DOLLAR DAY FEATU Boys' DRESS OXFORD 4.00 DOLLAR DAY FEATU Men's & Boys' SWEM TRUNKS 1.00 PARK FREE IN REA OF OUR STORE ONTARIO, Calif. — Miss Doleen Bourgeois, 20, a former North Dakota school teacher, will reign as queen over Ontario's 1950 All-States picnic, expected to attract 100,000 picnickers from 48 states and Canada to a mile-long table on Aug. 12. The coronation of the beauty, a native of Pembina, N.D., will take place on the morning of the event at her home state's section of the "world's longest picnic table," set up under pepper trees on the lawn of Euclid avenue's central parkway. "Hi Neighbor!" is the permanent slogan of the event, where each year picnickers meet folks from "back home" at their native state's section of the picnic table. Coffee and 2,550 gallons of orange juice will be furnished at the 1950 picnic to badge holders. A giant parade of girl-bedecked floats will carry out the picnic's theme, "America the Beautiful," and special entertainment is being planned for each state section along the table. Edward Pollack, general chairman of the event, promised a good time to every family coming to the picnic and said a special invitation had been extended to the governor of North Dakota to attend and crown the queen. MIDSUMMER SKI-JUMP — Finn Karlson Norway Ski Club, takes off in the second annual Belknaptain Midsummer Ski Tournament of Winnipegaukee Ski Laconia, N.H. Seventy tons of crushed ice were sprayed Sick and aged persons and deformed infants are killed by the Siriono Indians of Bolivia. Anaheim's August Dollar Days, The head of the largest of the toothe one-third the animals Lignite is known as Nurserymen say... by Orange County Nurserymen's Association Chrysanthemums must have proper care during their growing season if they are to develop the best quality plants and flowers. Constant moisture is necessary throughout the growing and blooming period. The plants must not be stunted at any stage. When they are, they seldom make satisfactory plants or bloom. Overhead irrigation reduces the red spider population. It does not, as one might think, aggravate the mildew problem except possibly in districts when the plants cannot dry out fairly fast. Liquid manure or commercial fertilizers may be applied up until bloom time. They should not be applied after color shows in the buds. Mulching with straw or peat moss is helpful in maintaining uniform soil moisture near the surface and in keeping it cool. Manure that has not been well rotted should not be used for this purpose. The plants should be pinched back when about six inches tall and laterals should be kept pinched back until about the first of August. This should not be done so frequently as to produce an excessive number of branches. However, if the plants were set out early and have become tall and rangy, they may be cut back about half or two thirds in June or July. Such cutting back is best avoided, but should not be done too heavily or too late in the season as there would be too much soft growth at bloom time in the fall. Disbudding may commence about mid-August. In the large flowered types, the large first-formed bud may be kept; or it may be pinched off and two laterals chosen for flowers. Other buds should be pinched out when... DISBUDDING MAY COMMENCE ABOUT MID-AUGUST. IN THE LARGE FLOWERED TYPES, THE LARGE FIRST-Formed Bud May Be Kept, OR IT MAY BE PINCHED OFF AND TWO LATERALS CHosen For Flowers. OTHER BUDS SHOULD BE PINCHED OUT WHEN STILL VERY SMALL. CHRYSANTHEMUMS SHOULD BE SPRAYED REGULARLY WITH SOME INSOXICIDE, SUCH AS NICOTINE TO CONTROL APHIS AND THRIP. IF THERE ARE FEW APHIS, THE PYRETHRUM SPRAYS ARE BETTER FOR THRIP. SNAIL AND SLUG BAIT MUST BE KEPT AROUND THE PLANTS IF THESE PESTS ARE present. SULPHUR DUST OR A CALCIUM POLYSLUPE SPRAY IS GOOD FOR MILDEW AND RED SPider Mite, WHICH IS OFTEN PRESENT AS TINY PINPOINT INSECTS ON THE UNDERSIDES OF THE LEAVES.
