Wynn’s Record Belies Flag Drive Contribution By RALPH RODEN Associated Press Sports Writer Early Wynn’s contribution to the Cleveland Indians’ pen-nant drive is even greater than his record indicates. The 30-year-old righthander has turned in 13 victories but seven of them have been over the other first division teams—Detroit, New York and Boston. Only Bob Lemon, ace righthander, has a better record on the Cleveland team. Lemon, who goes after his 19th victory today in the final of a two-game series against the pace-setting Tigers, has scored eight of his triumphs against first division teams. Five of Lemon’s conquests have been over the fourth-place Boston Red Sox. Wynn has beaten the Sox only once but holds three triumphs over Detroit and New York. Brightens Outlook Wynn considerably brightened the Indians’ pennant outlook last night as he turned back the Tigers, 3-2, in a 10-inning thriller before 60,120 fans in Cleveland's municipal stadium. The triumph moved the runner-up tribe to within 2½ games of the Bengals. The game was one of the most dramatic of the season. The Indians scored a run in the second inning and Wynn nursed this slender margin until the ninth. In the ninth, with one out, Hoot Evers beat out a slow bounder over the mound for a single. Johnny Groh followed with a home run into the lower left field stands and a deep gloom settled throughout the stands. Kell Maintains AL Bat Lead CHICAGO (AP)—George Kell of Detroit is still a step ahead of Cleveland's Larry Doby for the American League batting leadership. Kell’s average, including games of Sunday, is .355. Doby has .351. A week ago Kell was hitting .353, Doby .350. The Detroit third baseman also has registered the most hits, 153, and the most doubles, 33. Others in the top ten of the league are Bill Goodman, Boston, .343; Al Zarilla, Boston, .340; Walt Dropo, Boston, and Hoot Evers, Detroit, tied for fifth place with .329; Phil Rizzuto, New York, .320; Vic Wertz, Detroit, .319; Johnny Pesky, Boston, .317; and Dom Di-Maggio, Boston, and Johnny Groh, Detroit, tied for tenth with .316. Vern Stephens of Boston had scored the most runs, 96. Dropo is... the runner-up tribe to within 2½ games of the Bengals. The game was one of the most dramatic of the season. The Indians scored a run in the second inning and Wynn nursed this slender margin until the ninth. In the ninth, with one out, Hoot Evers beat out a slow bounder over the mound for a single. Johnny Groth followed with a home run into the lower left field stands and a deep gloom settled throughout the stands. The vast throng began to move silently toward the exit gates as Hal Newwhoser retired the first two Indians in the last of the ninth. But Al (Flip) Rosen brought them back in a hurry by socking a home run well over the left field fence to tie the score. The belt was Rosen's 31st of the year. The Tigers threatened in the tenth but Wynn struck out George Kell with a runner on second to end the bid and the Indians quickly broke up the game in their half of the inning. Allie Clark got things underway with a double to right. Speedy Bob Avila went in to run for Clark. Jim Hegan was intentionally passed and Wynn sacrificed the runners along. Newwhoser then purposely walked Ike Boone to load the bases. Manager Lou Boudreau then went against "the book" and sent lefthanded hitting Dale Mitchell up to bat for righthanded hitting Bob Kennedy. Mitchell, a fast man, sent a high bounder to short. Connie Berry fired the ball home but the speedy Avila slid under the throw to win the game. The game was the only one scheduled in the American League. Action in the National League also was slight. In the only games played, the Chicago Cubs nipped the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6, and the improving Cincinnati Reds thrashed the Pittsburgh Pirates, 13-8. The Cubs staged a last ditch rally to whip the Cards, scoring twice in the ninth after the Red Birds had taken the lead with two in the eighth. Canners Enter So. Cal. Playoffs Hunt Foods Canners, second ranking softball team in Fullerton, have entered the Southern California Softball championships, it was announced yesterday by Manager Duane Winters. The Canners will oppose the winner of the Newhall Solomini-teens-Maywood All-Star