Yesterday we got worked up to a father about some of the things in the California orange industry that didn't suit us. We got to talking about the cheaper fruit contract that will continue to plague the Exchange until a suitable explanation is given—if there is any.
We went on to infer that Minute Maid paid real money last year, right here in Anaheim, for frozen concentrate. We say that the contract with the Exchange this year has fishy angles. We are afraid that the whole scheme is to make the return to the grower show up in a bad light for the fruit that goes into frozen concentrate. There still are men, only in California, whose whole future is bound up in packaged fruit shipped East with the grower getting what is left.
But let's not get stalled. The only way to sell fruit is by the internal quality. That determines how it tastes. When you make frozen concentrate of can single strength the solids only count.
If an orange that looks good, sweet and rich then it has plenty of sorbate acids. The accepted price for soils with concentrate selling around the 25 cents a lb. makes it worth a Dollar.
thing.
Here is one of their statements: "In obtaining this better control the Exchange has followed firm policy of attaining the possible price for fruit regarding use."
In other words: Go home and raise the oranges and will sell em better, you don't know anything about it, you are growing.
That is how it sounds doesn't But there are a lot of returns for compared around here now and lot more are being set up to what goes on this year. Then facts will be brought out.
They better be good or some will have a red face. It won't a grower. This deal will not die out. And the 'best pos price' had better equal the POEST price received by the Flo grower.

IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO
By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL
SACRAMENTO (WNS) - citizen looking for an opportunity to pick up a little extra change in connection with the forthcoming primary elections should it easily done.
For Governor Earl Warren $10,000 to be paid in $100 reward persons responsible for the rest and conviction of anyone lating Division 14 of the election code.
And, for most decent lawing citizens it will be a surprise learn that a high percentage of voters of the state violate at one provision of that code.
That is section 11504 reads:
"Every person is guilty misdemeanor who makes or accepts any bet or wager (a) the result of any election the success of failure of any son or candidate; (c) the net of votes to be cast either in aggregate or for any party candidate; (d) the vote to be by any person."
And if one, having a peculiar fault, were to solicit upon the election and then throw those with whom he had the bet, he could theoretically lect the rewards with no proof ofsecution against him.
For section 11503 of the provisions, in part, "No prosecute afterwards he had such witness for any offense earning which he testified for prosecution."
While it is unlikely that jury would ever convict a man for an innocent election Bet is one way in which the wolf bettor might make his way perfect safety.
That is while he is en route returning from the polls on day.
This "escape" appears in language of Article 2, Section of the Constitution which reiterates treason, felony, or breach peace, be privileged from on the days of election, their attendance at such event going to and returning there."

R. Luedke, the jeweler, showed us a stone the other day which possesses quite a history. In 1849, Pope Plus IX presented to a favorite priest a ring. In the center of the ring was a large agate in which a head was carved, and on each side were five diamonds of rare beauty. The ring was purchased from the priest by Mr. Luedke, in 1852 for $850. The diamonds were put into rings and sold for fabulous prices, but the large agate Mr. Luedke retained and has just had it placed in a gold setting.

Accident Pictures ... Good Lesson
WARNING! WARNING!
Chicago (49) — The National safety council said today that some 200 persons have a very short time left to live. That many, it estimated, will be killed in Memorial Day weekend traffic.
The estimate is based on a four-day holiday period with very heavy traffic—nearly 30,000,000 automobiles on the move—throughout the nation. The estimate covers only victims who will experience accidents and dieing. They sort of scared the britches off some of our folks.
One of our Anaheim luminaries who didn't want his name published sent us the following note:
Those pictures were wonderful as far as alert newspaper reporting is concerned.
"But from another standpoint they point out the constant attention a motorist must pay to his automobile and to the other machines on the road."
In this dramatic (and slightly
Every person is guilty of a defraudor who makes offers accepts any bet or wager upon the result of any election; (b) success or failure of any per- or candidate; (c) the number votes to be cast either in the regate or for any particular candidate; (d) the vote to be cast any person."
And if one, having a peculiarly ill mind, were to solicit wagers on the election and then report it with whom he had made bets, he could theoretically collure the rewards with no danger prosecution against himself.
For section 11503 of the code provides, in part: "No prosecution afterwards be had against him witness for any offense conning which he testified for thesecution."
While it is unlikely that any would ever convict a citizen an innocent election bet there one way in which the would-be toot might make his wager in effect safety.
That is while he is en route or turning from the polls on election day.
This "escape" appears in the language of Article 2, Section 2, the Constitution which reads: "Electors shall in all cases, except treason, felony, or breach oface, be privileged from arrest the days of election, during their attendance at such elections, being to and returning therefrom."
WASHINGTON — Top-drawer Democrats were not happy when they got to Chicago and discovered the manner in which a quarter of a million dollars had been raised to welcome President Truman to Chicago.
First, a ruling was obtained from the Internal Revenue bureau that donations to the host committee were a charity gift and tax deductible. Chicago, it was argued, was playing host to the president regardless of politics.
Having secured this, local Democrats mailed a copy of the Internal Revenue ruling to prospective donors with an appeal for funds. And in the same letter, believe it or not, they inserted the schedule of Democratic political activities.
When George Killion, ex-treasurer of the Democratic National committee, arrived in Chicago, he showed the nonpolitical appeal for tax-deductible funds, with the Democratic events schedule to britches off some of our folks.
One of our Anaheim luminaries who didn't want his name published sent us the following note:
Those pictures were wonderful as far as alert newspaper reporting is concerned.
"But from another standpoint they point out the constant attention a motorist must pay to his automobile and to the other machines on the road.
In this dramatic (and slightly gruesome) manner you put before the people a real attention arrester that will hit home hard the truth that driving an automobile requires constant attention of the driver and real courtesy among all drivers.
'Let me tell you pictures of accidents scare me, and it has its affect on my driving. I drive carefully, and with those pictures in my mind'
Well, accidents and accident pictures are rough on the folks involved. But as they recuperate in the hospital, they can take some honest consolation in the fact that they have saved a few other people similar accidents, because as our friend above said:
"I drive carefully with those pictures in mind."

