VOLUME LXXIX Anaheim's FIRST Newspaper INDUSTRIES OF ANAHEM PRINCIPAL PARTS—White block letters which will adorn the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce booth now under construction at the County Fair grounds, are lined up for inspection by Chamber office secretary Genevieve Drummond. Some of the exhibits of local manufacturers destined for the show are at left back, next to the list of Anaheim Industries. Fair opens five-day run tomorrow. Chamber of Commerce Airs Plans for Community Fair The inclusion in current plans for Anaheim's Annual Hallowe'en festival of a five-day Community Fair, featuring local merchandise and manufactured articles was announced today by the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce. The move for the extravaganza which will precede the Hallowe'en festival was made public this morning following approval of recommendation for the project by the Chamber Board of Directors. Integral parts of the Community Fair, in addition to the displays of merchandise and manufactured articles, will also include a giant midway featuring rides and concessions, and a queen contest. The fair gets underway Thursday, October 26. Night schedules are in store for the opening, for Friday and the following Monday. Fairgrounds will operate afternoons on Saturday and Sunday. The queen contest; which begins some five weeks before the fair, will place emphasis on personality and ticket-selling ability. Various organizations about town will put forth candidates whose bid for the throne will be determined by the amount of raffle tickets they and their sponsors can sell. Proceeds from the ticket sales go to underwrite the Hallowe'en festival. The sponsor of the ultimate queen gets first choice at midway concessions sites. All midway concessions will be operated by local service clubs and fraternal orders, according to play in a giant exhibit tent, according to Chamber officials. Along with this auto show, featuring the latest makes and models, is in prospect. In general, the 1950 Community Fair will be patterned after the successful Civic Progress Exhibition of 1948." Chamber of Commerce Manager E. W. Moeller said this morning. Plans for the event are being handled by the Hallowe'en festival committee, headed by Ken Hellyer. Materials, such as the tent and the amusement facilities are being supplied by the Pan American Amusement Corporation. Co. It tentatively placed the earthquake's location in the northern tip of Burma near the China border. Capt. Elliott Roberts of the survey told a reporter that the earthquake had a magnitude of 8.4. He said this compares with 8.5 for the maximum so far recorded. The earthquake had been reported on seismographs around the world. Roberts said it was premature to be too exact of the quake's location, although he thought that the Burma-China border was correct. He said there was no doubt that it was a tremendous quake. "It was a humdinger all right," he said. Sea Scout's LVP Ship Visited by Rotary Clubmen Recognition of Anaheim Sea Scout ship 280 was accorded yesterday as Anaheim Rotary club, who co-sponsor the group with the Lions, heard Bill Spurgeon, commodore of the Balboa Sea Scout base, speak at their regular poonmeeting — then visited en masse the landlocked 38 foot diesel-powered boat local Sea Scouts are constructing. Although Rotary has long sponsored a Boy Scout troop, they undertook joint sponsorship of the Sea Scout ship slightly less than a year ago. The program was instituted as an answer to a need for an advanced "explorer" program in Anaheim to take boys coming from Scout troops through the high school age. Proximity of the ocean and active Sea Scout base at Balboa, made Sea Scouting a "natural." Largest project undertaken to date by the Sea Scouts has been the purchase of the old LCP hull, complete with 155 Hercules diesel marine engine; procured through the assistance of Anaheim, Santa Ana and Long Beach Sea Scout officers.
