Publish Prize-Winning Essays in Chamber of Commerce Contest LLOYD DICK Fifth Prize Winner I would like to, first of all, thank you for the speaker you sent to us, he was very interesting and gave us many good pointers. Now, as for the opportunities and work, I would like to see more plants like the Kwikset Lock Company come to Anaheim. These sort of industries will give our young Anaheim citizen a good and well advanced job. You have asked, should it strive to become a retail center? Not because if everything we sell in Anaheim comes from Los Angeles, we get no credit for it, and therefore, we gain nothing. The part of just being a residential district is o.k., and then again if everyone has to work away from Anaheim they get nothing for the taxes that they pay. This is my idea of a future Anaheim and I hope that it prospers by it. Hal Boyle NEW YORK (LP)—Is the theory of the American melting pot wrong? Dr. Rachel Davis-Dubois, a South Jersey Quaker who has pioneered in developing techniques for intercultural relations, believes it erred in one respect. "The melting pot theory, as it was interpreted years ago," she said, "meant that people coming here could cut themselves off from their cultural past." "There was a pressure to think alike, do alike, and be alike. That ROSE CRUZ Sixth Prize Winner I like Anaheim the way it is now, but yet have Anaheim improve and expand a little, for instance schools should be made larger and improved. Roads should be made wider so the traffic that passes through can be more safe. There are, also, old houses that need improving; if they are too old to be improved by the people, fear them down, and have modern houses built in their places. Anaheim should not confine itself just to residential growth, but to expand a little more. What I mean by that is to have Anaheim grow in industry just to the extent to have more job opportunities, so the majority of the people will be able to work in their own home town instead of going to another town to work. These people that work in another city, usually spend more of their money over there than they do over here; and that is not very good for our town. To live in a small town like this, I feel, that this sort of town can really be called a home town, because a small town warms you up inside more than does the larger cities; also, people can be made to feel that they are more of a part of a small community like Anaheim. If Anaheim was to become another Los Angeles or another New York, you would have traffic jams waiting in line to cross the street, to enter a store, and to get on a bus or streetcar, and probably have more killers at large. There isn't much a killer or robber would want of Anaheim, a simple and free town, as our home town, Anaheim, California. LEGAL NOTICES (Fah. Anaheim Gazette June 12, 1950) IN THE SUBERior COURT OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA IN AN FOR THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES No. 304654 NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL ESTATE In the Matter of the Estate, FRANCES R. EXCEPTING: That portion of the Northwest Quarter (NW %) of the Northeast Quarter (NE %) of said Section Fifteen (15), Township Four (4) South Range Eleven (11) West, S.B.E. & M described follows: Beginning at a point on the Northernly line of said Section 15 distant West 825 feet from the Northeast (NE) corner of the Northwest Quarter (NW %) of said Section; thence South 825.72 feet to the true point of beginnings. Dr. Rachel Davis-Dubois, a South Jersey Quaker who has pioneered in developing techniques for intercultural relations, believes it erred in one respect. "The melting pot theory, as it was interpreted years ago," she said, "meant that people coming here could cut themselves off from their cultural pasts." "There was a pressure to think alike, do alike, and be alike. That would make our American culture thin indeed." And what troubled Mrs. Dubois most was that children of minority groups grew up secretly or openly ashamed of the ways and customs of their parents. This created tension at home and at school. The answer? Mrs. Dubois felt it lay in creating a feeling of pride in the child for his own cultural background, and a feeling of respect for the differing cultures of others. She got an opportunity to test her beliefs in action several years ago at P.S. 165, a public school in Upper West Manhattan attended by children of 48 different nationalities. It was a tension area, and the melting pot wasn't melting very well. After two children were killed near the school, the aroused Parent-Teachers Association asked Dr. Dubois for help. "I thought if I could just get the children to understand each other's background, the tension would be reduced," she said. But how to do it? Preaching tolerance to children doesn't work any better than preaching it to grownups. Dr. Dubois' solution was "the Parranda." "The Parranda in Puerto Rico," she explained, "is a kind of progressive party in which people go from one house to another." She worked out a program under which a dozen or more children of varying nationalities were released from school once a week from noon until 3 o'clock. During this time they had lunch If Anaheim was to become another Los Angeles or another New York, you would have traffic jams waiting in line to cross the street, to enter a store, and to get on a bus or streetcar, and probably have more killers at large. There isn't much a killer or robber would want of Anaheim, a simple and free town, as our home town, Anaheim, California. At the home of one parent and went on to dessert at the home of another. The first home might be Finnish or Puerto Rican. The second might be Irish or Jewish. In 'each home,' she said, "the children sample the food, sing songs, engage in games and dances and learn about the customs of their host. "A teacher goes along, but just as another participant. The kids think of it as a real party. No sermons against prejudice are made. They experience brotherhood—so there is no need for talking about it." After each Parranda the children report to their social study classes what they have learned. The Parrandas have proved so popular with both children and parents that Mrs. Dubois has undertaken a similar program at another tension area school. Here is what a few students have written about the Parrandas in their own school paper: "We may do things differently but we do them for the same reasons." "You thought at first you did not like them, but you found out differently after you met the people." "We are more alike than different." But Mrs. Dubois, a dark-eyed, graying woman of middle age, treasures most the tribute given her by a policeman stationed near the school. "I don't know what you ladies are doing," he said, "but since you've been coming up here I don't have so many fights to say." Dr. Dubois takes this as proof of her thesis that—"differentiate cultures enrich American life." Statistics show that more pregnant babies are born in Mine than in any other month. Pigs Is Pigs But No Room In Fullerton Permit for a hog ranch sought by John K. Norton was denied yesterday by the county supervisors when it was ascertained that the proposed site was only 700 ft. from the west city limits of Fullerton. Dr. Bower, county veterinarian, advised the board by letter that a county ordinance prohibits the establishment of hog ranches within a quarter of a mile of any incorporated city.
