Sugar Now Hankers After Official Middle Crown PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Sugar Ray Robinson, the master craftsman of the ring, has a one-forty eighth interest in the middleweight crown today after doing a workmanlike job on stocky Robert Villemain of France. But the lanky Sugar from New York's Harlem definitely would like the other 47 parts—even to the extent of giving up his welterweight title—before retiring in two years. Robinson won the Pennsylvania version of the 160-pound championship last night before a disappointing crowd of 22,004 which paid $119,007.49 to see the fight at Philadelphia's huge Municipal Stadium. He displayed a variety of blows that, while not able to knockout the squat Frenchman, caused Villemain to say in his dressing room: "He's a real champion. He hits harder than any man I ever met." "It's a wonderful thrill to win the world's middleweight championship, even if it's only for the state of Pennsylvania," said Robinson in his dressing room. Now I'd like to be champion of the entire world," he added. And to that end, Sugar Ray said he is ready to meet Jake LaMotta, recognized 160-pound king everywhere except in Pennsylvania, anytime and anywhere. Doby Paces AL With .395 Mark CHICAGO (AP)—Although skidding from .402 to .395 last week, Cleveland's Larry Doby held the American League batting lead with a 20 point bulge over the field. In games through Sunday, George Kell, Detroit third baseman who nosed out Ted Williams for the 1949 hitting crown, jumped from fifth to second with .375. Walt Dropo of Boston was on his heels with .374. Rounding out the leading 10 were Sam Mele, Washington, .370; Paul Ehner, Philadelphia, and Al Zarilla, Boston, each with .355; Phil Rizzuto, New York, .350; Walt Evers, Detroit, .344; Dom Dimaggio, Boston, .341 and Johnny Pesky, Boston, .338. In addition to placing three men among the batting leaders, Boston led or shared four specialized brackets. Dom Dimaggio had the most runs, 45, and was tied with Kell for most hits with 60; Vern Stephens had the most runs-batted-in, 49; and Williams was tops in homer production with 13. “It’s a wonderful thrill to win the world’s middleweight championship, even if it’s only for the state of Pennsylvania,” said Robinson in his dressing room. Now I’d like to be champion of the entire world,” he added. And to that end, Sugar Ray said he is ready to meet Jake LaMotta, recognized 160-pound king everywhere except in Pennsylvania, anytime and anywhere. Nab Horsehide Wins at City Park Zion Lutheran and Church of Christ racked up 10-7 and 3-2 victories last night at City Park as Church League ball went into its third week. Respective opponents were Calvary Baptist and St. Boniface. The Lutherans downed the Baptists in the evening's first game. They started off with two in the first and were never headed. The losers made three-run overtures in each of the final frames but couldn't quite muster up enough steam to go all the way. Lutheran Pitcher Floyd Trapp offered six-hit ball for the evening, three of which were garnered by the Baptists' Pastor Bob Kevorkian. Rostered as a second baseman, Kevorkian smashed a triple in the second inning and singles in the sixth and seventh. Highlight of the affair was the double play executed by the winners. Baptist Bill Koch hit a grounder to second while teammate Bruce Brown reposed on the initial sack. Keystone man Floyd Trapp grabbed the apple, tossed it to brother Lloyd who came over from short and outed Brown and fired it to Walt Schmit at first in time to nab Koch. Church of Christ came from behind to nip St. Boniface in the finale. The winners scored in the third, sixth and seventh. St. Boniface got two in the opening frame and drew goose eggs the rest of the time. Church of Christ's count-knotter came when Ev MacDonald bashed buddy Mills in from third. Mills had walked aboard and achieved third on two passed balls. Pitcher Lloyd Lichtenwalter won his own ball game in the seventh with a deep drive to center which scored Jerry Dickenson from the hot corner. Lichtenwalter also contributed his share of the hitting, adding a double and a single to the Church. CHURCH LEAGUE SCHEDULE Tuesday Bethel Baptist vs. Chavez Meets Aragon Tonight LOS ANGELES (AP) — Veteran lightweight Carlos Chavez of Los Angeles risks a record of never having been knocked out in 74 fights when he goes up against the walloping fists of young Art Aragan at the Olympic auditorium tonight. The match is slated for 10 rounds but Aragan will be shooting at Chavez' no-kayo record. Aragon, 23, has built up a reputation as a puncher and currently is the boss of Los Angeles lightweights. Chavez, at 28, is hardly the campaigner he was in the past but is still regarded as a dangerous, rugged boxer. The fight headlines the annual "fight for lives" charity show staged for the benefit of a tuberculosis sanitarium at nearby Duarte. Promoter Cal Eaton and Matchmaker Babe McCoy of the Olympic wanted the fight for a regular Olympic show but volunteered to stage it for the charity. FAMILY AFFAIR STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Lloyd P.
