Tigers' Win Over Bosox Snaps Fenway Park Jinx
By JACK HAND
Red Rolfe's Detroit Tigers ripped the sheets off the Fenway Park "Bogie Man." And they, did it without Hal Newhouser.
All Detroit pennant talk has been tempered with the big question: "Can they beat the Sox in Boston?" The answer, obviously is "yes."
They did it yesterday—twice. In the first game by a rollicking 13-4 score and later a 5-3 squeaker with the help of damaging errors by Ted Williams and Walt Dropo.
Failure to beat Boston cost the Tigers a shot at the 1949 pennant. In fact, they have won only 14 of 44 games with the Red Sox home and away in the last two seasons.
Fenway was the real Jinx. In their home park, the Sox smothered the Tigers nine games out of 11 in both 1948 and 1949. Detroit already has won as many games there as it did all last season.
One series, of course, doesn't decide a pennant in May, but Detroit's success in Boston sheds a warm glow on Tiger hopes.
SAINTS MEET S. D. HOOVER TOMORROW AFTERNOON
Santa Ana high school's baseball men, 1950 Sunset League champs, tangle with San Diego Hoover tomorrow afternoon in a CIF Central section dispute. Game starts at 2:30 p.m. at the Santa Ana home field.
500-Mile Racers In Trial Runs
INDIANAPOLIS (AF)—The Indianapolis Motor Speedway qualifying record, set by a supercharged eight-cylinder engine, may be knocked off tomorrow by a conventional four-cylinder racer.
About a dozen "fours" are ready to qualify for the 500-mile race May 30 and the fastest tomorrow will start in the pole position.
Trial runs will continue each Saturday and Sunday through May 28 to cut down the 66 entries to 33 starters.
The late Ralph Hepburn, killed practicing for the 1948 race, set the qualification record of 133.944 miles an hour in 1947. He drove a Winfield 8, one of the 550 horsepower Novi specials owned by Lou Welch of Novi, Mich.
The two Novis arrived late at the track this year after Welch held up his entry until the last minute in a demand for a bigger purse. Nalon and Chet Miller of Glendale, Calif., who replaced the late Rex Mays in the second Novi, have had the cars on the track but will not be ready to go Saturday.
The first Rose Bowl football game was in 1916.
JV Baseballers Hand Hornets 10-0 Drubbing
Coach Dick Glover's Color JV's produced their second shutout win of the week as the blanked a visiting Fullerton squad 10-0 on the Anaheim high school field yesterday.
The locals went four innings before they scored. In the fifth tie tallied a pair. The sixth frail looked more like a track meet; the Anaheimers poured eight runs across the platter. It went this: Goff doubled. Head reached first on an error. Roberts singled. Thorsen singled. Hovey whiffed.
Then the runs came. Lemus flirted. An error put Hatfield on. Returned to the plate and drew walk. Then Coen upped and blamed one over the left fielder's hit for a triple. Herbel walked it was forced at second on Hea grounder.
Yesterday's game was a replay of the previous match with Fullerton only more so. Then it was seven run last inning that produced a Colonist win.
Fullerton didn't go down yesteryear without a struggle. On a pile of occasions the visitors loaded bases. However the Colonists made with the Horatius at the bridge each time and wound up the dawn with a clean slate.

Colonists Bow To Santa Ana In 14-4 Tilt
Anaheim Varsity horsehiders gave way to Santa Ana's league champs yesterday in a 14-4 contest at La Palma Park. The victorious Saints touched four local hurlers for a total of 14 hits to notch their eighth straight win.
The Santa Anans scored in all but two innings yesterday afternoon. Frames two and three were the big ones for the visitors, each bringing a harvest of four counters.
The home town lads picked up one in the first, one in the second and two in the seventh. Anaheimers hit Saint pitcher Hayson nine times.
Colonist pitchers who tried to stem the Santa Ana tide were Weaver, Bruce, Ramella and Pugh. Ed Herrera backstopped the affair for the blue and gold.

Spikemen Head For Compton
Trackmen Larry Weaver, Larry Kirchman and Bill Walker carry Anaheim colors to Compton tomorrow to participate in the CIF Central Group championships. Coach Sam Keith anticipates that his three charges will meet the cream of the high school crop between here and Santa Barbara.
Weaver, on a basis of his efforts at Inglewood last week, will compete in the Varsity broad jump. Keith says his number one leaper has gone upwards of 26½ feet this year but can and may go farther tomorrow.

NEW YORK (AP)—The explorer Dick Wakefield case was shaken into Commissioner A Chandler's lap today, with career of the temperamental fielder in the balance.
The New York Yankees pended the 29-year-old flycatcher without pay yesterday shortly after they had been ordered to take back in the deal with the Chicago White Sox that didn't jell.
Wakefield, in Ann Arbor, Ms said he'd give George Weiss, eral manager of the Yankees hours to talk it over with me gentleman."