game on Saturday night at 9 at Orange. Vern Stephens of Boston had scored the most runs, 96. Dropo is the RBI leader with 111. Doerr and Gene Woodling of New York are tied for the most triples, nine, and Al Rosen of Cleveland is the home run leader with 30. Dom DiMaggio has stolen the most bases, 12. The leading pitcher is Dizzy Trout with an .818 average on nine victories and two defeats. Vic Rashi of New York has the most strikeouts. Big Jim Wilson, LA’s Baumholtz Look PCL Class By The Associated Press With the Pacific Coast League season entering its 21st week tonight, now seems as good a time as any to clean off the spindle and submit a few oddments, to wit: 1. Frankie Baumholtz apparently will win the batting championship. He’s still batting a rosy .380 and has headed the list almost since the beginning. 2. Seattle’s Jim Wilson may become the first 30 game winner since Larry Jansen cavorted for San Francisco four years ago. Wilson has 20 and figures to start 12 more against mediocre opposition. The Rainiers have finished the tough part of their schedule. 3. The Portland Beavers have the loop’s best pinch hitters. They’re No. 1 in this department, mainly via the clutch efforts of Johnny Rucker, Eddie Barr, John Ritchey, and Vic Mastro. 4. Working agreements with major league clubs don’t always pan out, as witness the case of the San Diego Padres and Herb Conyers. Cleveland sent Conyers out here in May and the Padres were obliged to play him at first base, even though the man couldn’t hit Coast pitching at all. Conyers was transferred to Oklahoma City on Aug. 2 and Max West and Jack Graham got back into the Padre lineup together. Mathias Chilly On Iceland Track REYKJAVIK, Iceland (UP) lare’s Bob Mathias got a coldception in the Iceland track field championships, but he managed to finish in a first place in two events, although losing in another. Mathias cleared 5 ft. 8 7/8 to tie with Icelander Fred Finney yesterday in the high jump. The 110 meter high hurdles, thins led the first half of the race but was overtaken by Iceland Orn Clausen at the finish. It were timed in 15.3 seconds. Coen is the European decathlon champ. Mathias tossed the shot 45 2 1/8 in. This was good only sixth place. Gunhr Huseby of Iceland wound up first with heave of 52 ft. 4½ in. Whitewater Choice Over Mario Trigo LOS ANGELES (UP) Archie Whitewater, San Francisco Cherokee, was rated a 4 t choice over Mario Trigo, Los Angeles switch-hitter, in the week 10-round exercise tonight at Olympic auditorium. Both these lightweight busy fighters blessed with a supply of sock power. What lack in accuracy they make up in determination. The Chief ped a disputed split decision week to Rudy Cruz, and will probably have his hands full ton with Trigo’s baffling style. Gaufor the Anaheim outf Confident Charles Tabbed To Whip Beshore Tonight By MURRAY ROSE BUFFALO, N. Y. (AP)—Ring-rusty but confident Ezzard Charles returns to action tonight, an almost prohibitive favorite to blast longshot Freddie Beshore out of his path to a lucrative crack at Joe Louis. Sharp-shooting Ezzard is rated at least 1 to 5 to belt the day lights out of Beshore and hold on to his NBA heavyweight championship. The 15-round title fight starts at 9 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Memorial auditorium. Sidelined Sidelined by a rib and heart injury for almost six months, the 29-year old champion aims to renew his ring campaign in a different role. Hitherto an efficient but cautious performer, Charles plans to turn "Tiger" tonight and gun for an eye-catching and quick kayo. A spectacular job against the 26-year-old Harrisburg, Pa., challenger will bolster Charles' box office appeal against the comeback Louis. The International Boxing club wants to match the two in Yankee Stadium Sept. 27. The prospects of a one-sided battle plus two postponements caused by Charles' injury has hurt the ticket sale. Promoter Dewey Michaels is looking for a crowd of around 10,000 and a gate of "over $60,000." No TV or Radio The show will not be televised nor broadcast and that may bring on a last rush for tickets. Charles is down to receive 40 per cent of the net gate while Beshore will collect 17½. Off the record, Beshore (26-6 and 1 draw) doesn't seem to rate with Charles (66-5 