Oaks Look Pennant-Bound With Fat Nine Game Lead By JIM HUBBART Associated Press Sports Writer Charley Dressen, manager of the Oakland Acorns, finds himself in the same happy circumstances today that confronted Walter Hagen during his golfing prime. Hagen would saunter up to the first tee, gaze down the fairway and remark casually: "Well, I wonder who's going to finish second." The Oaks hold a fat nine game lead in the Pacific Coast League today, and it appears that nothing short of a miracle will keep them from winning another pennant—the way Casey Stengel's nine old men did in 1948. Oakland dumped Seattle back into the second division Sunday by dopping both ends of a double header; 12 to 5 and 3 to 2. Second place Hollywood lost its seventh and eighth straight to Portland, 5-4 and 7-2. San Francisco moved into fourth place by clouting Sacramento, the collar club, 4-1 and 4-2. San Diego completed the day of double killings by knocking off Los Angeles, 11-7 and 5-4. In Seattle, the Acorns have won five out of nine games. Another game is slated tonight. Yesterday's game went into overtime. And Oakland won it in the eighth when Seattle's Guy Fletcher balked home the deciding tally. Timely punch and pitching kept Portland rolling over faltering. Mulloy Seeded Number One In Grass Court SOUTH ORANGE, N. J. (AP)—The Eastern grass court championship starting today may be the last chance for veteran Gardner Mulloy to prove he is not too old for Davis Cup tennis. The Coral Gables, Fla., star, now crowding 37, was given top seeding in the singles division—the same spot he enjoyed in the Southampton invitation tournament he lost yesterday to Earl Cochell of San Francisco, 9-7, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Prior to his disappointing showing on Long Island, Mulloy had to drop out of the Pennsylvania grass San Francisco moved into fourth place by clouting Sacramento, the collar club, 4-1 and 4-2. Timely punch and pitching kept Portland rolling over faltering Hollywood. Mickey Rocco's ninth inning homer decided the first one. In the afterpiece, Red Lynn checked the Stars with three hits, while his buddies collected 10. At San Francisco, the proceedings were equally pathetic. The then conquest gave the Seals a 7 test series verdict over the Solons. Lloyd Restell hit two for three in the first game, one for two in the second. His last one was out of the park. In the last four games, Restell came up 13 times, got 11 hits. Optimists Bow To Newport Anaheim Optimist horsehiders bowed to Newport yesterday in a 7-6 session that went 11 innings on the Beach city diamond. The locals got off to a slow start, then logged one in the fourth and four in the fifth to post a temporary 5-3 lead. The Newports rose up with singles in the sixth and seventh. Anaheim registered number six in the eighth inning. Then the hosts fired up the ball game with as counter in the ninth. Joe Bruce lead the local batters with a three for four mark. The Anaheimers outbatted the winners in 13-10 style. Banking on their fast break methods, the Dons held the edge throughout the entire match with the Whieldonmen. Bob Elliot lead the scorers with 15 points. Prior to his disappointing showing on Long Island, Mulloy had to drop out of the Pennsylvania grass court championships when he came down with stomach trouble. This bad break came close on the heels of his impressive victory at Spring Lake, N.J. two weeks ago. Mulloy not only is on the spot in the singles standings but he could also use a brace of convincing victories in doubles competition with partner Billy Talbert to insure selection as U.S. representatives in the Davis Cup challenge round at Forrest Hills, N.Y., Aug. 25-27. Last year, the Mulloy-Talbert duo lost to Australia's Dilly Sidwell and John Bromwich. In making his bid for Davis Cup singles recognition, Mulloy will have one less ace to contend with, since Budge Patty. Wimbledon champion from Los Angeles will compete only in the doubles. Patty withdraw from the singles at the last minute saying he had not had enough recent grass court practice. Y., (EP)—Ambidextrous Beverly Baker of Los Angeles had a long pull, but she finally beat 15-year-old Maureen Connolly of San Diego, 6-4,9-7, in the final round of the Maidstone club’s invitation women’s tennis tournament yesterday. The second seeded Miss Baker of Los Angeles, the eighth ranking player in the country, dropped the first two games of the first set, but then won three in a row. Miss Baker broke Miss Connolly’s service in the eighth game, lost her own in the ninth, but broke through again in the tenth for the set. In the second set, Miss Connolly down 2-5, pulled even. Then it followed service until the 16th game when Miss Baker broke Miss Connolly’s delivery for the match. Doris Hart and Shirley Fry won the doubles title with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Nancy Chaffee and Mrs. Richard Buck. Imperium Wins Crosby 'Cap DEL MAR, Calif. (EP)—The 1950 Bing Crosby handicap winner is Imperium. In one of the fastest of the five runnings of the $7500 handicap, Imperium covered the six furlongs Saturday in 1:09 4/5, returning $6.50 to win. Akimbo was second, Brave Fox third in the field of nine. A crowd of 13,752 wagered $773,707 on the eight-race card. First week figures showed attendance and wagering running less than five per cent behind the totals for inaugural week last year. BASEBALL Seven boys doubles teams, eight girls doubles teams and 13 mixed doubles teams got the current City Park tennis session off to a flying start last Saturday as they completed first round activities. Sure, the three bonus pitchers—Robin Roberts, Curt Simmons and Bob Miller—have come through handsomely. The trio owns 36 