Mariners' Score Rousing Hit with Alabama Jubilee Minstrels Friday
Alabama Jubilee Minstrels, presented Friday evening at the high school by the Mariners' Club of the Presbyterian Church, was the kind of show in which the cast has as much fun performing as the audience has watching. It was played before an appreciative full-house which enjoyed the whole thing from the opening strains of "Dixie" to the closing, "Alexander's Ragtime Band."
Black-face at Its Best
The authentic, old-time blackface show reached its greatest heights in the choral numbers which the cast of over fifty sang in a rousing and articulate style. These included: "Dixie," "Alabama Jubilee," "Waiting for the Robert E. Lee," "Rock-a My Soul" and "Alexander's Rag-Time Band."
Bob Larsen as Hoopie Sapollo interpreted with great feeling and ever-popular "Glory Road" and "Ole Man River" and keeping in the spirit of light minstrel doings offered "April Showers," "Dearie" and as an encore, "Desert Song." Equally professional was the rendition of "Aunt Hager's Blues" by Anna Lewerenz.
Comedy Numbers
Performing the comic numbers were Mose (Jim Morris) "Why Did I Teach My Girl to Drive?"; Lucius Hamfat (Dave Collins) "Lazy Bones" and Sassafrass (Ray Link) "Pussy Cat Song." This trio couldn't have been better—each ping couple, selected by audience applause, was presented a cake.
Goings-on of a marrying parson were convincingly portrayed by the Rev. Howard Congdon.
Mr "Al" Bino
Presiding over the evening's bill of fare was Mr. "Al" Bino (Glenn Kunz) who proved to be a top interlocutor and capable of getting the best out of his wise-cracking endmen: Dave Collins, Bill Talevich, Gene Peebles, Harwood Larson, Edgar Marks, Bill Sparks, Jim Morris and Ray Link.
The bright-costumed minstrel girls included: Margot Cartwright, Betty Wilmer, Vivan Link, Signe Hatfield, Emily Van Verst, Etola Sparks, Anna Lewerenz, Catherine Hess, Mildred Seapy, Wando Morris, Floralyn Groover, Miriam Krumanaker, Midge Simonton and Marion Collins.
Distinguished Chorus

Performing the comic numbers were Mose (Jim Morris) "Why Did I Teach My Girl to Drive?"; Lucius Hamfat (Dave Collins) "Lazy Bones" and Sassafrass (Ray Link) "Pussy Cat Song." This trio couldn't have been better—each exploited the humor of their particular numbers to the fullest.
The fast-stepping of Mister Banjo (Bob Burns) in both the first and second acts demonstrated the versatility of this dancer and his ability not only in tap-dancing but in general stage presence as well.
Instrumentalists*
Instrumental soloists—Sylvester Spareribs (Ray Hamilton) with his banjo medley and Alexander Bones (Bill Talevich) as the harmonica virtuoso were particularly effective in making this minstrel presentation better than good.
Bringing the audience into the show was accomplished in the Boomps-a-Daisy number when the Boompsigals, Patty Mattox, Joan Spencer, Phyllis Rogers, Genevieve Bradley, Etola Sparks and Gretchen Glover added a little spice by picking partners from "outfront" and then enacting the coat-switch routine.
The second act got off to a stirring start with an old-fashioned "Cakewalk" in which the best step
