A short time ago I described Santa Catalina Island as my favorite vacation spot. Since then, Anaheim homemakers have been joyally championing their favorite places.
Phyllis and Merton Landweer tell me that they have just returned from a week's camping trip in the General Grant Grove section of Kings Canyon National Park which adjoins Sequoia and their praises are loud and long. For scenery, fishing, and camping facilities, they feel it cannot be equalled.
The Landweers, whose family includes Larry, 12, Tommy, 10, Dick, nine, and little Ginny who is six, loaded their camping equipment in their station wagon and set out for Grants Grove a little over a week ago. They traveled a six lane highway nearly all the way and made the 250 mile trip in about six hours.
They camped out along Kings River which is renowned for superb trout fishing. There is no camping fee, merely the sum of one dollar to be paid for entrance to the park and this amount covers the whole car load.
At Lodgepole is a natural lake where the children had a fine time swimming. The entire family experienced a totally unexpected swim when they fell into the river while trying to cross it. Everything was dampened but their spirits!
Grants Grove offers a variety of facilities. There are a community doctor and nurse, an outdoor church where services are held on Sunday. Landweers felt that the church service took on a deeper meaning somehow as they sat on logs among the giant redwoods in the open air to listen.
There are pack horses for hire, horseshoe pitching, ping pong, community sings and square dance rates were reasonable. Bedding, dishes and wood were furnished and cooking was done out of doors on a wood stove. Hot cakes for breakfast are a must at Grants Grove. Phyllis took along a big jar of strawberry jam that she made this year and the kids will never forget how good it tasted on a stack of cakes hot off the griddle.
All sorts of animals are plentiful in this area—bear, squirrels, chipmunks and deer. Merton says their biggest thrill came when they hiked to above the timberline and were able to get quite close to several California mule deer with magnificent spreads of antlers.
I contributed one of my choice recipes to Sunset Magazine and it appears in the current August issue. Since it is my own recipe, I guess Sunset Magazine will not sue me for plagiarism if I list it here for those of you who might enjoy it.

IDEAL MATE
Seek Marriage Partner with Traits Which Fill Your Particular Needs
Dear Miss Dix: Do you believe that there is a certain mate created by Nature for every person, or do you believe that it is up to us to select our own mates?
T.A.S.
ANSWER: I am sentiment enough to believe that there is a certain mate for each of us somewhere in the wide, wide world, someone who is our counterpart, who would satisfy our every need of soul and mind and body. But I am also certain that our chances of finding our affinity are so remarkable as to be negligible.
The happy marriages are those of the lucky people who have found their mates. The unhappy marriages are those in which the husband and wife are mismatched. The whole problem of the success or failure of a marriage is bound up in getting the husband or wife who is the right one for the life divider.
Intrinsic Worth Unimportant
The intrinsic worth of the person has very little, if anything, do with it. Every day we see free, discontented women married to men who are model husbands who are tender, kind, considerate and provide them with every comfort. And we see men who are ufaithful to wives who are beautiful, intelligent, amiable, domesticated near Lake Hughes and also Catalina Island.
