CHOOSING A MATE
Character, Health, Intelligence Congeniality Points to Consider
Dear Miss Dix: We are a young couple planning to be married and would like to know just what should be taken into consideration before and after marriage. How long should the engagement period be?
MISS
ANSWER: I think six months is the ideal length for an engagement because that gives a man and woman enough time in which to become acquainted and get each other's numbers, so to speak, without being long enough for them to get tired of each other and to wear off all the gift of romance on their gingerbread.
The things that should be taken into consideration before marriage are: First, the character of the individual you are marrying. Is he or she moral, upright, honest, trustworthy? Has he or she a strong sense of duty? What sort of disposition has he or she? Is he or she lazy, high-tempered, slovenly, selfish, hard to get along with?
Roosevelt, Korea Questions to Figure in Political Conventions
SACRAMENTO, (UP)—State conventions of California’s four political parties next weekend are drumming up speculation on two major points:
1. Whether the Korean crisis will figure in any resolutions for or against the Democratic administration’s foreign policy.
2. To what extent James Roosevelt will command Democratic party affairs in the next two years.
A total of 155 delegates are eligible to attend the state conventions of the Democratic, Republican, Independent Progressive and Prohibitionist parties.
Meeting simultaneously at the capitol Saturday, the party leaders will draft state platforms and name state central committee chairmen for the 1950-52 period. The new central committees will convene Sunday.
The Republican and Democratic conventions, at least, assume added importance this year in the fight of California’s new role as a political power.
On the basis of the 1950 census, California will have the second largest delegation in Congress and will be second only to New York
Restitution Frees Woman Held on Bad Check Charge
Mrs. Jean M. Hairston, held on charges of passing bad checks amounting to $102 in Anaheim last March, went free today following a preliminary hearing in the court of City Judge L. P. Bonnot which disclosed that full restitution had been made for all losses involved. As per previous indication, the District Attorney dropped the complaint against Mrs. Hairston upon notice of the recompense to bad check victims.
At the same time, it was reported that holds on the 28 year old Bakersfield housewife had been dropped by the cities of San Bruno and Sacramento and the county of Ventura in view of the fact that restitution was made in these places also. Mrs. Hairston was previously scheduled to appear on bad check charges in the three locations following disposition of her case in Anaheim.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Next, consider the health of the one you marry. If sickness comes to a husband or wife after marriage, their mates should do all in their power to comfort and cherish them, but it is folly to deny that an invalid wife or husband is a handicap in marriage.
Choose a husband or wife with the same social status as yourself and with about the same amount of education and intelligence. Husbands and wives look best to each other when they are on a level, not when one looks up and the other looks down on their mates.
But the most important thing of all to consider before marriage is the subject of congeniality. Find out whether you like the same things. Have you the same religion? Do you belong to the same political party? Do you order the same dishes when you go to a restaurant? Do you enjoy the same plays, the same music, the same books, the same people? Do you like the same games?
If you do, your marriage will be successful. If you differ on everything from politics to pie, you will fight from the altar to the grave. The whole of the law and the prophets of how to be happy though married consists in congeniality.
Leopold Steps Down; Strikers Back to Work
BRUSSELS, Belgium (IP)—The Socialist-controlled Belgian Trade Union Federation ordered all striking workers to return to their jobs today after King Leopold asked parliament to delegate his powers to his son, Prince Baudouin.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (UP)—The Socialist-controlled Belgian Trade Union Federation ordered all striking workers to return to their jobs today after King Leopold asked parliament to delegate his powers to his son, Prince Baudouin.
The king offered, in effect, a slow-motion abdication. With his powers transferred to the young prince, Leopold would remain king in name only. The prince would become king on his 21st birthday next year if the solution proposed by Leopold brought peace to the country.
Crowds outside socialist headquarters cheered a government announcement that decreed all persons arrested during the past few days for disorders will be released.
This eased the critical tension that has pervaded Belgium for weeks, but the area of Brussels around parliament and the ministries was put into a state of siege this afternoon, 12 hours after Leopold's announcement. Police from all over Brussels were concentrated there. They put up barbed wire fences and stationed armored cars between the royal palace and parliament.
Most of the city was quiet, however. A small number of strikers rode around in trucks decorated with the yellow and red emblem of the Walloons, Leopold's principal opponents.
COUNCIL MEETS TO DISCUSS BOND VOTE
Bond election methods and procedures are on tap tonight when City Councilmen hold a special meeting to discuss plans for conduction of the Magnolia Trunk Sewer Bond vote scheduled for September 18.
Out of the meeting are expected to come location of polling places in Anaheim and form and content of the ballot.
DOLL SHOW TOMORROW
Announcement of the impending doll show was reiterated today by the Recreation department. The place is the City park. The time is 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 2.
Ribbons and prizes are in store for winners in the various phases of competition. The contest is designed for children, but adults may submit collections for display purposes.

Ex Cincy Pitcher Faces Serious Charge in North
RED BLUFF, Calif. (UP)—One-time Cincinnati Red baseball pitcher Lee Grissom faces a manslaughter charge today after a man he allegedly hit in a bar died of a fractured skull.
Sheriff James N. Froome said the incident occurred Sunday night at a tavern in nearby Tehama. Warren Shermmer, 27, died of injuries which the sheriff said were received at the time.
Grissom, married and presently working as a rancher and truck driver, left the major leagues in 1942 to join the army.
He was with the Cincinnati Reds in the '30's and won 12 games with the Reds' second division team in 1937. He was selected on the National League's all star team that year.
In 1939, the Reds traded him to the New York Yankees. He subsequently played with both the Philadelphia Phillies and Brooklyn.
SIDESTEPS VIVISECTION
LOS ANGELES (UP) — Mayor Bowron sidestepped the city's hot vivisection issue yesterday by neither signing nor vetoing an ordinance which will temporarily permit medical experiments on pound animals.
The mayor did sign an identically worded ordinance, however, which will put the vivisection question up to the voters on November 7. The by-pass ordinance permits animal experimentation at least until the votes are counted. Both ordinances were adopted by the City Council.

'Careless Riding' Grounds Neves
DEL MAR, Calif., (AP)—Jockey Ralph Neves will spend the first three days of August on the ground.
The veteran rider drew that penalty from Del Mar track stewards yesterday for "careless riding" on Manyunk in last Saturday's Bing Crosby Handicap. Neves and Longden also were fined $20 for fighting after the race.
Insiders say Longden accused Neves of riding into his mount, Make-up Man. Make-up Man wound up last, Manyunk fourth in the $7500 race won by Imperium.
CUPID FOILS DRAFT
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Selective Service officials say that Dan Cupid is cutting the draft potential down by one-third.
Maj. Francis A. Hartwell, draft board boss here, said an analysis of 1-A registrations at a typical board shows that one-third of the draftables have popped up to claim deferment because of a change in status—mostly because the men have married.
In other words, that shrinks Los Angeles county's pool of 51,-000 potential 1-A men to 34,000. Major Hartwell said, however, he is confident the county's 48 draft
