WHY MANGANESE
HELPS PLANTS GROW
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — For some time it has been known that plants will not grow unless there is manganese in the soil they feed from. This was discovered by plant nutritionists P. K. Stumpf and C. C. Delwiche of the University of California College of Agriculture.
Now, working with graduate students W. D. Loomis and C. Michaelson, they have found out why manganese enables a plant to grow. They discovered a new enzyme in plants that enables them to utilize glutamic acid, one of the building units of protein. Without manganese, this enzyme doesn't work and the plant stops growing. No other metallic element is known to have this effect, and studies are continuing in the hope of increasing crop yields.
TRUMAN LOWERS BOOM
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Truman, retorting angrily to a critic of his new air secretary, says "all this howl about organizations a fellow belongs to gives me a pain in the neck."
The president added in a letter to Clyde A. Lewis, Commander-in-Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars:
"If you veterans would spend more time trying to find out the good points of a man in public office, instead of trying to tear him down, it would be much more help to the country."

BIG BILL, NO SERVICE
Mrs. C. R. McPherson, 7232 Ninth st., Buena Park, has a tax bill of $164.10 on her lot. But nothing else; no street lights, no street signs, no proper drainage and not enough police protection, she claims.
She wonders what she is getting for her $164.10; she complained in a letter to the county supervisors. Supervisor Ralph J. McFadden promised to investigate.
SALES UP IN COUNTY
SACRAMENTO (WNS)-A decrease in taxable sales for the fourth quarter of 1949 as compared 40 the previous year, was reported by the State Board of Equalization today. Sales dropped 4.33 per cent throughout the state, the board announced.

Law Has Busy Day Picking Up Stolen Autos
California Highway patrolmen, summoned to Corona del Mar at 2:30 a.m., yesterday to arrest two young Marines charged with theft of an automobile, bagged two more Marines on a similar charge before they got back from the haul.
Robert D. Knapp, 18, and Anthony J. Parnell, 17, Camp Pendleton, fell into the hands of the law when they fell out of a pickup truck which upset with them on the Coast Highway, a mile south of Corona del Mar. CHP Officers Leo DeLosRios and Toy Blakemore went to the scene and discovered the pickup had been reported stolen from the vicinity of a Rosemead robbery. So, the two Marines were brought to the county jail and were scheduled for questioning today by Los Angeles county sheriff's deputies.
On the way to jail with their prisoners, DeLosRios and Blakemore observed another damaged car on the highway and thought it answered the description of a stolen car reported on an earlier radio broadcast from Oceanside.
They queried San Diego county officers and were instructed to pick up the car, which was then traveling ahead of them along the highway.
