Horace Heidt Seeks Talent A personal representative of the Horace Heidt review "Stars on Parade" will be in Newport Beach on June 22 and 23 to conduct auditions for performers to appear with the Heidt organization in a show scheduled for July 2. The auditions open to all performers over 14 years of age, either amateur or professional, will be conducted at the Corona Del Mar Grammar school auditorium at 7:30 p.m., June 22 and 23. No formal application is necessary. Group acts are limited to four persons. All those auditioning must bring their own music and accompanist. After the auditions have been completed three acts will be selected to appear with the show. They will compete for cash prizes, and at the same time have the opportunity to display their talent for Mr. Heidt, who, if he deems them worthy, may invite them to participate in a coast to coast broadcast representing Newport Beach. The show on July 2 will be under the sponsorship of the Zonta Club of Newport Harbor for the benefit of the Hoag Memorial hospital soon to be built in Newport Beach. It will be held in the Rendezvous ballroom. Fullerton JC Entrance Tests Required entrance tests for students who are planning to enter Fullerton JC Entrance Tests Required entrance tests for students who are planning to enter Fullerton junior college this fall will be given this evening, June 22, and again on Tuesday, August 15, Dr. H. Lynn Sheller, registrar, announced today. "These tests are not a condition of entrance," Mr. Sheller said, "but are used for advisement of students in planning their programs. Students who take these tests now will be at an advantage in registering for classes in September." Nation at Glance (Continued from Page One) The accident occurred about 15 minutes before midnight, when most of the patrons had already left. The crash of the ornamental plaster and wire lath reinforcing came suddenly with a roar like thunder and seemingly dropped in a single sheet, said Police Officer William Goldsmith, who was attending the show at the time. Another policeman, Phil Bray, said the collapse was "like an earthquake." A brief panic among patrons immediately died down. Redwood City Fire Chief Joseph Lodi said the ceiling seemed to have given away in the center and just "peeled off" to the sides. He estimated that about 10 tons of plaster and reinforcing fell. BALTIMORE—Brig. Gen. James P. S. Devereux (Ret.) broke a nine-year silence last night to blame the poor defense of Wake Island on military doctrine that put garbage trucks ahead of radar. The slight, wiry figure, who commanded the Marine detachment at Wake at the start of World War II, related the events of the Japanese onslaught publicly for the first time in an address before the Maryland Volunteer Air Force reserve. He is a candidate for the Republican nomination to Maryland's Second District seat in the House of Representatives. It is his first try at politics. NEW YORK—A rising Stock Market weathered light selling squalls in good style today. Gains of fractions to more than a point were liberally distributed. Steel and automobile issues were among the favorites. A good day's business was done, around 1,800,000 shares. The advance followed yesterday's rally which broke up a week-long decline, worst in the one-year career of the 1949-50 bull market. The market started with a rush. Gains running to two points were quickly established. The edge of the advance was quickly blunted, however, and gains were chopped down all along the line. In the afternoon demand revived and prices pushed ahead again. Youngstown Sheet jumped around two points in an initial response to news late Wednesday of a boosted dividend and a proposal to split the stock. The advance was later cut sharply. ALWAYS DRIVE CAREFULLY R. E. Pabst, El Toro marine, who resides in Laguna Beach, received undetermined injuries at 2 a.m. yesterday when his car went off Laguna Canyon rd., five miles north of Laguna Beach. His car took out a section of fence and overturned into a ditch. Pabst was removed to Camp Pendleton Marine hospital.
