-1, in the only other National League game. Kenny Raffensberger scattered six Cub hits and Connie Ryan drove in both Cincy scores.

Pads Hot Streak Comes Too Late
By JIM HUBBART
Associated Press Sports Writer
If the San Diego Padres are assaying a comeback, they've probably started too late to do themselves much good in the Pacific Coast League pennant race. But the Padres are in a position to administer a double dose of embarrassment to the opposition.
San Diego, scourge of the circuit before mid-season rigor mortis set in, rang up its 10th straight victory last night by whipping Portland. 4 to 2. Bulwarked by the inevitable Suitcase Simpson, the Padre battling power was there in force. It was just like old times at Lane field.
Despite the triumph, San Diego dropped half a notch more behind the pace setting Oakland Acorns, who took a double header from Brooklyn, cooling off on the New York Giants yesterday in both ends of a doubleheader, 8-6 and 5-1, regained second place in the National League from Boston. But those idle Phillies, showing no signs of slackening their pace, threaten to romp home. The Phils open a series in New York tonight while Brooklyn entertains Boston.
Cincinnati shaded Chicago, 2-1, in the only other National League game. Kenny Raffensberger scattered six Cub hits and Connie Ryan drove in both Circy scores with a homer and single off Bob Rush.
Detroit clung to its three-game lead over runnerup Cleveland in the American chase. New York's loss to Washington dropped the Yanks 4½ games back and only two games ahead of the Red Sox.
The Tigers stomped Chicago, 8-8, on nine hits and nine walks. Aaron Robinson and George Kell each hit his eighth homer, while Hal White held the White Sox to seven hits for his fourth win.
Cleveland had to go 12 innings with the stubborn St. Louis Browns, 5-4. Early Wynn's pinch shot following Ray Boone's triple did the trick. St. Louis pulled a triple play in the second on Daie Mitchell's liner to Owen Friend with the bases full.
New York's Yankees, only first division club to tumble, bowed to the Senators, 2-1. After pitching no-hit ball for 6½ innings, Allie Reynolds finally bowed to Stid Hudson. In addition, the Yanks lost the services of outfielder Hank Bauer, hit on the head by a throw from catcher Al Evans, trying to pick him off third.

Personal observations when reccalling the action in Wednesday
night’s Southern California grid
opener between the Rams and the
Redskins: I’m not ready to give
up yet on Glenn Davis despite the
fact that he was quite unimpressive in averaging only 2.83 yards per carry. The Rams blocking was miserable—nay, non-extant—every time Mr. Outside carried the ball, and who can gain that way?
Davis did simply drop one touchdown pass, however, but later on he caught one just like it and was caught from the rear, anyhow, with a clear field ahead. Harry Gilmer did the running down. Gilmer, always heralded as a passer, played nearly the whole game as defensive safety man, and made several key tackles.
Santa Clara’ Hall Haynes also showed well on defense and both he and Gilmer tackle cleanly, crisply, but with authority. The Redskins still have a sparkling pass defense despite the departure of Dan Sandifer. Pete Stout and Howie Livingstone work in with Warriors Remain Atop Cage Loop; Nuggets Win
Two tremendous quarter-long scoring bursts told in the high school basketball league last night as Faulkner’s Nuggets trounced Webber’s Lakers 53-22 and Welch’s Warriors trampled Denny’s Capitols 46-10.
In a scheduled third game Goff’s Royals forfeited to Schmitt’s Bombers.
The Warrior win in the second game kept them atop the league standings with an unblemished record. The Capitols managed to make it close for the first quarter, the Warriors holding a 7-5 edge at the point, but the Warriors blanked them 18-0 in the second period to lead 25-5 at half time. It was easy after that.
A similar spurt won for the Nuggets, although theirs came earlier. It was 18-0 at the quarter and 22-6 at halftime.
Bill Ames was the high scorer for the evening, hitting 18 for the Nuggets. Teammate Ed Ramerize got 15. Augie Huesca potted 12 to pace the Warrior win with Grape Welch hitting 11.
The league will play twice next week ending this week.
Climaxed by the all-star guebetween players from the fourand fifth districts, 10 more ctests are scheduled this week—for La Palma park as the Alheim American Legion tourment swings into its third round.

Culver City built up a big lowith a four-run third frame, but

Why Work When You Can Do This?
DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Paul Lowry, handicapper for the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press, achieved the dream of all horse handicappers. He picked all eight winners at Del Mar yesterday.
Only once before since racing was legalized in 1933 has a handicapper swept the program. Lowry had, in order, Short Thorn at $3.76, Madame Fury at $6.60, Your Game at $3.80, Competino at $7.40, Cubette at $6.80, King Rhymer at $3.80, Hidden Moon at $4.20 and Montanes at $8.50.
Two members of the Chicago Cubs—Tom Burng and Ed Williams—scored three runs apiece in a game in 1883.

NEW YORK (AP) — Erv Palice
5-1 pitching victory over the New York Giants yesterday may have been his last appearance in Brooklyn for a while.
When the 22-year-old Dodge righthander returned to the Pete Grounds clubhouse he found Uncle Sam’s draft notice waiting in him.

Early Odds Favor Brown Bomber, 3-1
NEW YORK (US) — Ezzard Charles, the NBA - recognized heavyweight king, will be the underdog Sept. 27 when he meets Joe Louis at Yankee Stadium.
First odds offered were 3 to 1 that the Brown Bomber, now 36, would recapture the title he surrendered 18 months ago. Perhaps they'll shorten before fight time, but Louis, as always, will be favored.
Charles, 29, never has made a smashing hit with the public.