and 1 draw) but the former gob has a bobbing and weaving style that could cause Charles some trouble. Had they reversed the score, the Lutherans would have tied up the number three spot. Second place Grace Lutherans staged a late inning drive to down the Presbyterians 7-5 in the second half of the Church League doubleheader at City Park last night. Going into the seventh inning, St. Boniface trailed the Zion Lutherans by three big runs. The Lutherans had jumped to a two run lead in the first, added one in the third and then pounded out three in the fourth for a total of six. The Bonneys got one in the third and two in the fourth to make things 3-6 prior to the stretch drive. The tying blast came in the St. Boniface half of the seventh. With two down-and nobody on, Fran Patin doubled aboard and went to third on Al Bushman’s single. Bud Stegfel errored on and then he and Bushman both went the rest of the way to send the game into extra innings. The rejuvenated Bonneys pushed the big one across in the last of the ninth via a double by Pat Patin, a single by Ray Heinze and Fran Patin’s infield out which scored brother Pat. Grace Lutherans got an early five run lead, then found themselves hard-pressed to hold down the charging Presbyterians. While the Lutherans went scoreless until the waning minutes, the Presbyterian squad notched two in the Stagg, 88, Set For Grid Job STOCKTON (CP)—Amos Alonzo Stagg, the grand old man of football, will celebrate his 88th birthday tomorrow—looking ahead to his 61st consecutive year of coaching American college football. Within two weeks, Stagg plans to report to Susquehanna University to assist his son, Amos Alonzo Jr. It will be his fourth season at the small Lutheran school in Selinsgrove, Pa. Stagg is the dean of football mentors. He started at Springfield, (Mass.) college in 1890. Then he moved to the University of Chicago in 1892 for a 41-year stretch, followed by 14 years at the College of the Pacific here. Stagg was graduated from Yale in 1888. Although he became an All America in football, his first athletic prowess was in baseball. He pitched on five championship teams, from 1886-90. Game time for the Anaheim outfit is 9 p.m. Tac locals gained the second round with a 2-0 win over a highly regarded Compton squad a week ago Sunday. The first round thrash was highlighted by the calm, collected performance of pitcher Dick Ramella. Culver City downed Alhambra this weekend to gain a second appearance in the three-week baseball extravaganza. First game of the evening, commencing at 7 p.m., pits Los Angeles and the Lumberman's Post. Optimists Belted By Fullerton, 15-4 Vern Weaver drove in all four runs yesterday, but those were far too few as the Anaheim Optimists were battered 15-4 by Fullerton at City Park. Weaver got the Anaheim runs by homering in the sixth and seventh innings, each time with a man on base. Fullerton, however, clinched the game in the first inning by scoring eight times on five hits and five walks. Del Crandall Classified 1-A FULLERTON (AP) — Whether catcher Del Crandall finishes the season with the Boston Braves will be largely up to his draft board. Crandall, 20-year-old native Californian, received his notice yesterday—1-A. He wasn't told when to report for his physical. The rejuvenated Bonneins pushed the big one across in the last of the ninth via a double by Pat Patin, a single by Ray Heinze and Fran Patin's infield out which scored brother Pat. Grace Lutherans got an early five run lead, then found themselves hard-pressed to hold down the charging Presbyterians. While the Lutherans went scoreless until the waning minutes, the Presbyterian squad notched two in the third, one in the fourth and then tied things up with two more in the fifth. A double by Rod Cookus and a four-bagger by Steve Holden produced the count knotters. Then up stepped old trouble-shooter Art Altheide, ace Lutheran hurler. Altheide relieved Harry Stief on the mound and retired the challengers one-two-three in the last two innings. Meantime, his buddies produced a pair of runs to win the ball game. Adolph Westerhold cracked a triple in the sixth and made it home on an error for the decider. For good measure, Del Martens and Paul Altheide singled in another run in the seventh.
