‘Pilgrimage Play--Movie Version of the Life of Christ at High School Thursday
Filmed in full color, the movie version of the renowned Pilgrimage Play will be presented Thursday night, May 11. at the high school auditorium. Admission to the momentous event is free. The Anaheim showing is presented by churches of Anaheim. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m.
The Pilgrimage Play has thrilled Hollywood audiences for 29 years. During that time more than one million people have seen it.
The play was conceived by the late Christine Wethrill Stevenson and first presented in 1920 to combat the spiritual chaos which followed World War I.
The movie version, a full length film, is considered by many to be the finest picture to come out of Hollywood. Adhering to the principles of dramatic staging, it is presented with professional understanding which subdues the purely theatrical effects in the interest of bringing out the message, the spiritual import of the word.
And the play itself, forming the basis of such a movie, stands as one of the greatest religious dramas of all time.
Since the first production of the Pilgrimage Play on June 27, 1920, many stage greats have taken part in it. A few of them are William Faversham, Ian McLaren, Helen Jerome Eddy, Reginald Poole, Robert Vignola, Betty Blythe, Victor Jory and Herbert Grimwood.
Many notable dramatic artists now make up the present Pilgrim-age Play cast. Most of them appear in the movie.
Nelson Leigh, who has appeared as Christ more times than any other actor, is featured. Possession of a broad theatrical background Leigh toured with Ian McLaren Shakespeare group in 1935 and with the highly successful Maurice Evans group. He has appeared in four films of a religious nature.
Leigh's daughter, Pamela Chriet, also appears in the film version of the Pilgrimage Play.
Altogether, there are nine family groups taking part in the production. They include: Stephen Chasen his wife and three children; Leigh and his daughter; John Parris and his wife; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Evans; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Cate
