FIRST LOVE
Pest to Look Over Girls
Before Settling on One
Dear Miss Dix: I am past 28 but due to my work and because I am bashful and a great lover of sports I have never taken any interest in girls. Never had a sweetheart. Never went with a girl even while in high school. Two months ago I met a girl with whom I have fallen desperately in love. She is wonderful. Even my father and mother think so, but my father thinks that before I marry this girl I should go with some other girls and be able to contrast her with them. He thinks I haven't had enough experience to be able to judge whether she is suited to me or not. But I know she is all right. I never was so happy in my life. How about it?
JIMMY
ANSWER: Well. Jimmy, you seem to have it bad. First love has hit you for a goal and so it is useless to advise putting off the wedding until you can find out whether she is the only one or not.
FATHER'S ADVICE WISE
But all the same your father's counsel is good. Marriage is for a long, long time and before you enter into it it is a good thing to shop around among the girls so as to be sure you are getting just what you want in a wife.
Half the unhappy marriages are the result of men and women's marrying before they gave the opposite sex the once-over. A boy with girls thinks he has fallen in love with the girl next door or the girl he works next to in business and he marries her. Then he meets up with another girl, who is pretty while his wife is homely, who is gay and lively where his wife is quiet and dumb, who flatters him while his wife tells him of his faults, and he falls head over heels in love with the stranger and the mischief is to pay.
The more men and women know each other before marriage, the less likely they are to make mistakes in selecting their mates. And for this reason every boy and girl should go about with as many other boys and girls as possible. In that way they will be able to institute comparisons between them and find out which ones they like best.