John Bush, Ed Kraemer and William Schumacher are off on a hunting trip in the San Bernardino mountains.
N. E. Steadman, Napoleon Hart and John Kuebler leave next week for a camping expedition to Kern County to be absent several weeks. The party expects to be five days taking the trip to the Tehachapi Mountains, where they will have their headquarters. During Mr. Headman's absence the office of the marshal will be held down by Veit Bentz.

Frank N. Gibbs returned Monday from a trip to Columbus, Ohio, where he was in attendance upon the general Presbytery of the Presbyterian church. While in the convention city Mr. Gibbs hob-nobbed for a short space of time with J. Bryan, and found him a very normal gentleman.
Building permits aggregating 1000 were issued Tuesday to William A. Bolan, for the erection of four frame houses in the Northshore tract, Nos. 816 to 828. Each permit was issued for a $1500 dwelling.
Members of the Catholic Study Club were entertained with "500" at Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. E. P. Fergus, Mrs. M. Durkee was guest of honor. Five tables were filled with guests and favors were won by Mrs. Alrickson, Mrs. Frank Snyder, Mrs. John Harlow and Miss Alice Teean.
Having secured this, local Democrat mailed a copy of the Internal Revenue ruling to prospective donors with an appeal for funds. And in the same letter, belleve it or not, they inserted the schedule of Democratic political activities.
When George Killion, ex-treasurer of the Democratic National committee, arrived in Chicago, he showed the nonpolitical appeal for tax-deductible funds, with the Democratic events schedule to Chairman Bill Boyle.
"That fool Nate Lichtblau," growled Killion.
"It's the first I knew about it," remarked the worried Boyle.
Later, he reported the whole matter to President Truman.
Note—The Chicago Daily News and ex-Congressman Everett Birksen, GOP candidate for the Senate, made the most of Democratic red faces and of the huge amounts of money contributed by the liquor interests to the Truman reception.
Rough-And-Tumble Veep
You can't beat Alben Barkley when it comes to rough-and-tumble debate or after dinner speeches.
The other day in Chicago, Barkley pulled a near-miracle. The occasion was the big Democratic rally honoring Thomas Jefferson just before President Truman arrived from the west. The dinner was poorly handled. The toastmaster forgot to introduce Postmaster General Donaldson and Secretary of the Navy Matthews. Jack Arvey staged a show of dancing girls from Chez Paris, while in contrast motherly Congresswoman Mary Norton of New Jersey droned out a 30-minute speech.
By this time it was nearly midnight, the honor-guest table was almost empty, and the audience was ready to go home. But Barkley was still to be heard from.
Most speakers would have been too discouraged to start. But the vice-president got to the point of what other speakers had ignored—the real story of Thomas Jefferson. He described the details penses," Senator Byrd uses his chairmanship of a similar committee in Congress to fire shots at the administration, but no such probe of padded payrolls in Byrd-controlled Virginia has ever been dared before . . . Another hot fight between right and left wings of the GOP is on in North Dakota. Frank Vogel, a campaign manager for "Old Bob" La Follette's presidential campaign in 1924, is running for governor . . . Professor Harold Urey, famed atomic scientist from the University of Chicago, is slated to be director of the new Science Foundation . . .
Landlords have been getting such bad publicity over high rents that the Norfolk, Va., real estate board appointed a 22-man committee to keep rents down. Instead of curbing rents, however, nine of the committee members themselves, boosted rents from 27 to 100 per cent. The nine men who were supposed to hold rents down but increased their own rents are: Ludwell Baldwin, Walter Bott, Clifton Cauncill, Ralph Drewery, M. Etheridge, Robert Kbolage, William Kutz, Lawrence Page and C. V. W. Trice.
"Driver of the Year"
Lloyd Reisner, 37-year-old truck driver of Indianapolis, was as cool and collected as you would expect the "Driver of the Year" to be when he was congratulated by President Truman for his highway safety feats.
Truman himself seemed to get a bigger thrill than the truck driver as Reisner told of saving a little girl's life on a highway near Louisville, Ky.
"Our highways are becoming safer every year," remarked Truman, "and we have men like you to thank for it."
Before departing, Reisner got a prized presidential autograph for a nine-year-old Indianapolis neighbor, John Truman Harmon—no relation to the president.
