FIVE PER CENT ERROR ALLOWABLE IN CENSUS
LOS ANGELES (AP)—A five percent margin of error is allowable in census taking, says A. H. Adams, chief of the County Regional Planning commission.
This, he said yesterday, accounts for the difference between population estimates made by the county and federal census takers. Latest county figures put the total at 4,307,934. The preliminary federal estimate is 4,116,901, which is 4.64 per cent less.
The commission estimates the population of Los Angeles city is 2,076,417. The preliminary federal count was 1,954,036, or 13.37 per cent less.

ALWAYS DRIVE CAREFULLY
To Hold Inquest Over Truckman Killed in Collision
With an inquest scheduled Friday afternoon over the body of George Melendrez, 25, Pico truck driver, burned to death in a crash between two trucks near Irvine early Monday, Larry W. Ritchie, 19, of Ramona, the other driver, will face preliminary hearing the same day on a charge of misdeameanor manslaughter.
(Coroner Earl R. Abbey has scheduled the Melendrez inquest for 2 p.m., to be followed at 3 p.m., by an inquest over the body of Clinton Thomas Lee, 31, of Santa Ana, who hanged himself in his county jail cell last Thursday after being jailed on a drunk charge.)
Ritchie was arraigned on the manslaughter charge in Santa Ana Justice Court Tuesday afternoon and pleaded "not guilty." His preliminary hearing will be Friday at 10 a.m. Complaint was filed by California Highway Patrol officers, following an investigation of the crash in which both trucks crashed against a tree and burned after a head-on collision.
