PROBE OPENS IN PLANE DISASTER
MIAMI, Fla., (AP)—A searching investigation began today into the crash of a C-46 plane in which 28 Puerto Ricans apparently lost their lives.
Representatives of the Civil Aeronautics Board and the Puerto Rican government flew to San Juan and Charleston, S. C. to open inquiries.
The destroyer USS Saufley steamed toward Charleston with 37 survivors.
Eight were known dead and scant hope was held for 20 others aboard the twin-engine plane that went down in the Atlantic 275 miles east northeast of Miami Monday night.
The 165-foot cutter Aurora, three Coast Guard planes and one Air Force craft continued to search the area for possible survivors. Officials said there was little hope of finding any more.
The pilot, co-pilot and steward were among those rescued from the plane which was en route from San Juan to Wilmington, N. C., with 62 Puerto Rican migrant workers aboard.

Attorney General Frederick N. Howser, a Republican, was kicked out by the voters on the basis of incomplete but indicative returns. Republicans picked Edward S. Shattuck, wartime colonel, under General Douglas MacArthur, to go into the finals. Democrats chose San Francisco's 44-year-old district attorney, Edmund G. (Pat) Brown.
The dapper Attorney General has long been a political storm center. His name appeared critically in State Crime commission reports. Governor Warren accused him of showing no desire to drive out racketeers. One of his agents was convicted in a slot machine payoff case. Another was shot while acting as a bodyguard for gang leader Mickey Cohen.
Shattuck, a solemn, low voiced Pasadena attorney, pushed far ahead with 88,451 Republican votes from 4,611 precincts. Brown showed strength by getting 66-

Optimists and Scouts Merge Boys Program
The signing of an agreement between the Anaheim Optimist club and the Anaheim Boys' Center, Intc., and the Northern Orange County Council of Boy Scouts of America was announced simultaneously today by Tom Yellis, Optimist president, Tex Middleton, president of the Boys' Center, and Lloyd H. Paxton of the Boy Scouts of America. The agreement provides for the combining of the boys work activity of the Optimist club with that of the Boy Scouts program and the development of facilities at 117 W. Chartress st., Anaheim.
"After a careful examination of all factors, said Mr. Yellis, "we have found that the program of the Boy Scouts of America appears to offer the greatest opportunity to effectively aid young boys in this locality. This is evidenced by the co-operation given the Scouts by the other service clubs and civic and fraternal organizations in and around Anaheim. We are glad to add our endeavors to those of our worthy contemporaries. This is in keeping with the policy of Optimist International and the many member clubs which have Scout programs."
"The Anaheim Boys' Center, Inc.," stated Tex Middleton, "was organized in 1940 to acquire land and erect a building to be used in boys' recreational activities. The members include William Webb as legal adviser, O. E. Hanson as treasurer, Dr. Lee C. Deming and Joe Sowder. Through the assistance of the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions' clubs, the American Legion, the Isaac Waltons; Elks, and from the public at large, sufficient funds were subscribed to acquire a half acre at the West Chartress address, and the present

Smith Over Weimer
In the fourth supervisorial district, Supervisor Willard Smith defeated formerly Mayor George Weimer of Orange by 205 votes, one count being 2589 to 2384, with one El Modena precinct missing.
The fifth district failed to organize in 1940 to acquire land and erect a building to be used in boys' recreational activities.
The members include William Webb as legal adviser, O. E. Hanson as treasurer, Dr. Lee C. Deming and Joe Sowder. Through the assistance of the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions' clubs, the American Legion, the Isaac Waltons, Elks, and from the public at large, sufficient funds were subscribed to acquire a half acre at the West Chartress address, and the present Boy Scout building was commenced in 1941.
"Upon the formation of the Northern Council of Boy Scouts," continued Mr. Middleton, "this building was made the headquarters for the northern section of Orange county, and has served as such since that time under the able leadership of L. H. Paxton. It is a great satisfaction to the directors of the Anaheim Boys' Center, Inc., to find the Optimist club is ready and willing to add their resources and endeavors in furthering the boys work through close co-operation with the Boy Scouts and the Anahelm Boys' Center, Inc. All concerned have confidence that the future holds great prospect for expansion of boys work for the youth of Anaheim."
The Northern Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts of America was organized April 1, 1944. Constant growth has been shown in the Scouting program during the past six years, and at the present time council membership consists of 42 units with 1899 boys and leaders. There are more than 400 adult leaders registered in the council, serving in varied capacities, and Francis Addy of Anaheim is the current president.
A Scout summer camp has been held in the last few years in the San Bernardino Mountains at Camp Rokilli, located on Barton Flats. The Council Camporee is held at Orange County Park, with as many as 250 Scouts participating. Many troups take treks into the mountains, and are constantly enjoying outdoor activities on week-end and over-night camping trips under the leadership of their Scout Masters.
"Scouting," stated L. H. Paxton, "offers a character building program under the boys' own leadership and is supplementary to the program of the home, church and school. Scouts learn to be self-reliant and trustworthy through activities designed for that purpose. The Scout organization commends the Optimist club for their

Senator Gurney Loses in S. D.
By The Associated Press
Sharing with California in national interest in yesterday's primaries was the defeat in South Dakota of Senator Chan Gurney, top Republican on the Senate Armed Services committee, by Rep. Francis Case, veteran of seven House terms.
Case, who campaigned on an economy-in-government platform, was the fourth Congressman to win nomination yesterday for other offices and the third for the U.S. Senate.
And Rep. John E. Miles, a former governor, turned back the bid of David Chavez, brother of Senator Dennis Chavez, for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in New Mexico.
Senator Gurney was the second incumbent to lose out so far in the 1950 primaries.
Senator Pepper (D-Fla) was defeated by Rep. George Smathers in a May 2 primary.
Friends of Case said it was not issues but hard work in "beating the bushes" that won for him against Gurney in South Dakota. Case's opponent in November will be John A. Engel, Avon attorney and a Truman supporter.
South Dakota Republicans nominated Attorney General Sigurd Anderson for governor. State legislator Joe Robbie, Jr., was unopposed for he Democratic nomination.
In winning the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, Rep. Miles turned back the bid of the Chavez brothers for control of the party in New Mexico. David Chavez resigned as federal judge in Puerto Rico to make the race. The Republican nominee, who was unopposed, is Edwin L. Meche, Las Cruces attorney.
Former Rep. John J.. Dempsey has apparently staged a comeback. He led the Democratic ticket in the Congressional contests, with Rep. Fernandez, in second place, for the two at-large nominations.
