Deer Population Calculated To Swamp California Hunters SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The vanguard of California’s 300,000 deer hunters who took to the hills for the opening of deer season looked forward to what is expected to be the most successful season in the history of the state. But, for the good of the deer they hunt, it is practically a sure bet that the state’s nimrods will not come with 50 per cent of killing the number of deer they should. It’s a simple matter of arithmetic, but the answer is putting grey hairs on the head and wrinkles in the brows of game management experts who for a quarter of a century have worked to provide more deer for the hunters. Now, suddenly, they are called upon to provide more hunters for the deer—or rather to arrange that more hunters get the deer they go after. In the past 10 years the average deer kill in California has been 41,000 or slightly over for a total harvest in the period of 410,000. Last year the state’s hunters bagged a total of 52,028—the highest shooting bag ever recorded. That looks pretty good. The catch is that for the sake of the deer remaining it is not good enough by at least that much more. In 1940, a game commission survey showed there were 406,000 deer in the state, or more than 4000 less than has been killed face the prospect of over grazed ranges which will not provide sufficient forage to sustain them. Three things, game management experts say, can be done: First—The hunters can do a better job of hunting. A recent kill map worked out by the fish and game division showed that 90 percent of all deer were killed within a mile and a half of some traveled road. So the advice of the division to hunters who fail to readily connect is to get back in the hills. Find a deer trail not already over-run with hunters and shoot your deer. Second—Relax the “buck law” to permit shooting does in the heavily populated areas. That, under one system or another has already been done in all western states but California. In Colorado it resulted in an increased doe kill from 2000 to 40,000 in 10 years, and the annual take of bucks rose proportionately. Third—Open more land to hunting. Nearly all public lands, except a few refuge areas, are already open. The major part of the closed deer range is private property, and thus far hunting such land appears to be a matter largely of individual relations between sportsmen and individual ranchers.
