Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER TOPICAL TOPIX—Phil Schrott is going hunting, otherwise he would not have purchased Andy Sorsabal's favorite squirrel gun. Ralph Smedley, the former Santa Ana YMCA director, is well known in and about ANAHEIM. He's the founder of the Toastmasters clubs. Speaking of YMCA workers reminds one that Walt Taylor was actively engaged in the work both in Fullerton and ANAHEIM before he started selling the goods of the woods. Charlie Sellers, the plumber, believes in advertising slogans. "Let us keep your wife in hot water!" Eddie Portillo is the papa of a baby boy. Congratulations! Caroll "Red" Cone, one of the Chevrolet Cone Bros., just returned from a trip to the continent. Don West was one of ANAHEIM'S best when it came to tennis. Kendall Yorba, the zanjero, was quite a diamond star in his ball playing days. PROFILES—ANAHEIM is indeed fortunate to have such hard-working, public spirited men as Vard Hannum, Light, Power and Water Superintendent, who's always building toward a bigger and better city through wise, efficient planning. Foresight is better than hindsight. IT'S NEWS TO ME—Fullerton's Del Crandall is 1-A... Gordo Lamas may miss football practice. PROFILES—ANAHEIM is indeed fortunate to have such hard-working, public spirited men as Vard Hannum, Light, Power and Water Superintendent, who's always building toward a bigger and better city through wise, efficient planning. Foresight is better than hindsight. IT'S NEWS TO ME—Fullerton’s Del Crandall is 1-A... Gordo Lamas may miss football practice. He’s going to National Guard camp about the same time Red Saunders is starting grid practice at UCLA... It isn’t news to O. E. Hanson that this year’s ANAHEIM Hallowe’en festivities will be the best ever... Freed (Pop) Dukes is one of the most public spirited men in Buena Park... Sir stork visited Mr. and Mrs. John Denney here in ANAHEIM last week... AI Call is enthusiastic about this year’s Orange county fair, August 16 through 20... The Abyssinian logation recently advertised in a Swedish medical journal for a doctor to Halle Salassale. Wasn’t it Dr. Claude Steen, who with the help of a northern Orange county shoe man, presented one of the princesses with an arch support shoe?... Incidentally, the good doctor and Mrs. Steen, are radio experts—they “talk” to their son on short wave... W. B. Corbett, the college instructor, conducted a class in code for radio hams... A lot of QSL’s took it to get their tickets. REMEMBER — A really big man knows the value of humility. Schools to Get Better Orange Concentrate School children throughout the nation are going to get better orange juice concentrate this year than ever before. The orange juice concentrate required by the National School Lunch program for the 1950-51 school year is a brand new type product and will be much more palatable when re-constituted to single strength orange juice than previous orange concentrate products, according to Paul S. Armstrong, general manager of the California Fruit Growers Exchange. "Additional details on the 1950-51 School Lunch concentrate requirements have just been received from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington," Armstrong said today. "The orange juice concentrate to be manufactured this season will be re-constituted on the basis of 4 to 1. Thus one gallon of concentrate will make four gallons of single strength juice equivalent. Orange juice concentrate used in previous years by the School Lunch program was on a re-conversion of six to one and that product lacked flavor." Total School Lunch program concentrate requirements have not yet been announced by the Department of Agriculture but it is generally believed the amount will be similar to that purchased in 1947-48 when total sales of orange juice concentrate to the School Lunch program were more than 1,100,000 gallons on the conversion basis of six to one. Bids on the orange juice concentrate, which must be processed from this season's crop and cannot be out-of-storage stocks, must be received by the Department of Agriculture by July 31. Delivery must be made during the period August 28 to September 20. Current requirements cover the first half of the 1950-51 school year and it is expected another purchase will be made sometime after next January.
