PEOPLE—Mrs. A. E. Schmidt has moved to Los Angeles, but she doesn't stay away from ANAHEIM long. Earl (Dyna) Curtis, the man who knows the packing business, was quite an athlete in his day. The plucky ANAHEIMER who was reared in the Placentia district, played football for the Fullerton high school teams that steamrollered little ANAHEIM 25 years ago. Vic Loly is one of the many ANAHEIMERS who has served in the British army. Harrison Wills Watkins, the ANAHEIM accountant, is a graduate of the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. After graduating from the Limey West Point, he served in the Royal Garrison artillery. His son, H. W. Watkins, Jr., was with the U.S. forces in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded. Mrs. H. W. Watkins, Sr., served with the WACS during the last war. Mister served in the State Guard. Quite a military record for one ANAHEIM family, eh? Mrs. Ella Pellew of ANAHEIM takes her politics seriously.
PROFILES — Today's accolade goes to Howard Messamer, ANAHEIM high school shop instructor, who is doing an outstanding job as a teacher, councilor and friend of ANAHEIM's youth. Working with and winning the confidence of youth has made Howard Messamer...
PROFILES — Today's accolade goes to Howard Messamer, ANAHEIM high school shop instructor, who is doing an outstanding job as a teacher, councilor and friend of ANAHEIM's youth. Working with and winning the confidence of youth has made Howard Messamer one of the school system's outstanding instructors.
THEY SAY—The burglar who recently visited the Ray Reafsnyer residence performed a real service by opening two windows that couldn't be opened... Gilbert (Shorthy) Tull expects to be up and about before long. You can't keep a good ANAHEIMER down... Ask Bob Jaynes, the chain store manager, about some of those interesting places he has to go to to collect on bad checks... Foster Lamm has a story for any occasion—a story with a solid meaning... Jim Slobodian, a newcomer to ANAHEIM, was in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders—"the ladies from hell"—who have one of Canada's best battle records—kilts or no kilts... Ray Ortez, Sr., is no longer active promoting ANAHEIM baseball teams, but he has made a lasting impression on the men who played on his teams when they were ANAHEIM schoolboys...
AROUND TOWN—Pete Jacobs says housing projects are springing up around town like mushrooms... Jim Eakin isn't worried. He doesn't think there'll be a great demand for shipfitters in "t'next war."... Ray Davis is taking things easy since he retired from the oilfields... So is Capt John Steele, the honorary mayor of Buena Park, who is an authority of all of the latest political low down. Arky Vaughan, the former Fullerton baseball star, who broke into the game with Steve Luther's Cypress Merchants just after the crash of '29, is one of Capt's best friends... Incidentally, ANAHEIM's Johnny Wagner is the famous Nevada cattleman's brother-in-law... The stork visited the Todd Pool's in Fullerton... The Barnes Brodies have a new daughter... It's a baby girl at the Melvin Briscoes... Sam'l Lund & Sons handle a lot of glass without much loss. Some of the Lund-designed glass doors are a bit of aw right, y'know...

Pioneer Anaheim Woman Banker Plans Retirement in Berkeley
Mrs. Olga Beebe, who began a banking career in Anaheim and eventually became one of the state's best known woman bank officials, announced plans to retire this week.
One of the first business women in the state, a real estate and insurance broker and executor of one of the largest estates ever probated in Northern California, Mrs. Beebe has spent nearly 50 years in the business world.
Now a resident of Berkeley, she began her career as a bookkeeper in an Anaheim bank many years ago, receiving the handsome budget. The 1949-50 budget voted by the legislature totaled $1,035,-000,000. Kuchel's figure of $581,-453,438 as the cost of government includes some, but far from all of the $800,000,000 set aside in special funds for local assistance and state building.
At the end of the fiscal year, the state had nearly $300,000,000 in reserves. The money included $148,000,000 in the post-war employment reserve fund, $48,000,-000 in the post-war building fund and $75,000,000 in the "rainy day" fund.
The 1950 legislature voted appropriations that will just about deplete the reserves except for Governor Warren's "rainy day" fund designed to pay for emergency needs.
The increase in revenue reflected increase of the state sales tax from 2½ to 3 per cent and restoration of old rates on personal income taxes. These two sources showed gains of $27,000,-000 and $10,000,000, respectively.
Insurance taxes, interest on investments and other taxes pushed the gross increase up to $43,000,-000. However, decreases in the inheritance tax, alcohol beverage tax, horse racing revenue and other revenue brought the net down to $87,000,060.
Here are figures on leading revenue producers last year:
Retail and use taxes, $321,-560,399, up $27,000,000; personal income tax, $60,471,784, up $10,-000,000; bank-corporation franchise and corporation income tax, $74,546,381, down $750,000.
Alcohol beverage revenue, $16,-138,441, down $1,500,000; insurance companies tax, $23,285,219, up $2,700,000; inheritance tax, $18,651,683, down $1,800,000.
