Doors Open 6:15 Show Starts 6:30 Critics' Rave About Warbling or By Bob Funseh A couple of weeks ago New York Mirror columnist Nick Kenny wrote a paragraph about a cute thrush singing with the Ted Flo Rito arch. Now when Mr. Kenny speaks of someone without any prodding it means something. For the info of you natives who have never been further east than the Santa Ana River Mr. Kenny is not only a columnist of some repute but a song writer and poet to boot His column has enough reader interest that press agents are continually trying to get their client's birthday announcements in it two or three times a year. Which all tends to prove that when a young lady gets a plug—with no press agent—with no solicitation but just cause she sings sweet and Mr. Kenny happens to like it—well that means something. You are no doubt wondering why all the fuss about a warbler named Joy who sings with Ted Flo Rito and is mentioned in some Eastern typewriter jockey's column? Yesterday afternoon not only because I like to talk to attractive women but because I also like to write things about Anaheim I interviewed this fair lass in the comfortable confines of the family home on N. Palm. The story is as follows: First honors came to Joy at the sweet young age of six when she was named Queen of a Fullerton baby contest. At that time she was pursuing a dancing career with Burk's Dancing Dolls of the same hamlet and not without some success. For our little Joy (she didn't become ours until 1942 when the Wurgraft's moved to Anaheim) was signed by Hal Roach and appeared in several "Our Gang" comedies. Right about the same time she was singing the lead for the Christmas review at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. And this little prima donna wound up her childhood screen career by switching to the RKO lot where she assisted in dance direction. Her stage and screen exploits were carried one step further by her dad, Bob Wurgraft who used her picture to adorn his orange products. Thesented the boys with addonated by Hadley's Her stage and screen exploits were carried one step further by her dad, Bob Wurgraft who used her picture to adorn his orange products. Carried the stuff under the En-Joy-Able label. Just when we're going up fast like a meteor, Miss Joy cuts it all off by announcing that we have reached the point in her life known as "the awkward age." Comes next—lead in the Anaheim high school senior play when in a sort of prophetic role, she portrayed the part of Esie in "You Can't Take It With You"—the would-be star of the slightly dizzy family—and the prophecy is about the stardom not the family description! The year, incidentally was 1944. Our local belle transferred from the W. Center at, campus to that of the Pasadena Playhouse for a two-year stint. And when not occupied there, she sang with a variety of bands in and around Orange county. It was at Pasadena she made the break, for in 1948 Ted Flo Rito's manager saw her in a musical production and signed her to a contract. She stepped into a spot which formerly was occupied by Betty Grable and June Haver. The question of the hour?—Is Joy number three? Her press agent par excellence (Joy's daddy) in the meantime went into the candy business and started marketing Joy Lane candy. He reached his heights of promotion when he had Joy Lane Candy Kisses given away with each sale of Eddy Howard's recording of "Candy Kisses." Incidently this press agent business isn't Bob's vocation. He happens to be Sales Manager of the E. A. Silze Corporation of Anaheim, a citrus juice house. Among recent plaudits won by Joy is the title of Miss Flying CHEESECAKE—FAST AND PRESENT—Joy Lane Wurgaft, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wurgaft of $19 N. Palm st., points to "cheese cake" used by her father 16-years ago when she adorned orange boxes. Now as featured vocalist with the Ted Flo Rito orchestra, her picture adorns marguerite and billboards wherever the popular band plays. Saucer of 1950 at Galveston, Texas, "Splash Day," in May. Recent recordings on the Superb label are "Are You Kissing Someone Else" and "Tool-Toot-Tootsie Goodbye." Did you know her boss wrote the latter and also "Charlie My Boy?" I didn't always thought Al Joison wrote "Tootsie" and Eddie Cantor "Charlie." A television show with her and Ted Flo Rito in top billing is in the making. In the meantime she will accompany the band for an engagement at the Mark Hopkins in San Francisco. And next Saturday she'll be making a homecoming celebration when she appears with Ted at an Anaheim Elks Dance. The future: making the nightclub circuit in a single bill stint. Hopes: Role in a musical comedy. And here's what Mr. Kenny wrote about this fair last to wit: "We heard Ted Flo Rito's band playing