Big 3 Seek Greater Unity In Cold War
By DEWITT MACKENZIE AP Foreign Affairs Analyst
Dritish Foreign Minister Bevin and U.S. Secretary of State Achson are up against a particularly tough problem in their London discussion of ways and means for winning the cold war.
They are confronted with the pressing need of safeguarding the economic position of the democracies. While at the same time they must provide a military security which is sapping the economic life.
It is a vicious circle which has been produced by Soviet strategy. However, many close observers hold that Western Nations have been contributing (inadvertently but none the less contributing) to the success of this Russian scheme through lack of organization. While the communists are presenting ostensibly solid front, the Western Nations continue to find difficulties in cooperating. The paper thinks the reverses in conservative leanings) declare that "at no time since the war have western statesmen gathered in graver circumstances."
The Times says that far more has been heard recently about the doubts and differences that divide

The Times says that far more has been heard recently about the doubts and differences that divide the Western Powers than about the tremendous enterprises and common interests that unite them. The paper thinks the reverses in conservative leanings) declare that "at no time since the war have western statesmen gathered in graver circumstances."
Of course the question of how to increase European unity is one of the paramount questions being considered by Messrs. Achos and Bevin. And we impatient on lookers must recognize that it is far easier to state the problem than to solve it.
The economic interests of Western Europe are so complicated that in some instances they oppose one another. Moreover, Europe as a whole took a terrific beating in the World War and the money which must now be expended for military preparedness is needed for rehabilitation.
A concrete illustration of this complicated situation can be seen in Germany. It is agreed generally that the economic rehabilitation of Germany is vital to the recovery of Western Europe. But Britain is fearful of German competition in trade, and France is afraid of militarily strong Germany.
This gives a bird's eye glimpse of the Western situation, but it's only part of the story. We mustn't forget that this cold war is not two front war, and the Western Powers are up against an equally stiff and in many respects more complicated position in Asia where British, French and Dutch special interests are heavily involved.
Part of the past lack of unity among the Western Powers is put down by some observers to sell interest. It may be, too, that there was been in part due to the fact that some Western Powers have clung to the wishful thinking that after all, Russia would in due course abandon her cold war and play ball with the West.
Put that phase of hope seem to have come to an end. The West

CALIFORNIA LEADS IN FRUITS, VEGETABLES
DERKELLY(A)-Nearly one third of all cash received by American farmers for fresh fruits and vegetables goes to the California farmer, reports Sydney Hoos, University of California economist.
Almost 3,500,000 tons of free fruits, nuts, and vegetables are produced in the state yearly, but notes. About 12 per cent of California's total crop land, and about 20 per cent of its irrigated land is used for this purpose.

DEWITT MACKENZIE Foreign Affairs Analyst
SACRAMENTO (WNS)—California campaigning on the state level has been progressing on a remarkably high level, considering the stakes involved.
This has become even more apparent following the launching, over the week-end, of his official campaign by Governor Earl Warren.
Previously, Jimmy Roosevelt, the Democratic gubernatorial aspirant, had failed to come up with anything more in the line of name calling than some references to what he termed "the do-nothing record of the Republican governor."
Warren, officially taking up battle for the first time in this campaign, found it equally difficult to hurl brickbats and contended himself to some references to "one of the candidates" who he said "is promising everything under the sun—promising things which will cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars—and at the same time promising tax reductions." "Anyone," he said, "who does that is either a novice or a charlatan."
Welburn Mayock, whose name will be on the ballot as a candidate for governor, is the only aspirant to any office who has per-

less of this Russian scheme black of organization. While communists are presenting an easy solid front, the Western party continue to find difficulty cooperating.
Offer thinks the reverses in native leanings) declares that no time since the war Eastern statesmen gathered for circumstances."
Welburn Mayock, whose name will be on the ballot as a candidate for governor, is the only aspirant to any office who has permitted himself to get into the mire. Sending out reams of mimeographed verbiage, many of his statements have been too intemperate to ruse containing such references to Roosevelt and Warren as "political quacks." And such irresponsible charges as "a vote for Warren or Roosevelt is a vote to permit the thugs, bookies and bums to continue to flourish and prosper."
But aside from Mayock there has been no name calling engaged in by any of the candidates.
This applies to the races for both the U.S. senate and the lieutenant governorship, the two most hotly contested offices apart from the governorship.
Even in the attorney general-ship race there has been surprising restraint, in that campaign, as in the others, the main theme is "good government."
What is apparent in these campaigns is that the people of California are still enjoying comparatively good times and the candidates are all suffering for want to a burning campaign issue.
RADIO MADE FOR MINES
NEW YORK—(P)—Miners would carry radio transmitters to tell rescuers where they were trapped, in a radio set-up devised by James A. McNiven of New Orleans. He is an electrical engineer with the U. S. Coast Guard.
The miner would stick metal probes into the ceiling of the mine. He would speak into a radio transmitter, and the signals would be carried to a receiver at the surface. Batteries of the type supplying power for a miner's head lamp would be strong enough to allow him to broadcast, McNiven said.
The miner's transmitter-receiver could be a portable affair, perhaps carried on a man's back, he said. There might be one for each man, or one for each small group of men. Rescue work could be speeded up if trapped men could tell just where they were, and what the situation was. McNiven said the method had been tested successfully in coal mines.

BIGGER OLIVES
DAVIS, Calif., (AP)—The average olive in California probably will be bigger if the tariff on imported olive oil is cut 50 per cent, as expected. Imported oil would thus be better able to compete with domestic oil, which is usually pressed from olives considered too small for canning.
Size can be increased by thinning part of the growing crop on the trees, reports T. H. Hartmann, University of California pomologist. He says trees with light crops generally produce fairly large fruit, while those with heavy crops yield a high percentage of olives too small for canning.