victories. Roberts won his 13th game yesterday as the Phil's swept a double header from the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-0 and 4-2. Every Philly has done his bit. But in the final analysis, it has been Ennis and his big bat who has put the Phil's in first place—and is keeping them up there. Batting Terror The 25-year-old native of Philadelphia has been the batting terror of the league in the Phil's current home stay. In the Phil's last eight games, of which, they've won seven, Ennis has clubbed enemy pitching for 13 hits in 30 times at bat. Except for driving in seven runs with a pair of home runs, a double and single, Ennis had a somewhat mild afternoon yesterday. His grand slam homer in the eighth inning of the opener just added dressing as Roberts coasted to his third successive shutout and his 13th victory of the season with a four-hitter. But Del's other four-base clout decided the second game. It came Legion Banquet Slated Tonight With final preparatory touches all done up, the Legion baseball banquet, which officially inaugurates the Fifth Annual Anaheim American Legion Junior Baseball Tournament, is ready to rattle and roll tonight, according to Anaheim Legion Commander Bud Johnson. Festivities commence at 7:15 at the Anaheim American Legion Hall. The banquet is a complete sell-out, Johnson said this morning. And small wonder. Featured speaker will be Beans Reardon, former National League umpire, whose fame as a caller is rivalled only by his fame as a baseball story-teller. In addition to Reardon, the 250 lucky ticket-holders at tonight's banquet will also see ON THE LAM ... with Jim Lamhofer All local ball fans would like to see 20-year-old Del Crandall of Fullerton play a bit oftener and regain the first-striking berth with the Boston Braves which he held last year and at the start of the season this year. But what is Manager Billy Southworth to do? The veteran walker Cooper has only: 1. Hit a healthy .300 through last Thursday; 2. Batted in 14 runs in less than half a season of play; 3. Clubbed 10 home runs. Cooper is apparently one of those odd characters in baseball who plays can only when he wants to, and just goes through the notions the rest of the time. After a long and successful career with the Carainais, Cooper saw his average and caliber of play shrink as a member of the Giants last year. When after rows with Manager Leo Durocher, Cooper was traded to the Cincinnati Reds, another second-division club, he was just another ballplayer who appeared to be deep in the twilight of his lengthy league career. His play with the Redlegs at the end of last year and the beginning of this one caused little favorable comment. Meanwhile, Crandall started out this year with two strides against him. He was the only catcher Except for driving in seven runs with a pair of home runs, a double and single, Ennis had a somewhat mild afternoon yesterday. His grand slam homer in the eighth inning of the opener just added dressing as Roberts coasted to his third successive shutout and his 13th victory of the season with a four-hitter. But Del's other four-base clout decided the second game. It came in the eighth inning to climax a four run rally that overcame a 2-0 lead Murray Dickson of the Pirates held over them. While the Phils were increasing their National League lead, the New York Yankees moved to within two percentage points of the American League's pace - setting Detroit Tigers. The Yankees swept both ends of a doubleheader from Chicago's White Sox, 15-7 and 4-8. Come From Behind The Tigers were forced to come from behind to outlast the Philadelphia Athletics, 12 - 10. They spotted the A's 7-2 lead, then came up with eight runs in the fifth. Vic Wertz banged his 20th homer for Detroit and George Kell drove in four runs with three hits. Nevertheless, they lost a half-game to the Yankees. Cleveland's third place Indians fell two games off the pace, splitting a doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox. The Indians won the opener, 6-3, but the Sox won the nightcap, 6-3. Washington swept a twin bill from the St. Louis Browns, 9-5 and 13-8. Home runs by Sam Mele and Irv Noren featured the Nats first game triumph. An eight-run uprising in the ninth won the nightcap. Three National League contenders, the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers all won. The Cards snapped New York's nine-game winning streak, whipping the Giants, 6-3. The Braves wrested third place from the Dodgers by three percentage points with a double win over Cincinnati, 4-2 and 10-0. Johnny Antonelli, $70,000 bonus youngster, posted his first victory of the season for the Braves with the five-hit shutout in the nightcap. Ninth Straight Brooklyn beat Bob Rush for the ninth straight time as Don Newcombe hurled a five hitter over the Cubs with a 7-2 win. Homers by Pee Wee Reese and Roy Campanella featured a five-run fifth inning uprising. The Card victory over the Legion Commander Bud Johnson. Festivities commence at 7:15 at the Anaheim American Legion Hall. The banquet is a complete sell-out, Johnson said this morning. In addition to Reardon, the 250 lucky ticket-holders at tonight's banquet will also see hear horshide luminaries Elby Fletcher and Bobby Sturgeon. Food for the affair has been donated by the merchants of Anaheim and Santa Ana. Preparation will be under the expert direction of head chef Orville Elliott. Arrangements are being handled by Mrs. Nadine Klapper and the Legion Auxiliary. One unhappy note was sounded today with the announcement that Pat Ahern, Tournament director, will probably not be present at tonight's banquet. Ahern, who worked out details of the banquet with Bud Johnson, is confined to a hospital bed at present.