from Texas, via the NBC Saturday night and were amazed at the work of Ted's new vocalist, a lass named Joy Lane. Where has she been? Has her voice been recorded? If no, one of the platter companies is missing a bet. If ever I heard a million-record voice it is this little lady's. She gives "If I'd Baked a Cake," "Music, Music, Music," and such songs a new refreshing quality that is delightful to the ear. We haven't heard anything like her in many years. She is distinctive, sparkling and a FIND." end of quote. With that million dollar plug we'd like to toss in our two-bits worth, to wilt again: If her voice matches her charm and personality, she isn't a find—nope, she doesn't have to be found—for she's already here! end of my quote, end of story. Democrats Sight Victory in State WASHINGTON (AP)—The Democratic National committee today interpreted the California primary results as indicating the election in November of Democrats James Roosevelt as governor and Helen Gahagan Douglas as senator. It predicted, too, that Democrats will win a majority of California's 23 seats in the House. The lineup now is 12 Republicans to 11 Democrats. The committee said in a statement that Roosevelt's primary vote is on a "steadily rising trend" and by fall his "vigorous campaigning and a rise in the vote voting in the primary placed the Democrats in California in the "best off year election position in history and makes it probable that Democrats will constitute a majority of the state delegation in the 82nd Congress." Overall, the committee said, the California results "give clear evidence of a serious purpose by the Democratic party of the state to insure an outpouring of voters in the fall. The position of all candidates, already good, will be improved in a ratio of 3-2 as the vote grows." WARREN VOTE 2,000,000 Governor Earl Warren's popular vote spared toward the two million mark today as returns limped in from California's primary election Tuesday and his Democratic rival, James Roosevelt had polled more than a million. Each had already won his party's nomination for governor. But under California's unique cross-filling procedure, the Republican incumbent was also on the Democratic ticket and the late FDE's son was on the Republican elite. U.S. Building Strong Force (Continued from Page 1) "We must rely on the tremendous power of our industrial potential, our reserve forces, our military educational system—in fact, what we term our mobilization base—ultimately to win a war if it is thrust upon us. That is a risk that we take." In the same series of hearings, Secretary of Defense Johnson said that nothing in the military assistance program and the European Recovery effort would permit Congress, in his judgement, to cut the proposed $13,000,000,000 budget "by one nickle." Johnson said national defenses are further ahead today than ever before in peacetime. "We are tailoring our defense to fit today's situation," he said. "We are getting into condition. We are converting fat into muscle." Johnson said the Air Force "is in the highest state of combat readiness since the war." Under questioning by Senator Knowland (R-Calif.), General Bradley said that if Russia goes to war the Soviets will move in the Far East as well as in Europe. Bradley added that since it became known last September that the Russians have "solved the atomic bomb," he has been more concerned than ever over defense of Alaska. He said any increases in military outlays ought to go first to the ground forces and Air Forces in Alaska and to the radar warning net projected for that area. Soong Bolts China Party (Continued from Page 1) found copies of a petition to General MacArthur demanding a quick total peace, withdrawal of occupation forces and the release of eight Japanese convicted of beating five American soldiers during a Memorial Day communist rally. Police embarked on a nationwide search for leaders responsible for distributing similar anti-occupation pamphlets. The Nippon Times forecast "a wave of arrests of agitators." Czechoslovakia — Thirteen Czeches charged with spying for Western powers were convicted of high treason and sentenced by a three-man state court in Prague. Four defendants, including a woman, were sentenced to death. Four got life imprisonment and five prison terms ranging from 15 to 28 years. United Nations—Secretary General Trygve Lie told a news conference he made it crystal-clear during his visit to the Kremlin that he doesn't agree with the Soviet practice of walking out of U.N. organizations in protest against the presence of Nationalist Chinese. He admitted his objections to these tactics had little effect in Moscow. A Chinese, Lee Yim, introduced commercial shrimp fishing in the Gulf of Mexico during the Civil War.
