For Results, Quick A Page 7 Anaheim Gazette, Monday, June 26, 1950 Dorothy Dix ITINERANT WIFE Woman Makes A Career Of Marrying For Meal Ticket DEAR MISS DIX: Almost a year ago I left my first husband after having been married to him for three years. I came to a little Western town to visit my sister. Here I met a man who fell for me at once and I married him, because I didn't want to live with relatives and I was too lazy to get out and get a job and make my own living. I knew I didn't love him but he thought I did, and still does, and he is crazy about me. I have only been married a few months and I am sick and tired of it. We live in a dingy little apartment. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, no amusements. If we could move to a larger town, it would not be so bad. If a better man should happen my way I would quit my husband in a minute, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush and I am not giving up one man until I have another in view. What shall I do? Shall I strike out for myself, for I tell myself that since this man fell so easily member of the Stanton Chamber of Commerce, is the owner of the California Cordage Co., Flower and Pacific ave., that had such a terrific loss, $20,000 in the fire that started in the cotton bales at the factory. Rogers says the cooperation of the fire companies, West Anaheim, Sun Garden Village, Midway City, all volunteer units, and the State Forestry truck from Orange was wonderful and although there was no available water to put the fire out, the fire was controlled and other property owners did not suffer. Today the Stanton Community church Bible school, which has been going on since last Monday, reached a high peak in attendance with 153 children present. A radio quiz, conducted on the comic side with funny faces for props used by Rev. Charles White was a great success at one morning session from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. This week the school study theme "God's Garden," which is colorfully carried out by the class leaders holding illustrated cards picturing the crop in the garden they represent, will be illustrated for three days with sound films. The school will close on Friday. Mrs. Mary E. McCloskey who recently established residence at 3718 Marlene, Bellflower, is formally announcing the engagement of her daughter, Mary Ann, to Samuel Herman. Sam is a resident of Hanson Manor at 7142 Thornton and tired of it. Shall I strike out for myself, for I tell myself that since this man fell so easily there must be plenty of others who would do the same, or shall I rot in this place, pretending to be in love with my husband? ELEANOR ANSWER: I really think that the kindest thing you could do to your husband would be to leave him at once, for you will do it sooner or later, anyway, as soon as some man comes along who can jingle a little more money before you or take you to some gayer place to live. HUSBAND TO BE PITIED It seems a pity for a fine, honest man like your husband to have to spend his life tolling for a wife who merely regards him as a meal ticket and who does not repay his labor and his sacrifices by even so much as a thought of gratitude or appreciation. Any man is lucky to be rid of that kind of wife, and the quicker she is on her way the better for him. But let me tell you, Eleanor, that "you will never find any happiness in marriage as long as you make it a racket," and regard a husband as merely a slave to work and support you in order that you may be fed and clothed and have nothing to do but amuse yourself. You get out of marriage just exactly what you put into it. If you put love and a sense of duty and a desire to make your husband happy and to make your marriage a success into it, you will get happiness and contentment out of it. But if you go into it just for the ease and money you can wring out of it, you will get nothing but disappointment and disillusion. For marriage is a sacrament. It isn't a graft. DEAR DOROTHY DIX: We have two friends who were married several years ago. The wife cares nothing for her husband. She cheapens herself in firtations and is unfaithful to him. The husband worships his wife and does not suspect her. He is the carried out by the class leaders holding illustrated cards picturing the crop in the garden they represent, will be illustrated for three days with sound films. The school will close on Friday. Mrs. Mary E. McCloskey who recently established residence at 3718 Marlone, Bellflower, is formally announcing the engagement of her daughter, Mary Ann, to Samuel Herman. Sam is a resident of Hanson Manor at 7142 Thornton ave., where he lives with his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Rene Ratte. Since coming out of the Marine Corps, where he was awarded several medals, including the purple heart, during his three years service, mostly in the South Pacific, Sam has been a student of architectural drafting, at the Long Beach junior college. When he graduates in September, Sam expects to go into business, followed by being married. Thought for a Day (Continued from Page 4) straining search for a subject; then the arduous writing; finally the shaking of knees and fluttering of heart as I read it. Note the subject, "The Uses of Adversity." It flowed from the verses of the immortal Shakespeare: "Sweet are the uses of adversity, "Which like a toad, ugly and venomous, "Wears, yet, a precious jewel in its head." Ye shades of the moral philosophers, what audacity! The fact of adversity has baffled thinkers through the ages. What could a 15 year old boy say about it? Yet now I can discern, as in many decisions of my boyhood, a power of destiny at work. "Pain," "penalty," "release"—That has been the major element of my study and message and work, through the "gospelling" years. The boy is the father of the man. At commencement, the other evening, the forum group discussing school policies, were seeking to evaluate college education. Should they continue in a higher institution? Not all should go perhaps. Half of our group went on. I have always been grateful for my seven years of training in a university and in the professional school. Whether this brings increased money earning power, seems to me not the most important possibility, Rather Its first value is in the understanding it DEAR DOROTHY DIX: We have two friends who were married several years ago. The wife cares nothing for her husband. She cheapens herself in flirtations and is unfaithful to him. The husband worships his wife and does not suspect her. He is the type of man who might really become desperate. What can be done about this mess? Shall we tell the husband? ANSWER: Never interfere between a man and his wife unless you want to get into trouble yourself. Telling the husband that his wife doesn't love him and has affairs with other men won't make her fond of him or true to him. It will serve no good purpose. Stanton Items (Continued from Page 3) of Commerce members and the public are cordially invited to attend. Lewis Conle who operates the service station at 10511 Stanton ave., has built his business up to the point where he needs assistance. This past week he has employed his brother-in-law Bob Mitchell, from Fullerton. Paul M. Rogers, charter mem- At commencement, the other evening, the forum group discussing school policies, were seeking to evaluate college education. Should they continue in a higher institution? Not all should go perhaps. Half of our group went on. I have always been grateful for my seven years of training in a university and in the professional school. Whether this brings increased money earning power, seems to me not the most important possibility, Rather its first value is in the understanding it gives of the course of history, the interpretation of nature, the capacities of personality. It may give a background of thought, joys of intellect, making one more at home in the universe. "He was born a man and died a grocer." We are more than money earners. "We are owners of the spheres, Of the seven stars and the solar year; Of Caesar's hand and Plato's brain; Of the Lord Christ's heart and Shakespeare's strain." The college helps us to realize that I hope, most of our young folks will go on. One of the greatest gifts to the community that this commencement makes, may have escaped you. It is the ACT of FAITH. In contrast to the frightened columnist, the radio ranters, the panicky statesman, these young folks believe in the future. That there is danger in the misuse of great natural powers, that we must cope with would-be-despots they well know. But they assume that the universe is moral and that it is their business to help right to prevail. To those who say, "With the world coming to an end, it is useless to prepare for the future," these young folks with steady tread, "greet the unseen with a cheer" and "march breast forward." Thank God for the schools and trained youth, and the valliant faith in God and man!
