Special Subtropic Fruit Display Set For County Fair
A special citrus and subtropical fruit display will be prepared and featured by the Agricultural Extension Service at the Orange County Fair next week, according to Farm Advisor, Harold E. Wahlberg. 35 different species and varieties of citrus fruit will be gathered from the extensive variety test plots established at the Citrus Experiment Station and entered as a non-competing educational display.
These fruits, said Wahlberg have been gathered from all parts of the subtropical world including China, Malaya, Japan, the Mediterranean countries, South Africa, Palestine, Brazil and other citrus producing areas.
The display tables will be located in the large agricultural and horticultural tent—in the northwest corner of the fair grounds. Each plate will have a card giving the name of the fruit and its place of origin.
Some of the fruit to be featured include several varieties of mandarins, shaddocks, pomelos, limes, kumquats, citrange, tangelos, tangerines, sweet and sour oranges, nucellar oranges and lemons, cit-sada, Shamonti of Palestine, Selecta of Argentine, Borneo lemons, rough lemon, sweet lemon, lomela and grapefruit.
Bicycle Riding, Paper-Throwing Contest Planned
Bicycle riders of Orange county are invited to test themselves for safe riding at the Orange County Fair grounds, at the exhibitor's gate at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 18.
Prizes will be awarded in the following events:
Line ride—Ride down a line four inches wide until you touch markers on the side. See who can go the farthest.
Circle ride—Ride into a small circle and be timed until you touch the edge of the circle or the ground.
Slow ride—Ride down lanes that are three feet apart. You are disqualified if you touch the lines or your feet touch the ground.
Newscarrlers representing all papers sold in Orange county are also invited to test their skill in throwing papers to a target. Teams of two boys must represent a paper with 10 throws being given each boy. All throws must be made from the moving bicycle. Recreation Department and Police Departments are requested to help in the promotion of this Safety Cycling Program.

terms. Only the great U. S. edge in the air kept the Korea venture from becoming a disaster.
Grateful as he is for Air Force support the American ground soldier wants his firepower on the ground too. He is the son of a mechanized civilization. He is rather resentful that his country wasn't geared to give him tools in quantity and quality to overwhelm "these Gook-suit hillbillies."
The GI has fought bravely and well saving American honor with his blood in a war he didn't start against a people who did. He also has the disadvantage of fighting in a land whose customs, terrain and language are totally unfamiliar to him—a soil on which the enemy is at home.
He feels himself a stranger in a war he doesn't know much about. And it broke so fast the American Army hasn't had time to indoctrinate fresh troops. It has only been able to give him what arms it could and send him into the line.
A bearded, dust-covered captain I met after the withdrawal behind the Naktong river line said:
"I still can't realize I'm here. If anyone had told me 60 days ago that I would be fighting in Korea, I wouldn't have believed he was anything but crazy."
Another correspondent told me of hearing a doughboy in a front-line explain to his puzzled buddy:
"Sure I know why we are"
